- [00:00:06.600]Greetings, my name is Chuck Hibberd.
- [00:00:08.380]I'm Dean and Director of Nebraska Extension.
- [00:00:11.130]And it's my job today to welcome you to
- [00:00:14.480]our "2020 Weed Management Field Day."
- [00:00:18.560]Unfortunately, because of COVID-19,
- [00:00:20.700]we're not able to deliver this to you in person.
- [00:00:24.190]But we hope you enjoy and learn from the virtual experience
- [00:00:29.510]that you're going to have today.
- [00:00:31.800]You know, as we think about how critical this information
- [00:00:34.810]is, for all of you,
- [00:00:37.680]there are three things that I think about.
- [00:00:39.690]First of all, you really want to know what products
- [00:00:42.070]or combination of products or application methods
- [00:00:44.680]or whatever actually work.
- [00:00:46.800]And so this is a great way for you to access
- [00:00:49.240]research based information to help make sure that
- [00:00:52.520]these products can be applied
- [00:00:55.460]in ways that really work for you.
- [00:00:57.770]Secondly, we think about environmental protection
- [00:00:59.950]and so using these products correctly,
- [00:01:02.340]following the label,
- [00:01:03.590]you all know is incredibly important,
- [00:01:05.470]so information on that.
- [00:01:07.300]And then thirdly, really critical,
- [00:01:10.320]in this time of really difficult economics,
- [00:01:14.960]that really understanding the cost benefit ratio
- [00:01:18.000]and what is the benefit?
- [00:01:19.750]What is the value that you can derive from these products
- [00:01:24.000]relative to their cost.
- [00:01:25.980]We hope you have an opportunity to learn about
- [00:01:28.250]those three ideas as well as other things that you're
- [00:01:31.193]interested in, questions that you might have,
- [00:01:34.060]at this "2020 Virtual Weed Management Field Day."
- [00:01:38.000]I wish you all the best, take care and be well.
- [00:01:41.940]I'm Amit Jhala,
- [00:01:42.840]Nebraska Extension Weed Management Specialist with UNL.
- [00:01:48.370]I have been conducting weed management field days
- [00:01:50.610]at South Central Ag Lab for last eight years,
- [00:01:53.810]every single year, in the last week of June.
- [00:01:56.740]This year because of COVID-19 situation,
- [00:01:59.460]we are not able to conduct in person,
- [00:02:02.347]"Weed Management Field Day",
- [00:02:03.860]however for Nebraska growers,
- [00:02:05.520]we have decided to provide
- [00:02:07.660]virtual weed management field day.
- [00:02:09.210]So I welcome all of you and thanks for joining us today
- [00:02:12.410]in this "2020 Virtual Weed Management Field Day"
- [00:02:16.900]at South Central Ag Lab.
- [00:02:18.920]The first project I'm going to discuss today
- [00:02:21.230]is to compare different herbicide programmes
- [00:02:25.410]in soybeans.
- [00:02:26.520]So in soybean, there are a number of herbicide programmes
- [00:02:29.250]available from different industry.
- [00:02:32.060]And so the idea of this project was to compare them
- [00:02:34.990]in UNL unbiased research study.
- [00:02:38.620]So, all the industry, they have submitted about
- [00:02:42.240]three to four treatments and we are comparing them here.
- [00:02:45.450]The majority of weed species here that you will see,
- [00:02:48.420]Waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, Velvetleaf
- [00:02:51.640]and Common lambsquaters that we do have
- [00:02:53.800]particularly in this soybean projects.
- [00:02:55.900]So the idea here was to compare
- [00:02:56.936]different herbicide programmes
- [00:02:59.010]and now I will give you some,
- [00:03:02.040]detailed information about some herbicide programmes.
- [00:03:06.684](footsteps receding)
- [00:03:10.340]For example, this is a good programme, Fierce,
- [00:03:15.720]is a premix of two different herbicides, Wheeler and Zidua.
