- [00:00:21.440]Hello everyone, I'm Matt Soshick,
- [00:00:22.760]and I'm the turf grass research manager
- [00:00:25.110]here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:27.330]Today I'm gonna be talking a little bit about
- [00:00:28.770]some yellow nutsedge control,
- [00:00:30.100]I'm standing on a very healthy
- [00:00:32.000]nutsedge crop that we have here,
- [00:00:34.130]thanks to Luchi Lee's previous work for his doctorate,
- [00:00:38.470]and he left us a nice area of nutsedge
- [00:00:40.070]that we're doing some research trials on,
- [00:00:42.460]with some new herbicides and some old herbicides,
- [00:00:44.620]trying to figure out the best way
- [00:00:46.250]to control yellow nutsedge.
- [00:00:47.600]We've been doing it for many years,
- [00:00:48.800]but there's always room for improvement,
- [00:00:51.000]so, what we did was we did a new trial
- [00:00:53.840]looking at a seating of tall fescue,
- [00:00:56.530]and trying to control yellow nutsedge in that seeding.
- [00:01:00.710]So what we did was, we seated the turf grass into his site,
- [00:01:03.960]and we stirred it up, tilled it up, first,
- [00:01:07.400]to incorporate the tubers that were already here,
- [00:01:10.240]all over the plots, so we had an even stand of tubers
- [00:01:13.780]throughout the plots.
- [00:01:15.700]Next what we did was we seated the tall fescue,
- [00:01:18.580]and we came in with various herbicides,
- [00:01:20.920]trying to figure out which ones would be safe on the turf,
- [00:01:23.300]and which ones would also control the yellow nutsedge.
- [00:01:26.680]So, for starters, we used some of the products
- [00:01:29.760]that we've been using for many years,
- [00:01:31.550]Sedgehammer, Dismiss, we threw in Tenacity
- [00:01:35.130]because it has good seeding safety on tall fescue,
- [00:01:38.240]and also research has shown that it does pretty well
- [00:01:41.310]on yellow nutsedge in a new seeding.
- [00:01:44.020]Another couple products that are newer, Celero,
- [00:01:47.090]and Vexis, were thrown into the mix,
- [00:01:49.900]and then the older one
- [00:01:51.190]that's kind of been the standard for many years,
- [00:01:53.450]prior to some of these new ones, is Basagran.
- [00:01:58.430]And in looking into what some of these herbicides
- [00:02:00.460]that we've used in the past and that we're using now,
- [00:02:03.960]these newer ones, we looked at
- [00:02:05.700]some different timings as well,
- [00:02:07.150]as following just the label's recommendation
- [00:02:09.630]on initial apps, plus sequential apps,
- [00:02:13.670]and those are at various timings,
- [00:02:15.100]either from two weeks, out to four weeks,
- [00:02:17.600]depending on the product,
- [00:02:19.160]and each product did contain
- [00:02:20.550]it's surfactant when at recommended.
- [00:02:22.680]So, when looking at some of these products,
- [00:02:24.660]some of them did very well at controlling nutsedge,
- [00:02:27.430]some of them did very well at controlling tall fescue,
- [00:02:29.640]so we'll try and cipher out
- [00:02:30.860]which ones were pretty good for seeding,
- [00:02:33.520]and which ones were alone good
- [00:02:34.730]for controlling yellow nutsedge.
- [00:02:36.910]So for starters, the first one, we have the untreated check,
- [00:02:40.840]which is full of yellow nutsedge,
- [00:02:42.740]we're probably at that 75-80% yellow nutsedge in the plots,
- [00:02:47.830]if we move over and look at our Tenacity application,
- [00:02:51.030]there was two apps that went down
- [00:02:53.300]at the start of three to five leaf,
- [00:02:55.840]or three to five leaf tiller of yellow nutsedge,
- [00:02:59.390]and you can see that we have pretty good control
- [00:03:01.400]compared to the untreated,
- [00:03:03.010]and we also have almost 85% percent stand of tall fescue,
- [00:03:08.410]and, just to show this one first,
- [00:03:10.310]because this is probably the best plot we have,
- [00:03:12.420]in this entire study in terms of tall fescue cover,
- [00:03:16.370]because it controlled a lot of the other weeds,
- [00:03:18.430]and also it did control, I would say upwards
- [00:03:20.860]of 85-90% of the yellow nutsedge.
