- [00:00:00.580]Nebraska students spend the summer in 17 small towns.
- [00:00:04.260]The focus, improve the future of rural America.
- [00:00:07.280]University of Nebraska's Director of Leadership
- [00:00:09.320]and Engagement shares more.
- [00:00:11.795]We began the program eight years ago
- [00:00:15.040]and since then we've had 90 students
- [00:00:17.460]go into rural Nebraska communities.
- [00:00:19.690]In fact, 53 communities have been impacted
- [00:00:23.040]through an economic benefit of $28,000 per community
- [00:00:27.540]where students are paired with community leaders
- [00:00:30.010]to work on projects such as economic development,
- [00:00:33.120]entrepreneurship and the real benefit to the communities
- [00:00:36.450]is that not only are they getting the students' perspective
- [00:00:40.070]but they're tremendous effort
- [00:00:41.230]in accomplishing their project.
- [00:00:43.210]And one of this year's participating students,
- [00:00:45.290]Amanda Most is here with us now in the market day report
- [00:00:48.060]for a further look at all of this.
- [00:00:49.420]Amanda, thank you very much for being part
- [00:00:51.650]of the market day report.
- [00:00:53.350]I understand your fellowship is in the community of Wahoo,
- [00:00:56.380]a town of about 4,500 just North of Lincoln.
- [00:00:59.330]So bring us up to speed on your project.
- [00:01:03.270]Absolutely, thanks for having me.
- [00:01:04.493]Along with my community partners, Savannah and Noskline,
- [00:01:08.220]we've been working on various projects
- [00:01:10.110]throughout the summer.
- [00:01:11.440]One of the projects that we're most excited about though
- [00:01:13.790]is called the HOPE 2020 Campaign.
- [00:01:16.580]HOPE stands for Helping Others Prosper every day.
- [00:01:19.380]And throughout this campaign,
- [00:01:21.040]we've met with community residents
- [00:01:22.880]and leaders and heard about all of the positivity
- [00:01:25.620]that they're spreading whether it be through volunteer
- [00:01:28.170]or various group projects.
- [00:01:30.030]And so we've been able to interview them
- [00:01:31.720]and focus their work on social media
- [00:01:33.660]just really trying to focus
- [00:01:34.900]on all of the good things happening in Wahoo.
- [00:01:37.290]This summer since we all know that it's been kind
- [00:01:39.210]of a trying time in our nation.
- [00:01:41.581]Absolutely, you know maintaining quality healthcare
- [00:01:44.000]in rural America has been an issue facing
- [00:01:45.888]a lot of residents.
- [00:01:47.390]It's even that way in the small community I live near.
- [00:01:50.290]So how are you addressing that
- [00:01:51.740]as part of your experience in Wahoo?
- [00:01:54.961]I've been able to work with Saunders Medical Center
- [00:01:57.562]this summer and certainly addressing this issue
- [00:02:00.320]is much larger than one summer project.
- [00:02:02.480]However, I've been able to learn that
- [00:02:04.260]it really comes down to the culture of the workplace.
- [00:02:07.000]And so helping SMC focus on their culture,
- [00:02:10.131]their workers need to want to show up to work every day
- [00:02:13.300]and work with their coworkers
- [00:02:14.830]and once they have that solid culture established,
- [00:02:17.220]then it will be contagious and other people
- [00:02:19.140]will also desire to work there.
- [00:02:20.530]So it really comes down to that strong vision
- [00:02:22.880]and culture in the workplace.
- [00:02:24.980]Amanda, do you feel like when your fellowship wraps up,
- [00:02:27.960]you'll have made a difference for the community?
- [00:02:32.640]Absolutely, although of course we won't completely change
- [00:02:35.490]the scenery of Wahoo
- [00:02:36.750]or the surrounding area in the course of one summer,
- [00:02:39.260]what we can do is we've been starting conversations,
- [00:02:42.950]sharing our fresh perspective
- [00:02:44.217]and really just challenging everyone to think differently
- [00:02:46.710]and see their community differently.
- [00:02:48.660]So how will you use what you learned
- [00:02:51.170]this summer in planning for your future in your career?
- [00:02:57.520]The leadership skills that I've gained summer
- [00:02:59.790]will carry me very far in life.
- [00:03:02.250]And certainly all of the residents I've been able to meet,
- [00:03:04.770]just keeping those lifelong connections
- [00:03:06.730]but most importantly, showing myself that as an intern,
- [00:03:10.420]I can have the creative freedom to think bigger
- [00:03:12.840]and solve these big challenges.
- [00:03:14.530]And then also just realizing all of the opportunities
- [00:03:17.490]that rural America does offer.
- [00:03:19.200]And certainly someday hope that I can return
- [00:03:21.430]to a rural area and continue to make a difference.
- [00:03:24.060]Well, first of all, thank you very much for your service
- [00:03:25.950]and it is great to see the success that you're having.
- [00:03:28.890]University of Nebraska Lincoln ag student, Amanda Most
- [00:03:31.610]joining us here on the market day report.
