- [00:00:02.033]Hello, and thank you for taking
- [00:00:03.698]the time to watch my UCARE
- [00:00:05.048]research video. My name is
- [00:00:06.415]Shelby Warrick and I am a
- [00:00:07.713]landscape architecture student
- [00:00:09.331]at UNL and this summer, I did
- [00:00:11.364]research on Fort Kearny State Historical Park.
- [00:00:13.414]Currently, the State Historical Park is
- [00:00:16.248]undergoing master planning on the site
- [00:00:19.181]in order to welcome and engage visitors
- [00:00:21.015]in an authentic experience. This research
- [00:00:23.881]was completed with the goal of aiding in
- [00:00:25.699]that master planning process. The image
- [00:00:27.897]to the right is from a 2018 design charrette
- [00:00:31.364]where ideas were generated for this
- [00:00:34.113]design process. The objective of the research
- [00:00:38.163]on fort kearny state historical park is to
- [00:00:41.046]aid in the upcoming game and parks master
- [00:00:42.547]planning process by finding and disseminating
- [00:00:45.612]baseline historical data that could be
- [00:00:48.912]incorporated into a cultural landscape
- [00:00:49.845]inventory. Some background on
- [00:00:52.396]Fort Kearny is that the fort was
- [00:00:54.611]active from 1848 until 1871.
- [00:00:57.396]it was established by the
- [00:00:58.230]US Army to provide supplies and protection to
- [00:01:00.812]Oregon Trail travelers. Several westward trails
- [00:01:03.694]converged near the fort by the Platte River.
- [00:01:07.344]Many westward emmigrants traveled by
- [00:01:10.411]this fort and it became a hub for them.
- [00:01:13.461]Fort Kearny was additionally constructed
- [00:01:15.511]with the intention of gaining
- [00:01:16.977]possession of land that had presently
- [00:01:18.927]belonged to native peoples on the
- [00:01:21.027]great plains. Methods that I used for
- [00:01:24.144]this research included identifying, locating,
- [00:01:26.793]and reading primary sources, synthesizing
- [00:01:29.493]findings from the sources with the cultural
- [00:01:34.461]landscape inventory categories, and creating
- [00:01:36.993]a digital library and an annotated bibliography
- [00:01:40.043]based off the literature review method.
- [00:01:42.577]some examples of primary sources that I
- [00:01:45.642]used for this research included
- [00:01:47.228]aerial photographs, historic maps,
- [00:01:50.159]correspondence from people who
- [00:01:51.692]were either stationed at the fort, or traveling
- [00:01:54.008]through the fort,
- [00:01:55.525]archaeological records, and government documents.
- [00:01:59.969]Cultural Landscape Inventory is an inventory
- [00:02:02.192]from the National Parks Service and the
- [00:02:07.467]purpose of the CLI is to gather information
- [00:02:10.891]about the location and the cultural and
- [00:02:14.463]historical characteristics of a landscape
- [00:02:15.991]in order to know what we need to preserve on
- [00:02:18.924]the site. The categories that we looked at
- [00:02:22.840]this summer included plan graphics and
- [00:02:25.007]inventory, national register information,
- [00:02:27.407]chronology and physical history, and
- [00:02:29.873]bibliography. The annotated bibliography
- [00:02:34.190]is organized into CLI categories, including
- [00:02:37.606]the historical maps, photographs,
- [00:02:39.239]architectural drawings and surveys,
- [00:02:41.239]archaeological records, correspondence,
- [00:02:43.705]government documents, articles, essays,
- [00:02:46.856]and books, and finally databases.
- [00:02:48.905]Likewise, the digital library where I
- [00:02:50.872]compiled all these sources is organized
- [00:02:53.089]in the same way as the bibliography.
- [00:02:56.705]For results, the chronology and physical history
- [00:03:02.938]of the site, one of the primary sources that
- [00:03:05.463]I looked at included the restoration plan
- [00:03:07.855]that was done in 1948 on the site. from all
- [00:03:12.137]of these sources, I got a good idea of the
- [00:03:15.304]chronology of major events during the
- [00:03:18.971]fort period from 1848-1871. And the national
- [00:03:24.937]register document included a physical history
- [00:03:26.753]on the site from 1848 through the 1960s.
- [00:03:31.052]Some limitations for this research is that our
- [00:03:34.054]sources had limited information on
- [00:03:36.152]physical changes since the park period and
- [00:03:38.186]before the fort period, so some future research
- [00:03:42.503]would include locating documents pertaining
- [00:03:44.652]to other eras of the fort, such as pre fort,
- [00:03:46.952]homestead era, post park era, etc.
- [00:03:50.785]This image here to the right is from
- [00:03:53.068]a chronology done by University of Pennsylvania
- [00:03:56.268]and as you can see they've included eras
- [00:04:03.284]and events from long before
- [00:04:05.818]the site was created as what its main
- [00:04:10.101]historical period is, so we would like to do that for
- [00:04:13.068]the fort as well. For plan graphics and inventory,
- [00:04:17.120]an example of a primary source
- [00:04:20.199]was the grange documents, which were
- [00:04:21.600]archaeological records. One of the main
- [00:04:24.973]results for this research included a
- [00:04:26.766]site boundary being really well defined.
- [00:04:29.463]and some limitations were that the
- [00:04:31.983]archaeological survey was completed prior
- [00:04:34.166]to the park construction. For future
- [00:04:36.766]research we would like to consider
- [00:04:39.232]redoing the archaeological research for
- [00:04:41.714]after the park period, generating
- [00:04:44.482]a site survey, and also finding reconstruction
- [00:04:47.134]documents to gather more information on the
- [00:04:49.249]buildings that have been reconstructed since
- [00:04:52.115]the fort period. Finally, for results, we also
- [00:04:57.248]got some information for the national
- [00:04:59.148]register. Our primary source was the
- [00:05:01.969]national register document from the 1960s.
- [00:05:04.648]the main result that we found was that
- [00:05:07.281]the fort period was well defined and
- [00:05:09.503]some limitations include that the document
- [00:05:12.530]could be amended to include the
- [00:05:14.081]park planning and homestead eras
- [00:05:16.063]and there's limited information on other
- [00:05:17.475]narratives, such as the Platte River Valley
- [00:05:19.663]and Native Peoples living nearby.
- [00:05:22.129]Future research could include fort structures
- [00:05:26.562]could be eligible for the national register, as well
- [00:05:29.412]as researching more information to find
- [00:05:31.662]more narratives about the cultural and
- [00:05:34.612]historical integrity of fort kearny.
- [00:05:37.613]In conclusion, some future research
- [00:05:40.762]could include expanding knowledge of
- [00:05:42.929]geographic information, including history
- [00:05:46.348]on transportation and tourism in counnection to
- [00:05:49.161]the park planning period,
- [00:05:51.594]expanding the context of the fort's narrative
- [00:05:53.294]to include a more inclusive narrative for interpretation,
- [00:05:56.545]and landscape analysis of interpretation,
- [00:05:58.644]which would include making period plans.
- [00:06:01.244]Thank you so much for watching my
- [00:06:03.161]research video on fort kearny.
- [00:06:05.294]I really enjoyed this research and I
- [00:06:09.729]am excited to see how it may impact the
- [00:06:12.427]master planning process on Fort Kearny.