- [00:03:25.160]Moving along, Sedgehammer is another
- [00:03:27.310]really good product on yellow nutsedge,
- [00:03:29.310]as you can see, it's probably the best,
- [00:03:31.160]one of the best products
- [00:03:32.119]that you control the yellow nutsedge itself,
- [00:03:34.580]the negative is it did control the seedlings of tall fescue,
- [00:03:37.840]so we don't have much tall fescue in this plot, maybe 5%,
- [00:03:41.000]but we do have almost zero yellow nutsedge,
- [00:03:44.150]but you can see the other weeds did encroach in
- [00:03:46.460]as it does not control those as well,
- [00:03:48.140]such as not weed, crabgrass, and purslane,
- [00:03:53.010]so those are starting to take over the plot.
- [00:03:54.340]And this was two apps of Sedgehammer
- [00:03:56.340]at the lower rate of .6 ounces per acre.
- [00:03:59.890]Next we have Sedgehammer at 1.3 ounces per acre,
- [00:04:03.290]two applications, same thing,
- [00:04:05.440]100% control, Sedgehammer does
- [00:04:07.570]a really good job on yellow nutsedge.
- [00:04:10.600]So the next plots, we have Dismiss,
- [00:04:13.040]this is at the label rates, two four ounce applications,
- [00:04:17.100]and you can see that we did control,
- [00:04:18.780]maybe 50% of yellow nutsedge, but it's not 100% controlled,
- [00:04:24.200]and the turf in here is actually,
- [00:04:26.570]you can't see it as well because there's a lot of weeds,
- [00:04:28.690]but, it did not control the turf, which is good,
- [00:04:31.450]so we did, we were able to establish some of the tall fescue
- [00:04:34.570]in this plot as well, similar to Tenacity.
- [00:04:39.170]Dismiss at the single application rate, of the high rate,
- [00:04:43.010]eight ounces per acre, you can see
- [00:04:45.030]that there is yellow nutsedge in this plot,
- [00:04:47.090]it didn't control it, but we did get some control,
- [00:04:49.550]I'm not sure if it's 50%,
- [00:04:51.280]but it might be 30-40% control of yellow nutsedge,
- [00:04:55.440]and we didn't control a lot of the other weeds,
- [00:04:57.100]but there is tall fescue in this plot,
- [00:04:58.343]it's just tough to see, maybe 30-40% did survive.
- [00:05:03.450]Moving along to the next product, Celero, at the high rate,
- [00:05:06.910]or not the high rate, but the medium rate,
- [00:05:09.960]medium to low rate, eight ounces per acre,
- [00:05:12.530]this was two applications,
- [00:05:14.590]and you can see that it did control
- [00:05:15.947]the yellow nutsedge very well,
- [00:05:18.010]but it also controlled tall fescue very well.
- [00:05:20.230]So, not recommended in a new seeding,
- [00:05:22.900]but in an established stand,
- [00:05:24.460]it would do really well on yellow nutsedge,
- [00:05:26.380]and if you move it up to the higher rate,
- [00:05:28.060]which would be the next plot, 14 ounces per acre,
- [00:05:31.520]almost 100% control of yellow nutsedge,
- [00:05:34.390]also almost 100% control of tall fescue,
- [00:05:37.510]but, we did learn that we don't wanna use this in a seeding,
- [00:05:40.450]but in an established stand,
- [00:05:42.200]it'd be a very good product to use.