- [00:03:21.525]And, it has been then mixed with XtendiMax
- [00:03:25.530]which is a Dicamba based herbicide.
- [00:03:28.060]So when it says pre, that herbicide
- [00:03:30.740]was applied pre emergence,
- [00:03:32.430]and when it says post, means this herbicide
- [00:03:35.460]was applied post emergence.
- [00:03:37.360]So for example, in this plot, and the signboard
- [00:03:40.180]is in the middle of the plot,
- [00:03:42.040]and we are using backpack sprayers,
- [00:03:43.520]so when you consider this plot,
- [00:03:46.520]it's a 10 by 90 feet long plot,
- [00:03:50.310]particularly in this project.
- [00:03:52.810]And pre emergence herbicides were applied in the first week
- [00:03:57.180]of May on the same day of planting soybean,
- [00:04:00.200]that we planted in first week of May,
- [00:04:02.810]and then post emergence herbicides were applied on June 11.
- [00:04:08.590]For example, in this plot, really very good weed control.
- [00:04:13.030]So far it is hard to see any weed at all.
- [00:04:15.860]And that is because of the pre emergence herbicide
- [00:04:18.310]was applied at planting.
- [00:04:20.820]And especially it has three different mode of action.
- [00:04:24.813]Fierce, which is a combination of two herbicides and it was
- [00:04:28.630]tank mixed with XtendiMax, which is Dicamba based herbicide.
- [00:04:32.530]So it has provided
- [00:04:34.310]very good foundation
- [00:04:36.260]for weed control in the beginning of the season.
- [00:04:39.130]And then post emergence herbicides were applied
- [00:04:41.450]when soybean was at week three to week four growth stage.
- [00:04:46.740]And we are not seeing any weed and this is going to be
- [00:04:50.520]a very good herbicide programme.
- [00:04:53.882](footsteps approaching)
- [00:04:55.640]Similarly, we have some other herbicide programmes.
- [00:05:00.540]For example, here, XtendiMax, which is
- [00:05:05.130]a Dicamba based herbicide, was applied in tank mixed
- [00:05:07.890]with Axiom, which is again a premix of two different
- [00:05:12.310]herbicide, it also has Metribuzin in that
- [00:05:15.900]in terms of Mauler.
- [00:05:18.010]And then post emergence herbicide
- [00:05:19.900]was XtrendiMax and Roundup which is a good combination.
- [00:05:25.910]Plus, we also have included Warrant,
- [00:05:28.600]which is Acetyl-CoA based herbicide, it provides
- [00:05:31.730]residual control of a number
- [00:05:33.580]of small seeded broadleaf, as well as grass weeds.
- [00:05:38.510]So similar to lash treatments,
- [00:05:41.020]this plot is also looking really great.
- [00:05:44.270]You are seeing some of the symptoms which are very typical
- [00:05:48.630]of (uproots weed)
- [00:05:52.480]combination of Dicamba and Glyphosate,
- [00:05:58.160]was applied in a tank mixture,
- [00:06:00.120]in a post emergence application,
- [00:06:02.700]so this Palmer amaranth is kind of almost
- [00:06:07.810]dying and it will not survive.
- [00:06:10.546](footsteps receding)
- [00:06:13.960]And in general, crop safety was great.
- [00:06:16.430]We didn't see any crop injury in this project.
- [00:06:21.280]All these treatments and soybean is Xtend soybean
- [00:06:26.820]which are Dicamba as well as Glyphosate resistant.
- [00:06:31.761](footsteps approaching)
- [00:06:38.600]Some other treatments here for example,
- [00:06:40.580]warrant was tank mixed with Mauler which is
- [00:06:43.330]a Metribuzin based herbicide, was applied pre emergence
- [00:06:46.930]and then post emergence application was again,
- [00:06:50.009]Dicamba was tank mixed with Glyphosate
- [00:06:52.995]and Warrant which is Acetyl-CoA based herbicide.
