[00:00:12.420]So it's things like our master's program, our MBA program.
[00:00:15.520]And I just wanted to take a few minutes
[00:00:17.640]to welcome everybody back for the fall 2020 semester.
[00:00:21.650]And I'm here in my favorite part of Hawks Hall.
[00:00:25.590]And for those of you who are returning,
[00:00:28.200]you know this area well,
[00:00:30.000]and for those who will first be coming to campus this fall,
[00:00:34.470]this is in the, I guess it's the North part of Hawks Hall
[00:00:37.840]and this is kind of crazy modern art looking thing here.
[00:00:42.370]It's actually my favorite part of Hawks Hall
[00:00:44.840]and my friends think that's kinda strange
[00:00:46.770]because I don't really like modern art,
[00:00:49.690]but I wanna tell you
[00:00:50.523]why this is my favorite part of Hawks Hall.
[00:00:52.480]And the reason is
[00:00:53.313]because I think this crazy modern art thing
[00:00:55.840]actually captures what happens,
[00:01:01.340]when any individual
[00:01:02.580]and every individual walks into the College of Business.
[00:01:05.530]So the lower part, lower part is like to me,
[00:01:08.810]every one of us coming back in the fall
[00:01:10.890]or every time we come into the College of Business,
[00:01:12.860]we're starting low and notice how,
[00:01:14.553]when it goes up, it kind of goes up and out.
[00:01:17.800]To me that represents the growth that happens
[00:01:20.070]to every individual in the College of Business.
[00:01:22.950]The learning, formation of relationships,
[00:01:26.370]the maturing, kind of everything
[00:01:28.980]that's kind of building us into a better version of ourself.
[00:01:33.810]And then way up at the top, if you can see that,
[00:01:37.340]there's kind of this thing coming down,
[00:01:39.830]reaching down from way up at the top.
[00:01:41.970]And to me, that kind of represents the transcendent,
[00:01:45.210]which for some people that might be God,
[00:01:46.990]for some people that might be the universe or karma,
[00:01:50.590]for some people the kind of common good of the society,
[00:01:54.620]anything transcendent to me is anything that takes us beyond
[00:01:58.460]or out of ourselves.
[00:02:00.160]And then they meet right there,
[00:02:03.200]it's kind of like right even with the third floor,
[00:02:05.630]which is where the Dean's office is.
[00:02:08.190]And I'm not sure what the symbolism of that is.
[00:02:10.020]But the symbolism to me is those points meet
[00:02:14.380]at a place that represents what business can be for society.
[00:02:19.780]Flourishing, the creation of wealth, the contribution to,
[00:02:26.190]and building up of the collective and common good.
[00:02:30.240]And so it starts at the bottom with each of us.
[00:02:32.640]And I think this is one reason why I'm excited
[00:02:34.850]to be back here in the fall.
[00:02:36.240]And for every one of us to be here.
[00:02:38.530]It starts with the investment that we make
[00:02:41.480]and the commitment that we make to learn, to grow.
[00:02:44.940]And it ends or meets in the middle,
[00:02:47.340]which to me represents all of the good
[00:02:51.150]that can come from business and the building up
[00:02:54.650]and the promotion of human flourishing
[00:02:57.510]and the common good of society,
[00:03:00.710]which to me is what Nebraska Business is all about.
[00:03:04.400]So welcome back and I look forward to meeting many of you