- [00:05:45.630]The next one, the new products
- [00:05:47.010]that just came out recently is Vexis,
- [00:05:50.100]Vexis has shown really good control on yellow nutsedge,
- [00:05:52.800]in this trial, for instance,
- [00:05:54.220]it seemed to only control maybe 50% of the yellow nutsedge,
- [00:05:58.590]and this was at the one application,
- [00:06:01.940]so we're seeing a pretty decent amount
- [00:06:04.170]of yellow nutsedge in the plots,
- [00:06:06.720]tall fescue did not really like the Vexis app,
- [00:06:09.610]so there was some negativity with the tall fescue,
- [00:06:13.300]and it did control both.
- [00:06:16.290]This would be the next application
- [00:06:18.360]which would be two apps of Vexis,
- [00:06:20.670]and we've got a little bit better control,
- [00:06:22.630]and you can actually see that it might still be doing
- [00:06:24.540]a little bit of control on the yellow nutsedge,
- [00:06:27.070]so it might be a little bit more long term,
- [00:06:29.550]but, we also control the tall fescue in this plot as well,
- [00:06:32.570]so not recommended at seeding, but,
- [00:06:35.020]good potential for controlling, in this plot,
- [00:06:37.710]maybe 50% of the yellow nutsedge.
- [00:06:40.520]The last products we looked at were all post applications,
- [00:06:43.680]which were at that three to five leaf stage,
- [00:06:45.410]and then their recommendation for the sequential app.
- [00:06:48.060]Here we applied the same products pre,
- [00:06:50.370]so this would've been before, right at seeding,
- [00:06:53.220]and right when the yellow nutsedge was emerging,
- [00:06:56.160]and this was about May one,
- [00:06:58.670]and you can see that Sedgehammer applied early on,
- [00:07:01.360]before the yellow nutsedge was really up,
- [00:07:03.290]still did a pretty good job of controlling,
- [00:07:05.240]this was with one application,
- [00:07:07.020]and we maybe have 5% yellow nutsedge in the plot,
- [00:07:10.470]obviously it controlled tall fescue as well,
- [00:07:12.530]so not good for seedings,
- [00:07:13.870]but really good for yellow nutsedge control.
- [00:07:17.290]Next we did Dismiss also as the pre app,
- [00:07:19.940]you can see that it really didn't control
- [00:07:21.970]a lot of the yellow nutsedge,
- [00:07:23.090]it was too early, as a pre,
- [00:07:25.550]it works better as a post application,
- [00:07:28.510]so we did find out that Dismiss doesn't work as well
- [00:07:32.310]when you put it before the yellow nutsedge is emerged.
- [00:07:37.100]Next we have Vexis, same thing,
- [00:07:39.340]it did not work as well as a pre,
- [00:07:41.410]before the yellow nutsedge was up,
- [00:07:43.440]we still maybe got 30-40% control,
- [00:07:47.160]but obviously it's probably better to wait
- [00:07:49.160]until the yellow nutsedge is up,
- [00:07:50.830]and it also did control the tall fescue seedings
- [00:07:53.360]so not recommended at time of seeding.
- [00:07:56.770]Next, Celero as a pre,
- [00:07:59.150]you can see that this plot is very bare,
- [00:08:01.020]it did control almost all the yellow nutsedge in this plot,
- [00:08:03.937]and that was just one application at 14 ounces per acre,
- [00:08:07.450]and it did also control the tall fescue.
- [00:08:09.600]But, if we have to go out early in the season,
- [00:08:11.800]Celero might be a great choice
- [00:08:13.060]in trying to control yellow nutsedge
- [00:08:14.550]that we've seen in previous years,
- [00:08:17.150]before it even emerges and before it becomes a problem.
- [00:08:21.450]Next up, we did put Tenacity, and the pre,
- [00:08:23.990]this was just a single app,
- [00:08:25.870]and you can see that
- [00:08:26.980]it doesn't do as well with one application,
- [00:08:29.500]and earlier on, when the yellow nutsedge is just emerging,
- [00:08:33.870]or before it's emerging,
- [00:08:34.990]because you lose some of that efficacy,
- [00:08:36.900]and two apps is usually recommended
- [00:08:38.470]to try and get better control of the weeds,
- [00:08:40.480]but we do have tall fescue in the plot,
- [00:08:42.140]just the weeds are starting to encroach
- [00:08:44.640]and take over this plot.