- [00:06:57.480]So again, if you will see overall,
- [00:06:59.670]it's about five different modes of action
- [00:07:04.300]in this herbicide programme in total if you consider
- [00:07:07.110]pre emergence as well as post emergence programme.
- [00:07:10.676]An excellent weed control, for example,
- [00:07:14.188]this Common lambsquarters
- [00:07:16.025](pulls weed)
- [00:07:18.530]is also complete killing of this Common lambsquater plant.
- [00:07:23.230]When we applied post emergence herbicides,
- [00:07:25.290]it was about six to seven inch tall.
- [00:07:28.580]And now, because of a great combination of Glyphosate
- [00:07:32.090]and Dicamba, this plant is completely dying.
- [00:07:36.316](bird chirping)
- [00:07:38.640]And we didn't see any grass or any other broadleaf weeds
- [00:07:43.200]coming up in this plot.
- [00:07:45.010]So this is also a very good herbicide programme to consider.
- [00:07:49.838](footsteps receding)
- [00:07:54.410]In this treatment, Fierce MTZ, which is a combination
- [00:07:57.940]of three different herbicides,
- [00:08:03.070]Metribuzin it has Fierce as well as Zidua.
- [00:08:07.140]So again it was applied pre emergence, it has provided great
- [00:08:11.430]early season broadleaf weed control as well
- [00:08:13.930]as grass weed control.
- [00:08:15.490]And then the post emergence application was
- [00:08:18.460]Glyphosate, Dicamba and Perpetuo
- [00:08:22.810]was also tank mixed in post emergence
- [00:08:24.960]herbicide programme and again
- [00:08:27.260]very good looking plot.
- [00:08:29.910]There is no any soybean injury and very good
- [00:08:34.040]weed control, particularly for Waterhemp, Palmer amaranth,
- [00:08:38.410]Mare's tail, those type of weed species
- [00:08:42.290]provided excellent control of this programme.
- [00:08:45.449](footsteps receding)
- [00:08:51.010]This is a programme where BroadAxe
- [00:08:56.070]was applied pre emergence in a tank mixture
- [00:08:58.380]with Metribuzin.
- [00:08:59.640]So Metribuzin by itself may not provide
- [00:09:02.960]very great weed control but when it is tank mixed
- [00:09:06.230]with some other herbicides, it has provided
- [00:09:09.860]and improved weed control.
- [00:09:11.730]So Metribuzin nowaday you will find in a number
- [00:09:14.960]of premix, pre emergence herbicides in soybeans.
- [00:09:18.270]so Metribuzin is not a brand new herbicide but now
- [00:09:21.540]in last two to three years,
- [00:09:23.080]we are seeing Metribuzin as a good tank mix partner
- [00:09:26.500]in number of herbicides, for example,
- [00:09:28.550]Fierce MTZ or even Panther MTZ is one more
- [00:09:32.340]Metribuzin based herbicide right now available
- [00:09:35.350]in the market.
- [00:09:36.810]So this programme has also provided excellent weed control
- [00:09:40.360]and we are not seeing any weed at all in this plot.
- [00:09:44.800]And overall, crop safety is great.
- [00:09:47.250]We are not seeing any crop injury in any of the treatment
- [00:09:51.940]that was applied pre emergence or post emergence.
- [00:09:57.280](footsteps approaching)
- [00:10:04.760]In this plot, we have applied Boundary
- [00:10:08.400]which is good pre emergence herbicide.
- [00:10:11.640]And then it was followed by Tavium which is
- [00:10:16.380]a premix of Dicamba and (indistinct)
- [00:10:21.944]means active ingredient in Dual II Magnum herbicide
- [00:10:24.710]was applied post emergence.
- [00:10:27.310]So again, it has four different side of action,
- [00:10:30.850]and a good programme to consider,
- [00:10:33.460]especially applying Dicamba alone might not be
- [00:10:35.970]a good idea so tank mixing Dicamba
- [00:10:37.073]with Dual II Magnum in this Tavium product is better
- [00:10:44.400]than applying Dicamba by itself.
