- [00:00:03.140]Hello and welcome to UNL. My name is Megan Kelly,
- [00:00:06.830]and I'm an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Health
- [00:00:09.860]Sciences. My teaching and research is focused on community health, health equity,
- [00:00:14.900]and health communication and program development.
- [00:00:18.020]I'd like to introduce you to one of the programs in our department,
- [00:00:20.840]Community Health and Wellness.
- [00:00:22.730]Something I love about this program of study is how adaptable it is to a wide
- [00:00:27.020]range of student interests and career paths.
- [00:00:29.990]Students who have excelled in this program have been working towards careers in
- [00:00:33.620]nursing, physical therapy, public health, chiropractic, medicine,
- [00:00:38.600]nutrition, personal training, dentistry, social work,
- [00:00:42.770]education, business. And I'm sure other areas that I'm not even aware of.
- [00:00:49.520]The unique aspect of this program is that it is designed to prepare you for
- [00:00:53.240]certification as a health education specialist.
- [00:00:56.510]The CHES credential conveys to potential employers that you have a certain set
- [00:01:00.980]of competencies,
- [00:01:02.120]which you can see here. When it comes to searching for employment,
- [00:01:05.960]adding CHES to your signature can help you stand out in a crowd.
- [00:01:11.660]The past couple of months have really demonstrated the importance of this
- [00:01:14.810]program of study.
- [00:01:16.310]The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how social determinants influence health
- [00:01:20.420]outcomes differentially in communities across the globe. Conditions such as
- [00:01:25.280]economic stability, social connection, health literacy, job opportunities,
- [00:01:30.260]place of residence, and race and ethnicity.
- [00:01:32.660]All influence risk of exposure to and potential severity of a disease. In our
- [00:01:37.730]program.
- [00:01:38.270]you will learn how to work with partners and stakeholders to learn about and
- [00:01:42.440]develop approaches to address community health concerns such as those posed by
- [00:01:46.610]COVID-19. These skills can be applied in so many contexts,
- [00:01:51.020]healthcare settings, workplaces, businesses, neighborhoods, schools, and more.
- [00:01:57.590]If you are interested in learning more about the Community Health and Wellness
- [00:02:00.710]option and the Nutrition and Health Sciences Department.
- [00:02:03.800]Please, take a look at our website and chat with your academic advisor about how
- [00:02:07.880]the Community Health and Wellness program could fit with your longterm goals.
- [00:02:11.990]We look forward to welcoming you to our community.