- [00:08:46.470]And last, Basagran T/O wasn't included in the pre app,
- [00:08:50.250]but it was in the post,
- [00:08:51.920]and it was last on the list,
- [00:08:53.640]because it's one of the older ones,
- [00:08:54.891]you can see that we do have
- [00:08:56.620]a lot of tall fescue in this plot,
- [00:08:58.060]and it did statistically show
- [00:08:59.810]that it was up there with some of the better ones,
- [00:09:02.553]like Tenacity, but it did not control
- [00:09:05.380]yellow nutsedge completely, but it did drop it down
- [00:09:08.420]to a lot lower level, maybe 25-30%,
- [00:09:12.040]compared to the control, so, it still does a good job,
- [00:09:15.620]as an older product, and it can do good things in turf.
- [00:09:21.200]Well I hope I could give a good overview
- [00:09:22.800]of some of the treatments that we used
- [00:09:24.490]on yellow nutsedge in this trial,
- [00:09:27.470]and also, what I will show is,
- [00:09:29.670]I'm gonna put out some of the stats on this,
- [00:09:33.050]that I'll explain, and we can go through
- [00:09:35.532]where they all stood against the untreated,
- [00:09:39.150]and which ones were some of the best treatments
- [00:09:41.010]that we could use in the near future.
- [00:09:45.520]Here's a look at some of the treatments
- [00:09:49.150]that we used for this plot,
- [00:09:51.410]we have basically what herbicide was used,
- [00:09:57.470]the rate, whether or not
- [00:09:59.150]there was surfactant included or not,
- [00:10:01.410]and then also the application timing,
- [00:10:03.300]so the initial three tiller,
- [00:10:06.260]and then this one has a sequential at 21 days after,
- [00:10:09.480]the initial three tiller was May 20th,
- [00:10:12.850]and then the pre application
- [00:10:14.530]that we're talking about would've been,
- [00:10:16.900]I have it labeled here as April 15th to May one,
- [00:10:19.530]it actually went out on April 30th,
- [00:10:21.650]so that would've been the pre app,
- [00:10:23.410]which would've been, at the time of seeding,
- [00:10:26.530]whereas this would've been roughly two to three weeks,
- [00:10:29.680]three weeks after seeding.
- [00:10:32.930]So you have your different treatments here, and rates,
- [00:10:36.600]and also our plot correspondings here,
- [00:10:40.030]so we had three reps of each treatment.
- [00:10:47.010]Looking at some of the data,
- [00:10:49.110]you can see here we have percent yellow nutsedge,
- [00:10:51.930]and this was rated on July 21st,
- [00:10:54.430]on the various treatments on an April 30th seeding.
- [00:10:58.990]So what we have is the untreated control
- [00:11:02.290]ended up having 62% yellow nutsedge.
- [00:11:06.150]The LSD, which is basically the variation in between plots,
- [00:11:10.170]and reps, is 22, so anything that was in that range,
- [00:11:17.337]within 22 of the untreated control
- [00:11:19.360]was not significantly better than the untreated check.
- [00:11:23.040]So, not very many fell into that category,
- [00:11:25.348]in terms of yellow nutsedge cover,
- [00:11:30.080]Dismiss one app, as a pre, was really the only one
- [00:11:35.370]that stood out and it was not much better
- [00:11:37.790]than doing nothing at all.
- [00:11:40.410]A couple of them were really close,
- [00:11:42.420]but you can see that a lot of them were well below,
- [00:11:45.340]and did a very good job of reducing the number,
- [00:11:48.840]or the percentage of yellow nutsedge.
- [00:11:51.680]And this is looking at percent yellow nutsedge cover,
- [00:11:55.950]so the next set of data that I'm gonna show
- [00:11:59.020]is yellow nutsedge control,
- [00:12:01.610]so this is based off of the untreated check,
- [00:12:04.530]so how much control do we get out of each of these products?
