- [00:00:03.140]Hello,
- [00:00:03.500]my name is Sabine Zempleni and I am Assistant Professor of Practice in Nutrition
- [00:00:07.700]and Health Sciences. And I will talk to a little bit about my Nutrition
- [00:00:12.680]100 Healthy Living section and how I approach, uh,
- [00:00:16.760]classes and what you can expect. Um,
- [00:00:20.390]so for another class, I,
- [00:00:22.670]I keep tabs on what's going on in the media and what is trending.
- [00:00:26.750]And I stumbled over this one, get a little bit out of the way. Um,
- [00:00:31.490]the one food you should never have before 10:00 AM,
- [00:00:35.060]because it slowly destroys your metabolism. What,
- [00:00:39.650]so what do you think about it? True, False.
- [00:00:43.820]Could you explain why it's true or false or is that just a gut feeling?
- [00:00:48.980]This is, this is, this really sounds weird. Um,
- [00:00:52.370]so I promise you at the end of Nutrition 100,
- [00:00:55.970]you will be able to make a decision if this is true or false,
- [00:00:59.810]and actually explain it to me as well,
- [00:01:03.290]or to your friends, or to your family, or to yourself. Um,
- [00:01:07.520]so what are we doing in nutrition in healthy living? Well,
- [00:01:10.700]it's the first class on the course menu for Nutrition and Health Sciences.
- [00:01:15.710]And that's why it has a little bit of everything. Uh, it,
- [00:01:19.550]we ha I have a nutrition module and then exercise module.
- [00:01:23.900]We will talk about behavior change. We will talk about,
- [00:01:28.460]um, stress relief because there's is really important for college students.
- [00:01:33.020]We will talk about, uh, addiction.
- [00:01:35.900]And so you will study,
- [00:01:38.750]you will study the science behind the science, definitively,
- [00:01:42.740]the scientific facts, memorize some, you take an exam. Yes,
- [00:01:46.610]this is part of the class, but I'm also really big into,
- [00:01:51.500]uh, learning new skills, applying content.
- [00:01:54.950]And so you will not just, uh, studying, uh,
- [00:01:58.800]nutrients and foods, but you will also, uh,
- [00:02:02.300]analyze your own diet, apply this content,
- [00:02:05.690]think about how you could improve your diet to a healthier diet. Uh,
- [00:02:10.250]and then you will be in a small group where you are,
- [00:02:13.010]where you support each other, share information, share ideas,
- [00:02:17.150]how to reach your goals, uh, and you, and the same.
- [00:02:20.510]It will do the same thing for exercise. For the exercise portion.
- [00:02:24.200]You develop based on the recommendation, your own exercise program,
- [00:02:28.580]with the activities you love, uh,
- [00:02:31.460]and the amount of time you are willing to spend and the goals you have for
- [00:02:36.290]yourself and healthy living. And so very,
- [00:02:39.230]very individualized component that applies the content we learn in this class.
- [00:02:45.200]Um, which brings me back to this one again as,
- [00:02:49.760]so what do you think? What, what, let me move to the other side. Now,
- [00:02:53.420]what foods,
- [00:02:54.590]what foods did they talk about a cereal, or the,
- [00:02:58.740]the popular avocado toast, or bacon, or eggs, or a muffin?
- [00:03:05.110]Well, actually they were talking about a muffin, um,
- [00:03:08.800]and they were stating that a muffin is high in sugar and fat and calories.
- [00:03:14.800]They didn't talk about the 10:00 AM cut off,
- [00:03:18.670]and why that was,
- [00:03:19.810]or what do we mean by slowly destroying your metabolism?
- [00:03:24.610]It's just that you probably gain weight if you do that every morning.
- [00:03:28.540]Um, so what, so these, these, uh,
- [00:03:31.600]10:00 AM and slowly, uh, destroying your metabolism, this is really click bait.
- [00:03:36.520]There's really no truth behind it. Uh,
- [00:03:40.000]so what would we say here in, after you finish this class?
- [00:03:45.070]Well, um, we,
- [00:03:46.740]we would admit that muffin is probably not the healthiest food in the world for
- [00:03:52.360]breakfast. Yes. It tends to have a lot of added sugar.
- [00:03:56.200]It has a lot of fat. It has,
- [00:03:58.850]it's just a highly processed food in many cases,
- [00:04:01.900]if you don't bake that yourself. Um,
- [00:04:05.290]now what if you love a muffin and a cup of coffee for breakfast?
- [00:04:09.880]We also say that's okay.
- [00:04:11.860]Just not every day we learn what healthy foods are for breakfast,
- [00:04:17.170]but we also acknowledge that it's fine to eat occasionally something you really
- [00:04:23.320]love and enjoy, and you should really enjoy it then. So,
- [00:04:27.940]um, this is a little bit of an inside work.
- [00:04:31.140]What I do in Nutrition 100, just to quick glimpse. I'm also, like I said,
- [00:04:35.620]I'm also teaching a class 200 level class,
- [00:04:39.910]a nutrition through the life cycle,
- [00:04:42.160]and I'm teaching a science communication class in the junior year.
- [00:04:46.210]So there is a good chance you will meet me either online or in-person.
- [00:04:51.490]And, um, yeah. And I'm really looking forward to, uh,
- [00:04:56.110]to meeting you at one point or another. Bye.
