- [00:00:03.080]We're excited to welcome you
- [00:00:04.520]to our collective family of world-leading faculty and staff
- [00:00:08.390]who continue to be recognized for our teaching,
- [00:00:11.280]and research, and creative excellence
- [00:00:13.400]regionally, nationally, and all around the world.
- [00:00:17.510]I'm looking forward to interacting with you more
- [00:00:20.070]and getting to know each of you.
- [00:00:22.490]You're now a part of a big ten, land-grant,
- [00:00:25.350]flagship, comprehensive research university,
- [00:00:28.040]the people's university of the state of Nebraska.
- [00:00:31.430]I'm sure you've come here from places all over the map,
- [00:00:35.740]and as someone who didn't grow up here
- [00:00:37.870]but has spent now over 20 years of my life here
- [00:00:40.760]and made it my home, I can tell you
- [00:00:43.260]that Nebraska is a special place,
- [00:00:46.640]and our university's place in and importance to this state
- [00:00:50.520]is really special.
- [00:00:52.240]We are, in fact, Nebraska.
- [00:00:55.460]As the only major research university in our state,
- [00:00:58.440]we are counted on by our fellow Nebraskans
- [00:01:00.860]to educate their young people and the next generation
- [00:01:04.260]and prepare them for the world,
- [00:01:06.290]to attract new talent, to create opportunity
- [00:01:09.340]through research and innovation
- [00:01:10.970]in our scholarship and creativity,
- [00:01:13.100]and do outreach throughout our state
- [00:01:15.580]through extension and all of our faculty.
- [00:01:19.160]Together, we have a unique opportunity
- [00:01:21.620]to shape the future of this state through the work we do,
- [00:01:25.220]and the people here care deeply that we do it.
- [00:01:30.540]We have remarkable upward momentum
- [00:01:32.620]at the current time as you're joining us.
- [00:01:34.730]We're at historical highs for providing access
- [00:01:37.640]to exceptional higher education for Nebraskans,
- [00:01:40.900]the highest in the last few years in our 151-year history.
- [00:01:45.400]Our fall 2019 enrollment of 25,390
- [00:01:49.970]represents the sixth consecutive year
- [00:01:52.470]of enrollment above 25,000 students.
- [00:01:56.520]In the 2018-19 academic year,
- [00:01:59.030]we awarded degrees to almost 5900 new Husker alumni,
- [00:02:04.000]the highest number ever in a year,
- [00:02:06.520]bringing our total number of graduates recently
- [00:02:09.180]to nearly 300,000, with over 200,000 Husker alumni
- [00:02:14.150]now living all throughout the world.
- [00:02:17.120]We're also setting new heights in the quantity and quality
- [00:02:19.960]of our collective research and creative activity.
- [00:02:23.370]We continued our record-breaking progress
- [00:02:25.650]with $317 million in research expenditures this past year
- [00:02:30.500]and representing a 26% growth
- [00:02:33.760]in our research over the past decade.
- [00:02:37.170]The last three years in a row,
- [00:02:39.080]the University of Nebraska system
- [00:02:41.100]has ranked among the top hundred
- [00:02:42.900]academic institutions worldwide
- [00:02:45.710]in earning U.S. patents and moving our innovation
- [00:02:48.400]out into the public, with 44 patents earned in 2019,
- [00:02:53.619]35 of those here from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
- [00:02:59.150]What you're going to do here at Nebraska is going to matter.
- [00:03:02.960]We believe here in the power of every person.
- [00:03:06.030]When each of us chooses not to rest on our strengths,
- [00:03:09.110]and instead we choose to stretch our strengths
- [00:03:11.480]and combine them with others in collaboration,
- [00:03:14.250]that's how we do big things here.
- [00:03:17.180]So I welcome you today, and I also call on you
- [00:03:20.420]and challenge you to look for ways to support our students,
- [00:03:23.970]particularly with increasing numbers
- [00:03:26.390]of first generation students,
- [00:03:28.000]and growing diversity of our student body
- [00:03:30.670]across all of our demographic parameters,
- [00:03:34.520]and by communicating about your students,
- [00:03:37.330]using your support systems so students
- [00:03:40.270]get the timely academic support that they need
- [00:03:43.360]in their academic journey.
