- [00:00:02.010]Hello, my name is Julia DeLaRosa.
- [00:00:04.510]I work with new student enrollment
- [00:00:06.210]and I'll be sharing with you what to expect
- [00:00:07.990]for the structure of classes for fall 2020.
- [00:00:12.210]At a glance, classes will begin
- [00:00:14.090]on Monday, August 17th in an online fashion
- [00:00:17.320]and will conclude on Wednesday, November 25th,
- [00:00:19.810]which is the day before Thanksgiving, a major U.S. holiday.
- [00:00:23.460]Now this is a starting earlier and ending earlier
- [00:00:26.380]than it normally would be for a typical U.S. fall semester
- [00:00:30.690]at UNL, and the reason for this is to minimize travel
- [00:00:34.430]and to maximize safety guidelines
- [00:00:36.240]due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:00:38.820]So at a glance, classes beginning
- [00:00:41.160]on Monday, August 17th online.
- [00:00:43.460]Any in-person classes or classes
- [00:00:45.670]with an in-person on-campus component
- [00:00:47.560]will begin on Monday, August 24th,
- [00:00:50.570]and this semester we'll end on November 25th.
- [00:00:54.080]What this means in more detail.
- [00:00:56.670]On August 17th, all classes will begin
- [00:00:58.740]in an online asynchronous format.
- [00:01:01.520]They'll be available using the Canvas site
- [00:01:03.270]that you should be viewing at this moment.
- [00:01:05.280]You should plan to log into each of your courses daily
- [00:01:08.240]to check for any updates, assignments, lectures, et cetera.
- [00:01:13.105]Now, the style of classes during this week
- [00:01:15.560]will be asynchronous learning.
- [00:01:17.150]What this means is that classes will not be held live,
- [00:01:19.760]even if they do have a scheduled time
- [00:01:21.700]for in-person on the week following.
- [00:01:24.120]Instead, during this week, courses will have materials
- [00:01:27.270]that are available on demand for you to complete.
- [00:01:29.940]You may have readings, assignments,
- [00:01:32.120]and other materials to complete during this week.
- [00:01:34.430]So once again, you must plan
- [00:01:35.980]to log into each of your courses daily and be working.
- [00:01:40.760]Starting on Monday, August 24th, classes will begin
- [00:01:44.260]in an in-person live fashion if they are not fully online.
- [00:01:50.640]Many classes, even if they do have a scheduled component,
- [00:01:53.670]may also have online components.
- [00:01:56.010]Some courses will be fully in-person,
- [00:01:58.040]some will be fully online, and others will be hybrid.
- [00:02:01.030]And what that looks like will depend
- [00:02:03.090]on the class and on the instructor.
- [00:02:06.090]How do you know if this is the case?
- [00:02:07.750]If you go into your MyRED, select enrollment,
- [00:02:10.770]and click view schedule,
- [00:02:12.410]you'll be able to note where the location of the course is.
- [00:02:15.390]If a class is fully online,
- [00:02:16.830]it will be noted as online or distance delivery.
- [00:02:21.350]When you view this,
- [00:02:22.183]you'll be able to click directly to the link
- [00:02:24.350]on the on-campus map, where the course will be held
- [00:02:27.280]if there is a scheduled in-person component.
- [00:02:31.530]Now, if you're an option 2 student,
- [00:02:33.390]meaning that you're arriving on campus between August 24th
- [00:02:36.500]and September 20 later into the fall semester,
- [00:02:39.720]what you're going to do is contact your instructors
- [00:02:43.370]to let them know your travel plans
- [00:02:45.130]and your arrival plans and request accommodations.
- [00:02:48.370]This is for any classes that are not fully online.
- [00:02:51.050]Explain that you are an international student arriving later
- [00:02:53.530]in the semester and that you would like
- [00:02:55.190]to request accommodations to ask how
- [00:02:57.340]to complete the first part of the semester online.
- [00:03:01.210]How to do this is to use the messaging function in Canvas
- [00:03:04.550]by clicking on the inbox link on the navigation bar
- [00:03:07.520]on the left-hand side of the Canvas
- [00:03:10.430]and select the appropriate class and instructor.
- [00:03:13.050]I'll show you briefly how to do this.
- [00:03:28.040]You may also contact your instructors
- [00:03:30.090]by consulting your course syllabus
- [00:03:31.995]and emailing your instructor directly
- [00:03:34.980]using their email address.
- [00:03:38.310]Now keep in mind that each course
- [00:03:40.210]may be a little bit different
- [00:03:41.610]as to what the social distancing requirements
- [00:03:44.180]will look like within the classroom for an in-person format.
- [00:03:48.750]Some classes, for example,
- [00:03:50.020]may have you attend in person for some days of the week
- [00:03:53.140]and other days you may attend in an online format
- [00:03:56.530]at the live scheduled time,
- [00:03:57.960]and others may be a little bit adjusted from this.
- [00:04:01.330]Of course, within, on our campus in person,
- [00:04:03.630]we will be wearing masks at all times
- [00:04:05.640]and maintaining six foot distance whenever possible.
- [00:04:09.920]Your instructors will be providing you
- [00:04:11.500]with details about your courses structures
- [00:04:13.480]and what that looks like from class to class.
- [00:04:15.740]So really the best thing that you can do
- [00:04:17.900]at this point in the process
- [00:04:19.210]is to each day, closely monitor your Huskers email account
- [00:04:22.470]for all official messages from the university
- [00:04:24.990]and from your instructors
- [00:04:26.260]and that you regularly check your courses in Canvas.
- [00:04:29.660]One helpful function within Canvas that might help you
- [00:04:32.910]is to go to the dashboard of each course
- [00:04:37.300]and to check for any announcements.
- [00:04:40.690]I hope this was helpful.
- [00:04:42.250]Best of luck in your transition to your classes this fall
- [00:04:44.880]and reach out to nsc@unl.edu if you have any questions.
