Corn Nitrogen Rate and Timing Field Trials with Will Neels
Agronomy graduate student Will Neels is assisting Javed Iqbal, agronomy and horticulture nutrient management and water quality specialist, with a nitrogen rate and timing trial in corn which focuses on efficient utilization of fertilizer nitrogen with right source, time and rate of fertilizer applications.

[00:00:09.850]and I am a masters student in Agronomy
[00:00:11.740]at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
[00:00:14.400]Today I'm at ENREC Agronomy Farms near Mead, Nebraska,
[00:00:18.040]where we have started a nitrogen rate
[00:00:20.318]and timing trial in corn.
[00:00:23.220]In this video I will be focusing
[00:00:25.330]on the environmental impact of nitrogen management.
[00:00:28.710]In this trial, we are focusing on the effect
[00:00:31.450]of nitrogen rate and timing on the effect
[00:00:34.450]of realtime nitrate leaching in salty loam soil.
[00:00:39.550]To estimate the effect of nitrogen rate and timing,
[00:00:43.430]and nitrate leaching, we have installed lysimeters
[00:00:46.910]at two depths of 60 centimeters
[00:00:49.560]and 120 centimeters in each of these plots.
[00:00:53.190]A total of 120 lysimeters were installed in total.
[00:00:57.821]We are collecting water samples
[00:01:00.120]from these lysimeters every week,
[00:01:02.570]and then analyzing them in the lab for nitrate content.
[00:01:06.970]In this study we are also comparing methods
[00:01:09.520]for measuring nitrate leaching in the soil profile.
[00:01:12.816]With the support of the USGS and the UNL water center,
[00:01:17.820]we have installed ion exchange resins
[00:01:20.560]at the depth of 60 centimeters
[00:01:22.347]and are trying to evaluate
[00:01:24.710]whether these can be an effective method
[00:01:27.320]for evaluating nitrate leaching in the soil profile.
[00:01:33.160]Our overall goal is to determine a nitrogen rate
[00:01:36.390]which optimizes crop yield potential
[00:01:40.024]and also reduces nitrogen loss
[00:01:42.450]and the impact on our groundwater resources
[00:01:44.660]here in Nebraska.
[00:01:46.060]Crop yield and nitrate leaching response
[00:01:48.300]to N-rate and timing would not only help
[00:01:51.312]in making decisions about the optimum end-rate,
[00:01:54.980]but also see the impact of the optimum end-rate
[00:01:58.220]and crop canopy sensing treatment
[00:02:00.470]on the nitrate leaching to our groundwater resource.
