- [00:00:06.360]Corn is the most important crop in Nebraska.
- [00:00:09.260]Every year we grow corn on nine to 10 million acres,
- [00:00:12.020]and so this is our number one crop in the state.
- [00:00:17.370]Weed control is also extremely important
- [00:00:19.860]to achieve optimal yield of corn.
- [00:00:22.470]So in this project,
- [00:00:23.700]the objective of this project
- [00:00:24.980]was to compare different herbicide programs
- [00:00:27.650]available in the marketplace
- [00:00:29.070]and see which one can provide better weed control.
- [00:00:31.890]So we have about 15 treatments we are going to discuss here,
- [00:00:36.406]and here is the treatments are provided by industry
- [00:00:39.720]and our idea is to compare them under unbiased companies
- [00:00:43.410]of UNL corn demo project.
- [00:00:46.770]So in past treatment for example,
- [00:00:48.830]Harness Maxx, which is a good combination of two herbicides
- [00:00:52.110]was applied pre-emergence in a mixture with Atrazine
- [00:00:56.440]and then DiFlexx, which is a dicamba-based herbicide
- [00:01:00.120]was applied in tank mixture with Roundup in this project,
- [00:01:04.780]and we are seeing a great level of weed control,
- [00:01:07.680]and this is again because of a good combination
- [00:01:09.850]of multiple synthetic auxin herbicides
- [00:01:13.000]in this herbicide program.
- [00:01:14.600]So this is a great start
- [00:01:16.300]if you want to have a good weed control in corn.
- [00:01:21.410]Particularly, the post-emergence herbicide,
- [00:01:23.520]such as dicamba-based herbicide Diflexx
- [00:01:27.660]is very good on providing control
- [00:01:30.440]of all the broad-leaf weed species,
- [00:01:33.080]for example, waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, marestail,
- [00:01:37.150]and then glyphosate can also provide
- [00:01:40.100]some more activity on grasses,
- [00:01:41.950]so this is a good program
- [00:01:43.430]to start with in weed management in corn.
- [00:01:47.740]For example, some other programs,
- [00:01:49.390]in this case, Balance Flexx was applied
- [00:01:52.510]at three fluid ounces per acre
- [00:01:54.220]in tank mixture with Degree Xtra,
- [00:01:57.311]which is acetochlor and atrazine-based herbicide
- [00:02:01.490]and then again post-emergence application
- [00:02:04.270]was with Diflexx DUO,
- [00:02:06.650]which is a combination of dicamba and tembotrione,
- [00:02:10.710]so a good mixture of two different herbicides,
- [00:02:13.630]and it was again tank mixed with glyphosate,
- [00:02:17.224]so overall excellent weed control in this type of program
- [00:02:20.550]that can provide broad spectrum of weed control activity
- [00:02:23.840]for weed control in corn.
- [00:02:26.180]Corvus Atrazine was applied pre-emergence in this program,
- [00:02:29.870]and it was followed by
- [00:02:31.660]DiFlexx and glyphosate post-emergence.
- [00:02:36.000]And as I said earlier,
- [00:02:37.500]this is a good combination of different herbicide mixtures
- [00:02:42.330]to apply pre-emergence as well as post-emergence
- [00:02:44.810]and it can provide broad spectrum of weed control,
- [00:02:47.820]even if we have glyphosate-resistant waterhemp or marestail,
- [00:02:51.340]the DiFlexx part applied post-emergence
- [00:02:53.740]can also provide good control
- [00:02:56.100]of those glyphosate-resistant broadleaf weeds
- [00:02:59.040]in this herbicide program.
- [00:03:01.410]This is one more good example
- [00:03:02.980]of a good pre-emergence program
- [00:03:05.480]where Anthem Maxx was applied in the tank mixture
- [00:03:08.640]with Atrazine, as well as Callisto,
- [00:03:12.570]at five fluid ounces per acre,
- [00:03:16.050]and it has provided good pre-emergence weed control.
- [00:03:19.830]It is hard to see any weed actually in this field.
- [00:03:22.570]If you will try to find out a weed at all,
- [00:03:25.400]you will not find any weed.
- [00:03:26.820]As well as good crop safety,
- [00:03:29.240]we are not seeing any corn injury in this plot,
- [00:03:32.850]so a good start of foundation,
- [00:03:35.600]and then it was followed up
- [00:03:37.760]with post-emergence application of Status,
- [00:03:42.390]which is again one more dicamba-based herbicide.
- [00:03:45.810]So you are seeing almost last five treatments
- [00:03:49.290]dicamba was applied post-emergence,
- [00:03:51.240]whether it is Status
- [00:03:53.238]or whether it is DiFlexx or DiFlexx DUO,
- [00:03:55.280]all of them have dicamba-based herbicide
- [00:03:58.511]and which is a little bit scary for me,
- [00:03:59.460]because we are also using dicamba-based herbicide
- [00:04:02.730]such as XtendiMax, FeXapan and Engenia or Tavium in soybean,
- [00:04:06.980]and if we will keep using dicamba in corn,
- [00:04:09.970]as well as in soybean,
- [00:04:11.150]then it might not be a good idea
- [00:04:12.930]because it will create more selection pressure
- [00:04:15.850]on weed species, particularly,
- [00:04:17.740]I'm worried about waterhemp and Palmer amaranth
- [00:04:21.200]that can quickly evolve resistance to this herbicide.
- [00:04:24.120]So when you make a herbicide program,
- [00:04:26.370]it is important to think about
- [00:04:28.450]using different herbicide synthetic auxins.
