- [00:00:28.170]Hi, I'm Terri James,
- [00:00:29.380]I'm an extension educator housed here
- [00:00:31.090]in the agronomy and horticulture department.
- [00:00:33.370]My two main focuses are the master gardener program,
- [00:00:35.990]and the Backyard Farmer Garden.
- [00:00:37.799]And here we are in the Backyard Farmer Garden
- [00:00:39.709]to show you around.
- [00:00:42.020]So this is the Backyard Farmer Garden
- [00:00:43.590]that we're standin' in right now.
- [00:00:45.020]And the Backyard Farmer Garden is 11 years old this year.
- [00:00:47.470]It started out as a 10 by 10 plot,
- [00:00:50.130]and we've really kind of grown it,
- [00:00:53.150]and we have lots of different ideas
- [00:00:55.740]that you could use within your own landscape,
- [00:00:58.950]at your either golf course or cityscapes,
- [00:01:03.400]or wherever you're at.
- [00:01:05.070]We have in-ground beds, we have raised beds,
- [00:01:08.290]we have containers.
- [00:01:09.860]And most of our beds in this area are mixed beds,
- [00:01:13.440]so we have both flowers, ornamental flowers,
- [00:01:16.240]and vegetables that are combined.
- [00:01:18.520]The vegetables are all picked and used
- [00:01:20.346]within the east campus area for donation gardens.
- [00:01:27.000]So this garden started as a 10 by 10 plot,
- [00:01:29.790]we really ask people,
- [00:01:31.510]or really recommend for people to start small
- [00:01:34.790]and work your way up.
- [00:01:36.920]We really looked at kind of how we wanted to organize this,
- [00:01:40.350]and we've organized this into different beds
- [00:01:42.970]with pathways through it.
- [00:01:45.260]Wherever you're at,
- [00:01:46.240]you would be able to do it,
- [00:01:47.370]maybe a pathway up to the entryway to your clubhouse,
- [00:01:51.080]or maybe some areas next to your tea boxes,
- [00:01:55.370]or a sidewalk.
- [00:01:57.000]But really we worked on landscape beds,
- [00:02:00.350]we amended them quite a bit.
- [00:02:03.027]There's a lot of work that goes into these annual beds.
- [00:02:08.870]But once they're established and you get everything planted,
- [00:02:12.280]it's pretty much just kind of light weeding
- [00:02:15.600]throughout the summer once you have a really good soil base.
- [00:02:19.300]We really look at trying to layer the landscape,
- [00:02:22.030]we look at trying to put some lower masses to the bottom,
- [00:02:27.500]and them some medium height plants,
- [00:02:30.377]some higher plants,
- [00:02:31.843]and then really, our claim to fame here
- [00:02:34.300]down in the Backyard Farmer Garden area,
- [00:02:37.000]is really the vegetables.
- [00:02:39.780]We really try to show off those vegetables and use that,
- [00:02:43.020]which would be a really great way to add to,
- [00:02:46.050]maybe if you have a cafe or something at your clubhouse or--
- [00:02:50.617]Then you can kinda help donate some of that produce too.
- [00:02:54.960]If you don't have area for some of these ground beds
- [00:02:58.080]like we have here,
- [00:02:59.000]you really have a lot of options
- [00:03:00.540]if you wanna go into a raised bed situation.
- [00:03:04.090]These are really easy to put onto concrete areas,
- [00:03:06.890]if you wanna kinda put it in the corner of a parking lot,
- [00:03:10.480]or some kind of paved area.
- [00:03:13.610]These are great for adding to that cafe,
- [00:03:17.480]if you really want to put some kind of produce in.
- [00:03:20.760]We have one that's specifically for herbs,
- [00:03:24.060]so if you wanted to kinda just add those culinary herbs
- [00:03:28.080]to your chef's ability,
- [00:03:30.520]then it's really easy to put these in.
- [00:03:33.380]You can also put in containers,
- [00:03:35.960]containers are a great way to block areas off
- [00:03:39.700]that are much more ornamental.
- [00:03:43.180]The bigger the container,
- [00:03:44.620]the more potting mix you're probably gonna have to use,
- [00:03:48.100]but they're really easy to take care of.
- [00:03:52.114]The bigger they are,
- [00:03:53.540]the less often you're gonna really have to water them,
- [00:03:55.800]even in the summertime if it gets hot.
- [00:03:58.140]A lot of ours are really only watered about twice a week.
- [00:04:02.410]But they really do add another dimension to your area,
- [00:04:06.000]they're great to be able, like I said,
- [00:04:08.070]to block an area off, create walls, create focal points.
- [00:04:12.780]So you can really do a lot
- [00:04:14.380]with either some raised beds or some containers.
