- [00:00:01.470]Hi everybody, my name is Vivian Nguyen.
- [00:00:03.720]I am a psychology major
- [00:00:05.120]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:07.590]My project was advised by Dr. Jenna Finch
- [00:00:10.150]and for my McNair project,
- [00:00:11.770]we'll be looking at the "Association between Job Loss,
- [00:00:14.227]"Parental Mental Health and Parenting Behavior
- [00:00:16.807]"during the COVID-19 Pandemic."
- [00:00:21.200]First, we'll be going over the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:00:24.240]And then my purpose is my hypothesis,
- [00:00:26.540]methods and measurements
- [00:00:27.930]and then we're go into results, discussions
- [00:00:30.440]and then future research.
- [00:00:33.250]Looking at the COVID-19 pandemic,
- [00:00:35.010]it has brought a significant amount of stress to parents
- [00:00:37.420]around the United States,
- [00:00:38.750]which can have a dramatic effect on family.
- [00:00:41.440]COVID-19 cases continue
- [00:00:43.010]to increase rapidly in the United States.
- [00:00:46.600]There has been limited research done on the pandemic effect
- [00:00:49.390]of depression and anxiety because of pandemic is new
- [00:00:52.330]and is still currently going on.
- [00:00:55.316]Looking at my purpose,
- [00:00:57.600]the purpose of the study is to examine
- [00:00:59.330]whether parental underemployment is associated
- [00:01:02.030]with parental mental health
- [00:01:03.200]and consequently harsh and inconsistent discipline
- [00:01:05.700]towards young children.
- [00:01:07.880]Moving forward to my hypothesis,
- [00:01:09.610]my first hypothesis looks
- [00:01:11.400]at parents who experience job loss
- [00:01:14.060]during the pandemic will report higher levels
- [00:01:16.610]of depression and anxiety symptoms.
- [00:01:18.960]And then my second hypothesis states
- [00:01:20.910]that parents who experience higher levels of depression
- [00:01:23.867]and anxiety symptoms will report higher levels
- [00:01:26.330]of harsh and inconsistent discipline.
- [00:01:29.760]Moving on to background research,
- [00:01:32.550]past research indicates
- [00:01:33.930]that the great recession showed unemployment
- [00:01:36.470]was linked to a decline in mental health.
- [00:01:40.090]Past research also indicates
- [00:01:41.670]that when parents have a mental health condition,
- [00:01:44.550]the nature and the quality
- [00:01:45.620]of parenting are often disrupted.
- [00:01:48.720]And the lastly, past research has stated
- [00:01:50.980]that parents experiencing mental health distress
- [00:01:53.620]tend to become more punitive,
- [00:01:55.890]harsh, distanced and less nurturing with their children.
- [00:02:00.670]Moving forward to materials and methods.
- [00:02:03.050]Looking at our participants, we recruited 250 parents,
- [00:02:07.810]95.88% of them being females or mothers.
- [00:02:11.690]And then we also recruited participants
- [00:02:13.900]from the Lincoln-Nebraska areas
- [00:02:15.890]and in the surrounding area.
- [00:02:18.180]Moving forward to my independent variable.
- [00:02:21.290]My independent variable was employment change.
- [00:02:24.060]We used the parental report of job loss and under employment
- [00:02:27.360]to measure employment change.
- [00:02:29.550]And then for my dependent variable,
- [00:02:31.370]we looked at parental mental health, depression and anxiety.
- [00:02:34.920]To measure depression,
- [00:02:35.950]we looked at the CES-D scale and then to measure anxiety,
- [00:02:39.410]we looked at the PROMIS emotional distress,
- [00:02:41.590]and anxiety short form.
- [00:02:43.920]And then to measure parenting quality,
- [00:02:45.890]we looked at the scale of parent practice interviews.
- [00:02:49.350]And then for our control variables,
- [00:02:50.750]we looked at parent, gender and race.
- [00:02:54.520]Moving forward to our descriptive stats,
- [00:02:56.980]you can see that depression,
- [00:03:03.870]parents who suffered a consequence
- [00:03:05.960]of employment change due to COVID
- [00:03:08.400]were associated with a greater depression symptoms.
- [00:03:11.820]And then looking at anxiety,
- [00:03:14.050]the results confirms that employment change
- [00:03:16.360]was not significantly correlated with anxiety symptoms
- [00:03:20.650]and then moving on to parenting quality
- [00:03:23.870]of harsh and inconsistent discipline.
- [00:03:26.750]We looked at anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms,
- [00:03:29.500]and under employment.
- [00:03:32.260]There is no association between anxiety/depression
- [00:03:35.260]and harsh and inconsistent parenting.
- [00:03:38.440]So to discuss during COVID-19,
- [00:03:42.400]parents who reported under employment
- [00:03:44.072]reported higher rates of depressive symptoms
- [00:03:46.620]and anxiety symptoms on a trending level.
- [00:03:49.100]And then there's no association between parents
- [00:03:51.980]with mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety,
- [00:03:54.810]and parenting qualities.
- [00:03:57.350]And to conclude, COVID is not going away anytime soon,
- [00:04:00.790]the studies allows us to get a better understanding
- [00:04:03.110]of how this pandemic is potentially affecting parents
- [00:04:06.870]experiencing depression and anxiety,
- [00:04:08.760]along with their families.
- [00:04:11.460]And then for future research,
- [00:04:14.560]we'd like to include some more portions
- [00:04:16.150]of fathers and mothers.
- [00:04:17.390]As I stated before, 95.88% of the study was females.
- [00:04:23.660]And then lastly, we would like
- [00:04:24.760]to make this study more diverse
- [00:04:26.310]because on average, our participants were mainly white.
- [00:04:31.430]It was 93% white participants.
- [00:04:36.140]And then lastly,
- [00:04:36.973]I would like to acknowledge Dr. Jenna Finch
- [00:04:39.810]for being my UNL faculty member
- [00:04:42.450]and then my Graduate Student Mentor
- [00:04:44.470]and then lastly, the McNair Scholars Program.
- [00:04:48.030]Thank you.