- [00:04:31.320]So for example,
- [00:04:32.694]if you are using dicamba-based herbicide in soybean,
- [00:04:34.570]you don't need to repeat them in corn.
- [00:04:36.990]Although they are great herbicides,
- [00:04:38.710]nothing wrong with them,
- [00:04:39.710]but you have to make a plan,
- [00:04:41.330]at least for three years,
- [00:04:42.950]when you select different herbicides
- [00:04:44.700]based on different synthetic auxins
- [00:04:46.580]and then you can achieve a good level of weed control
- [00:04:49.700]for a long period of time.
- [00:04:52.420]This is only pre-emergence herbicide-based program
- [00:04:55.750]Lexar EZ is a combination of three different herbicides,
- [00:05:00.530]Atrazine, mesotrione and S-metolachlor
- [00:05:03.230]was applied pre-emergence at three quarts per acre rate,
- [00:05:07.890]and it has also provided
- [00:05:09.500]a very good early season foundation for weed control,
- [00:05:13.010]and we didn't apply any post-emergence application here,
- [00:05:16.360]but although weed control is looking great.
- [00:05:18.840]So you don't need to have a post-emergence application
- [00:05:22.340]in each and every field.
- [00:05:23.223]If your field has low level of weed seedbank
- [00:05:27.440]and if you use
- [00:05:28.710]a full rate of pre-emergence herbicide at planting,
- [00:05:31.480]then sometimes you may not need
- [00:05:33.380]any post-emergence herbicide application.
- [00:05:36.062]So scouting field is important,
- [00:05:38.830]don't make a rule for every field,
- [00:05:41.060]but just scout the field
- [00:05:42.420]and then decide whether the field needed
- [00:05:44.670]herbicide application or no.
- [00:05:46.360]And sometimes if you see a lot of weed pressure,
- [00:05:49.100]then you can also consider applying
- [00:05:51.340]post-emergence application
- [00:05:52.570]and you can tank mix with some other herbicide
- [00:05:55.360]that can provide more residual herbicide activity.
- [00:05:58.340]For example, Warrant,
- [00:05:59.360]which can be applied in corn as well as in soybean,
- [00:06:02.810]but you need to choose only in one of them.
- [00:06:05.250]There is one more only pre-emergence herbicide-based program
- [00:06:08.750]where Acuron, which is a combination
- [00:06:11.030]of four different herbicide active ingredients
- [00:06:14.090]was applied at three quarts per acre,
- [00:06:16.810]which is a maximum rate you can use in single application
- [00:06:20.470]was applied pre-emergence,
- [00:06:22.800]and we are seeing a great level of weed control.
- [00:06:24.950]So again as I told before,
- [00:06:27.686]if sometimes if you use full rate
- [00:06:29.659]of a pre-emergence herbicide,
- [00:06:30.550]sometimes you may not need
- [00:06:31.810]any post-emergence herbicide application.
- [00:06:35.160]In this plot, Lumax EZ was applied at 1.5 quarts per acre,
- [00:06:40.290]which is like a half rate of this herbicide,
- [00:06:44.072]and then it was followed by Halex GT,
- [00:06:46.170]which is a combination of a couple of herbicides.
- [00:06:49.670]It also has glyphosate-based active ingredient
- [00:06:53.850]was applied post-emergence,
- [00:06:55.160]so it has also provided a good weed control.
- [00:07:01.410]In this plot we have applied Surestart II,
- [00:07:05.240]which is a combination of three different herbicides
- [00:07:09.050]with different synthetic auxins,
- [00:07:10.840]and it was tank mixed with Atrazine,
- [00:07:13.510]was applied pre-emergence,
- [00:07:14.810]and then it was followed up by Resicore
- [00:07:18.133]at 1.5 quarts per acre as a post-emergence application.
- [00:07:21.300]So Resicore is a herbicide you can apply pre-emergence,
- [00:07:25.231]as well as only post-emergence,
- [00:07:26.610]up to when corn is up to 12 inches tall.
- [00:07:29.650]So only post-application of Resicore
- [00:07:31.600]can also provide good weed control.
- [00:07:34.686]And overall in this herbicide program,
- [00:07:37.550]we have at least four different herbicide synthetic auxins,
- [00:07:42.030]and it has provided a good weed control,
- [00:07:45.250]not only for grasses
- [00:07:46.460]but also for maturity of broadleaf weeds
- [00:07:48.700]that include waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, marestail,
- [00:07:51.870]and this herbicide program can also provide good control
- [00:07:54.720]for glyphosate-resistant weeds
- [00:07:57.086]that we do have in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:08:00.000]In this plot we have applied Keystone NXT
- [00:08:03.910]at two quarts per acre,
- [00:08:05.030]and then it was followed by Rescore and glyphosate,
- [00:08:09.940]and again a good level of weed control.
- [00:08:14.670]So the take home message from this project is,
- [00:08:17.470]we have a number of herbicide programs
- [00:08:19.410]that are available in the marketplace that you can choose,
- [00:08:22.430]depending upon which one you are interested in.
- [00:08:26.786]But although we have six weeds resistant to glyphosate,
- [00:08:30.280]I believe if you start with a good pre-emergence herbicide
- [00:08:33.760]and if you come back with one post-emergence application,
- [00:08:38.150]depending on weed pressure in your field,
- [00:08:40.920]I believe we have herbicides available in corn
- [00:08:44.370]that can provide excellent weed control.
