- [00:00:06.610]Atrazine is one of the most commonly used herbicides
- [00:00:09.860]in corn not only in Nebraska,
- [00:00:12.440]but also in several States in the North central,
- [00:00:15.590]as well as in the USA.
- [00:00:18.360]And it has been in the market for the last many years
- [00:00:20.780]and there are some consequences of using
- [00:00:25.120]overuse of Atrazine for example,
- [00:00:27.580]in the state of Nebraska we had some issues of Atrazine,
- [00:00:31.790]groundwater and drinking water contamination.
- [00:00:34.360]And so there were a couple of reviews
- [00:00:36.560]conducted by United States Environmental Protection Agency,
- [00:00:40.300]and there are some restriction on use of Atrazine.
- [00:00:43.620]And it is possible like in future,
- [00:00:45.330]there might be some more restrictions.
- [00:00:46.970]So the objective of this project was to find out
- [00:00:51.500]pre-emergent herbicides in corn without Atrazine,
- [00:00:55.090]that can provide a similar level of weed control
- [00:00:58.570]where you use Atrazine.
- [00:01:00.950]And we greatly appreciate Nebraska Environmental Trust
- [00:01:04.830]to support this project.
- [00:01:08.950]And Atrazine nowadays growers are not using it by itself
- [00:01:13.920]as a pre-emergent or post-emergent herbicide.
- [00:01:16.290]However,
- [00:01:17.123]Atrazine is a tank mixture in number of other
- [00:01:20.420]pre-mix type of herbicides,
- [00:01:22.870]for example Acuron which has Atrazine,
- [00:01:25.950]or there are several other examples
- [00:01:28.550]where Atrazine is a tank mixture partner,
- [00:01:30.760]and it can definitely improve weed control efficacy
- [00:01:34.680]of a number of herbicide products,
- [00:01:36.450]particularly those HPPD inhibiting herbicides.
- [00:01:40.010]When you tank-mix Atrazine with those
- [00:01:41.970]they can provide a good level of weed control.
- [00:01:44.730]But our idea in this project was to
- [00:01:47.470]find out herbicide programs without Atrazine
- [00:01:51.377]for pre-emergence weed control in corn.
- [00:01:54.460]Hi my name is Jasmine Mausbach
- [00:01:56.280]and I'm a Graduate Student in the Weed Science Department
- [00:01:58.670]in the Ahmet Jola lab at UNL.
- [00:02:00.690]And today we'll be talking about
- [00:02:03.830]Atrazine alternatives for pre-weed control and field corn.
- [00:02:07.160]And today we'll start with treatment two,
- [00:02:09.190]which is our weed-free control.
- [00:02:12.000]We applied 2.5 quarts of Acuron,
- [00:02:14.770]which does include Atrazine,
- [00:02:16.730]and two days ago on June 22nd,
- [00:02:18.820]we also applied a post application of
- [00:02:21.040]DiFlexx Roundup and Warrant.
- [00:02:23.110]And if we look at our control,
- [00:02:25.430]has great control great grass and broadleaf control,
- [00:02:28.670]and we'll kind of use this as a reference
- [00:02:30.590]as well as treatment three to our alternative programs.
- [00:02:34.140]So if we move on to treatment three,
- [00:02:36.740]which was 2.2 quarts of Atrazine,
- [00:02:39.290]we can tell that there was not great broadleaf control.
- [00:02:42.080]There's a lot of Palmer in these plots.
- [00:02:44.190]I also see patches of grass.
- [00:02:46.370]So overall the control wasn't that great.
- [00:02:48.650]And this is most likely due to
- [00:02:50.350]Atrazine having only one mode of action,
- [00:02:52.440]which is a group five PS-II inhibitors.
- [00:02:55.820]So as we move on towards these other treatments,
- [00:02:58.680]we'll notice that some have more groups of
- [00:03:00.820]or modes of action so they might have better control.
- [00:03:05.030]So if we move on to treatment four,
- [00:03:06.690]which is just Acuron,
- [00:03:08.200]also contains Atrazine,
- [00:03:09.920]we see that it has great control again,
- [00:03:12.480]as we saw in treatment two.
- [00:03:14.870]I see a little bit of grass and maybe a few Palmer in there,
- [00:03:18.380]but overall great control.
- [00:03:20.230]Acuron again has three modes of action,
- [00:03:23.070]group 27 group five and group 15.
- [00:03:25.800]So again,
- [00:03:27.210]I'm reiterating the fact that
- [00:03:28.530]more modes of action results in better control.
- [00:03:32.060]Moving on to treatment five,
- [00:03:33.720]comparing our Acuron Flexi application to our Acuron,
- [00:03:37.500]Acuron Flexi does not contain Atrazine,
- [00:03:39.690]so it only has two modes of action.