- [00:03:46.040]And I call on you to be practitioners
- [00:03:48.580]and models of respect for all in our campus community,
- [00:03:53.500]to be bold in your research and creative activity,
- [00:03:56.720]and to explore ways to collaborate
- [00:03:58.930]with your colleagues across the campus in new ways.
- [00:04:03.530]The progress we make toward our goals
- [00:04:05.670]will be because of the talent and energy
- [00:04:08.410]of our people led by our faculty.
- [00:04:10.880]So in advance, I want to thank you for the enormity
- [00:04:14.600]of your amazing contributions of what I know they will be
- [00:04:18.290]to our university community.
- [00:04:21.430]Before I close, I want to just highlight the fact
- [00:04:25.060]that you're joining us in an exceptional year
- [00:04:28.480]for three big reasons.
- [00:04:30.950]One, is earlier this year, we implemented
- [00:04:34.680]our N2025 strategic plan.
- [00:04:38.080]Leaders from across our campus
- [00:04:39.860]have helped to chart the course for the university
- [00:04:42.720]by working on this plan over the last several years.
- [00:04:46.370]It looks out to our next 25-year period of history.
- [00:04:50.840]We plan to be an even bigger and bolder university
- [00:04:53.450]and an even more robust engine
- [00:04:55.840]for economic development here in Nebraska.
- [00:04:58.950]The overarching theme for this plan,
- [00:05:01.670]every person and every interaction matters,
- [00:05:04.980]speaks clearly and loudly to the aim,
- [00:05:07.230]strategies, and targets of the N2025 plan,
- [00:05:11.940]and it resonates so personally with who we are.
- [00:05:16.640]Secondly, this summer, we just recently launched
- [00:05:20.020]the UNL journey for anti-racism and racial equity.
- [00:05:24.930]Every one of us must play a role in this,
- [00:05:28.260]and I intend personally to be deeply engaged
- [00:05:31.370]along with our senior leadership team,
- [00:05:33.740]as we seek to learn what racism is,
- [00:05:37.350]what the result of it is,
- [00:05:39.460]how it's systemic perhaps, even in our institution,
- [00:05:42.590]and how we take action to combat it.
- [00:05:46.720]And if these two priorities
- [00:05:48.220]weren't big enough for this year,
- [00:05:50.600]you're also very aware that we're navigating
- [00:05:52.790]our way through a global pandemic
- [00:05:54.910]unlike any we've seen in well over 100 years.
- [00:05:58.870]I know COVID-19 has brought personal change for each of us,
- [00:06:02.640]and for so many to juggle
- [00:06:04.380]many competing priorities simultaneously
- [00:06:07.460]professionally and personally.
- [00:06:10.370]I appreciate the incredible work you're doing
- [00:06:13.010]and that you will be doing in this new academic year ahead.
- [00:06:17.860]We know that this virus can be unpredictable and uncertain,
- [00:06:21.790]and we will need to be nimble
- [00:06:23.530]and plan for ultimate flexibility
- [00:06:25.840]as we move through the time period ahead.
- [00:06:29.590]At Nebraska, we find ways to figure it out and get it done.
- [00:06:34.630]We live by in our grit, our glory.
- [00:06:38.520]I've been so incredibly proud at how
- [00:06:40.620]our community of students, our faculty, and our staff
- [00:06:44.030]have led through the change of this tumultuous year so far,
- [00:06:48.480]and I believe we will continue to find ways to thrive,
- [00:06:52.820]even in this challenging time that we're living in.
- [00:06:56.620]Thank you so much for what you will do in the future.
- [00:06:59.270]Best wishes to you as you get started
- [00:07:01.980]with your career here at UNL.
- [00:07:04.100]I know that it will be an unforgettable year ahead.