- [00:12:08.290]Once again, the LSD on this is 32,
- [00:12:11.267]and that accounts for the variation in between plots,
- [00:12:14.140]so really, the only one
- [00:12:15.240]that was not showing any significant benefit
- [00:12:19.980]was that same application,
- [00:12:21.600]Dismiss at one application as a pre, of eight ounces.
- [00:12:27.230]Everything else actually did better
- [00:12:30.410]than the untreated check,
- [00:12:31.860]in terms of yellow nutsedge control.
- [00:12:34.510]Obviously some did very well,
- [00:12:36.890]where I would consider these in this red range up top,
- [00:12:42.070]where you can see that Dismiss with two apps,
- [00:12:46.740]and Sedgehammer as a pre with one app,
- [00:12:49.740]a range from that almost 80 percent,
- [00:12:52.660]and then we have Sedgehammer, Tenacity,
- [00:12:56.470]Celero, they were almost 100%
- [00:12:59.670]or at 100% control of yellow nutsedge,
- [00:13:03.150]so any of these in this upper category,
- [00:13:05.400]I would consider to be very good control,
- [00:13:09.950]and, would be ones to look at
- [00:13:12.210]if you do have a serious problem with yellow nutsedge.
- [00:13:14.500]Obviously, once again, in our plots here,
- [00:13:16.470]we had a significant amount of yellow nutsedge,
- [00:13:19.800]I'm sure there are instances where it's that high,
- [00:13:21.740]but in most lawns, cases are not this severe,
- [00:13:26.390]so I would guess that a lot of these products
- [00:13:28.720]would do a pretty good job of controlling yellow nutsedge.
- [00:13:33.496]Now, considering this was a seeding,
- [00:13:35.590]we wanna look at how much tall fescue
- [00:13:37.470]we actually established using these products,
- [00:13:40.060]and, it sticks out pretty easily here, anything,
- [00:13:46.330]the untreated check ended up
- [00:13:48.050]with about eight percent cover of small fescue,
- [00:13:50.980]that was to use 20, so anything,
- [00:13:54.000]basically 28 or below really didn't do any better,
- [00:13:59.160]and some of them actually did worse
- [00:14:00.930]because they killed the tall fescue seeds.
- [00:14:04.930]So, we can see that there's a couple products,
- [00:14:06.900]especially tenacity with the two apps,
- [00:14:09.270]you can see that we're almost upwards
- [00:14:10.740]of 75-80% cover of small fescue, which is pretty good,
- [00:14:15.930]considering the amount of pressure we had from weeds,
- [00:14:18.990]and Dismiss, two apps, seemed to be a little harsher
- [00:14:23.730]on the tall fescue versus the one app,
- [00:14:26.270]we were upwards of 35% cover,
- [00:14:28.760]and then Tenacity has a pre one single app,
- [00:14:31.810]actually resulted in 55, and Basagran also was at that,
- [00:14:36.630]around that 50% tall fescue cover.
- [00:14:39.270]So there's a couple products,
- [00:14:40.260]if you're looking at yellow nutsedge specifically,
- [00:14:42.960]Tenacity actually covered a lot of the other broadleaf weeds
- [00:14:46.850]and some of the annual grasses,
- [00:14:48.860]so that helps tall fescue establishment as well,
- [00:14:51.390]so looking at establishment alone,
- [00:14:53.520]this product Tenacity is probably the number one go to
- [00:14:57.549]for controlling yellow nutsedge within a new seeding,
- [00:15:01.560]and then after that establishment year,
- [00:15:04.130]a lot of these other products, Sedgehammer, Celero,
- [00:15:06.410]do a very good job on said yellow nutsedge as well.
- [00:15:10.750]So I hope you all enjoyed it,
- [00:15:11.840]and I hope you're sitting in a nice cool area watching this,
- [00:15:15.570]enjoying a nice cold beverage of choice,
- [00:15:17.840]and we thank you for watching, and we'll talk to you later.