- [00:04:19.010]And, in addition, if you have space like we do here,
- [00:04:22.480]you can add some shrubs.
- [00:04:24.560]These are very ornamental, they're pretty easy to care for,
- [00:04:28.710]and they will add some fruit.
- [00:04:31.080]So again, adding back into kind of,
- [00:04:33.430]some dual-purpose for your location.
- [00:04:38.110]Blackberries, raspberries,
- [00:04:40.480]you can get ones that do not have thorns,
- [00:04:42.760]so they're a little bit user-friendly and people-friendly.
- [00:04:48.440]You can even add some small fruit trees
- [00:04:51.040]if you're interested, there's apples, cherries, pears,
- [00:04:56.240]all those that you would be able to add
- [00:04:58.020]for some ornamental purpose and some culinary purpose
- [00:05:01.490]within your landscapes.
- [00:05:03.510]The newest addition to our Backyard Farmer Garden
- [00:05:05.790]is our rain chain.
- [00:05:07.020]This is something that you can add to your landscape,
- [00:05:08.920]especially if you need to kind of
- [00:05:10.070]direct water into a different way.
- [00:05:12.490]We actually have four rain gardens that are all attached,
- [00:05:17.180]and then we have our last,
- [00:05:18.770]what we call our wet meadows at the bottom,
- [00:05:21.800]which is much larger.
- [00:05:24.310]But we are able to direct water off of the street
- [00:05:28.330]into our gardens,
- [00:05:29.930]and they just kind of chain down into our wet meadow.
- [00:05:33.640]But we have lots of textures, again,
- [00:05:36.330]with the ground cover at the bottom,
- [00:05:38.190]and then the different heights working up.
- [00:05:40.560]Our rain garden is really designed specifically for campus,
- [00:05:45.440]and when students come back.
- [00:05:46.640]So really, a lot of fall color here,
- [00:05:49.800]but you can really make sure
- [00:05:50.970]that you look at a full season of different colors
- [00:05:55.410]that you would be able to incorporate into your garden.
- [00:05:59.114]If you're thinking about
- [00:05:59.947]installing a landscape into your area,
- [00:06:02.060]then there's kind of a few things
- [00:06:03.480]that you might wanna think about.
- [00:06:04.820]First you really need to do soil prep,
- [00:06:06.630]as all of you would know.
- [00:06:08.420]But the other thing is to think about kind of the season,
- [00:06:11.250]and kind of when you would be seeing
- [00:06:12.970]and viewing your landscapes.
- [00:06:14.700]The gardens that we have here,
- [00:06:16.210]we really do focus on making sure
- [00:06:18.110]that we have bloom and color all year long.
- [00:06:21.580]So we really have stuff that comes up in March and April,
- [00:06:25.310]for those early areas,
- [00:06:27.634]we have a whole line of red and white tulips
- [00:06:31.900]that come up every year that can stream down our rain chain.
- [00:06:36.100]And then we have stuff that kind of fades away from spring,
- [00:06:40.100]and then into summer, and then into fall.
- [00:06:42.620]We really do shine in the fall in this garden,
- [00:06:45.080]especially with our rain chain, really anchored for fall,
- [00:06:48.870]that's when students are coming back onto campus.
- [00:06:51.550]But if you have an event specific for your area,
- [00:06:54.530]then kind of plan on what's blooming at that time,
- [00:06:57.850]and then really choose those plants.
- [00:06:59.880]Make sure that you're choosing stuff
- [00:07:01.340]that's both low, medium, and high.
- [00:07:04.790]Make sure that you are looking
- [00:07:06.040]at lots of textures and colors.
- [00:07:08.410]And we really do love all of our pollinator plants,
- [00:07:10.907]so we really do try to get lots of pollinator plants
- [00:07:14.070]that are really happy within our garden.
- [00:07:16.859]I hope you enjoyed our tour of the Backyard Farmer Garden,
- [00:07:19.980]we gave you some ideas.
- [00:07:21.580]While this isn't exactly perfect,
- [00:07:24.136]it is the way we have to live today.
- [00:07:26.900]But, just so that you know,
- [00:07:28.800]our gardens are open all year long.
- [00:07:30.740]You are more than welcome
- [00:07:31.573]to come and visit our garden anytime.
- [00:07:34.210]If you do need some help,
- [00:07:35.610]we always have master gardener volunteers
- [00:07:37.650]here on Thursday mornings and Saturday mornings.
- [00:07:40.470]They are more than willing to help
- [00:07:41.890]and be able to answer any of your questions on the gardens.
- [00:07:45.010]But please come down and visit our garden,
- [00:07:46.924]be able to get some ideas,
- [00:07:49.210]and we'd be happy to help you out if you need anything.
- [00:07:51.620]So just let us know if you need any help.
- [00:07:53.610]Thanks for visiting.