- [00:03:41.590]And we see that there's a little bit less control of grass,
- [00:03:44.600]but overall pretty good control of our broadleaves.
- [00:03:48.520]So moving on to treatment six,
- [00:03:49.870]we had an application of Resicore,
- [00:03:52.660]which has three modes of action.
- [00:03:54.580]We have our group four group 27 and group 15.
- [00:03:58.160]And again we see great broadleaf control,
- [00:04:00.870]a few patches of grasses here and there,
- [00:04:02.670]but overall again great control.
- [00:04:05.460]So in this treatment we had a,
- [00:04:07.690]an application of Balance Flexx,
- [00:04:09.420]which only contains one mode of action,
- [00:04:12.370]which is a group 27 HPPD inhibitor.
- [00:04:15.360]As you can tell we had great grass control,
- [00:04:17.810]but the broadleaf control was about probably 50%.
- [00:04:21.640]So could have been better in terms of the broadleaf control.
- [00:04:26.260]And again that's most likely due to the one mode of action.
- [00:04:30.100]So for treatment 10 we had an application of Harness
- [00:04:33.500]and we see that
- [00:04:35.110]the broadleaves were not controlled very well at all.
- [00:04:37.210]I see some pretty tall common Lambsquarters
- [00:04:40.000]and Palmer in there
- [00:04:40.833]as well as quite a few patches of grass.
- [00:04:44.270]Harness only contains one mode of action,
- [00:04:46.480]which is a group 15.
- [00:04:48.570]So if we compare Harness for our next treatment,
- [00:04:52.760]Harness Maxx,
- [00:04:53.593]we'll see that Harness Maxx has two modes of action.
- [00:04:57.080]So in terms of the control,
- [00:05:00.700]we see that the broadleaf control was greatly increased.
- [00:05:03.600]Again there are some patches of grass,
- [00:05:05.850]but overall great control.
- [00:05:08.600]So for treatment 12 we had a application of Anthem Maxx
- [00:05:12.010]and Anthem Maxx has two modes of action.
- [00:05:14.580]And this time we included a group 14
- [00:05:16.760]on top of a group 15 herbicide.
- [00:05:19.550]And as you can tell,
- [00:05:20.920]great grass control.
- [00:05:21.930]I don't see hardly any grass in there,
- [00:05:24.020]but I do see one common lambsquarter
- [00:05:26.760]right in the middle there.
- [00:05:28.330]Overall though,
- [00:05:29.280]great control.
- [00:05:30.570]All right so for treatment 15,
- [00:05:32.260]we had an application of Prowl H2O.
- [00:05:35.000]Prowl H20 only has one mode of action
- [00:05:37.360]and it's a group three herbicide,
- [00:05:38.760]which is a microtubule inhibitor.
- [00:05:41.610]As you can see,
- [00:05:42.750]the grass control was great,
- [00:05:44.520]broadleaf control,
- [00:05:45.770]eh it was all right about,
- [00:05:47.980]we'll say 70% control.
- [00:05:51.030]And if we compare this mode of action to treatment 16,
- [00:05:56.230]which is Sharpen,
- [00:05:58.340]we used a group 14 herbicide here.
- [00:06:01.820]And as you can see the grass control greatly decreased.
- [00:06:06.790]Broadleaf control seems to be okay.
- [00:06:08.900]But again,
- [00:06:10.110]reiterating the fact that
- [00:06:11.370]the more modes of action you have for application,
- [00:06:14.390]the better control you'll have overall.
- [00:06:18.470]So overall,
- [00:06:19.940]this project shows the importance
- [00:06:21.580]and also the alternatives that we do have to Atrazine.
- [00:06:24.930]As some may know,
- [00:06:26.510]we do have Atrazine-resistant Palmer amaranth
- [00:06:28.850]and red root pigweed in Nebraska so
- [00:06:30.980]having those alternatives are very important.
- [00:06:33.340]Some of those that we saw in this project are Resicore
- [00:06:37.530]Acuron Flexi,
- [00:06:38.363]Anthem Maxx and Harness Maxx.
- [00:06:40.700]On top of applying your pre-herbicides,
- [00:06:43.180]it's also important to apply those post-herbicides.
- [00:06:46.250]As we walked through these treatments,
- [00:06:47.650]we saw that a lot of the weeds were already
- [00:06:49.770]at the six to eight inch phase.
- [00:06:53.200]So applying those post-herbicides like Roundup or Dicamba
- [00:06:58.350]are some of your options in field corn.
- [00:07:00.660]And I would like to thank
- [00:07:01.800]the Nebraska Environmental Trust for sponsoring this project
- [00:07:04.620]and giving us the information we need
- [00:07:08.110]to supply farmers with those Atrazine alternatives.