- [00:10:47.440]And again, very good weed control.
- [00:10:50.060]Majority of weeds are either died
- [00:10:52.550]or there is no any new emergence of any broadleaf
- [00:10:56.950]or grass weed species.
- [00:10:58.120]So again, one more very good herbicide programme
- [00:11:01.860]with some multiple side of action included
- [00:11:05.624]in this programme.
- [00:11:06.457](footsteps approaching)
- [00:11:14.610]Some other herbicide programme for example, Prefix,
- [00:11:18.170]which is a pre emergence herbicide was applied
- [00:11:21.040]at two point per acre pre emergence
- [00:11:23.300]and then Tavium and Glyphosate was applied post emergence
- [00:11:29.630]and again, similar to the programme
- [00:11:32.720]that we have seen earlier,
- [00:11:34.525]Boundary, and this is also one of the best
- [00:11:36.840]herbicide programmes
- [00:11:38.920]available in the marketplace that can provide broad spectrum
- [00:11:42.340]of weed control, particularly now in the state of Nebraska,
- [00:11:45.810]we have six weeds that are resistant to Glyphosate.
- [00:11:49.340]That includes Waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, Mare's tail,
- [00:11:52.920]Common ragweed, Giant ragweed, and Kochia.
- [00:11:55.860]So this type of herbicide programmes that has somewhere
- [00:11:58.610]between four to five different side of action
- [00:12:02.160]are kind of highly recommended and that is the recipe
- [00:12:05.060]for management of Glyphosate resistant weeds,
- [00:12:08.340]particularly in soybean.
- [00:12:11.210](footsteps receding)
- [00:12:20.780]This is one more herbicide programme
- [00:12:22.990]from Cultivar Agriscience, Sonic,
- [00:12:26.880]which is a pre emergence herbicide,
- [00:12:29.146](indistinct) based herbicide was applied pre emergence
- [00:12:31.960]in tank mix with EverpreX at one point per acre rate.
- [00:12:35.720]And then post emergence herbicide was FeXapan
- [00:12:38.800]which is similar to XtendiMax.
- [00:12:41.510]So FeXapan is also a Dicamba based herbicide
- [00:12:44.590]with VaporGrip technology.
- [00:12:46.770]A low volatile Dicamba product you can apply in Dicamba
- [00:12:50.130]resistant soybean at least up to the end of June.
- [00:12:56.140]In this plot, we have applied Sonic in tank mix
- [00:12:59.790]with EverpreX,
- [00:13:01.950]this tank mixture was applied pre emergence
- [00:13:04.300]and then it was followed by FeXapan which is similar
- [00:13:08.290]to XtendiMax, VaporGrip technology based,
- [00:13:12.751]Dicamba low volatile product that you can apply
- [00:13:15.540]in Xtend soybean,
- [00:13:16.653]at least up to July 31 of this year
- [00:13:20.580]based on the court ruling of this herbicide.
- [00:13:23.820]And it was tank mixed with Abundit Edge
- [00:13:26.410]which is a Glyphosate based herbicide
- [00:13:28.270]and again excellent weed control in this plot,
- [00:13:31.700]and there is no any crop injury.
- [00:13:34.423](footsteps approaching)
- [00:13:44.380]In this plot, Surveil was tank mixed with Metribuzin
- [00:13:49.260]applied pre emergence and then FeXapan
- [00:13:53.000]and Glyphosate was applied in a tank mixture as
- [00:13:56.520]a post emergence application.
- [00:13:59.810]And again good weed control programme
- [00:14:05.530]in Xtend soybean.
- [00:14:07.915](footsteps approaching)
- [00:14:14.010]in this plot, you are seeing soybean is dying and
- [00:14:16.680]this is just for an example.
- [00:14:18.530]It is very much important to understand for growers
- [00:14:21.750]especially in soybean, like right now,
- [00:14:23.600]we have different traits of soybean is available.
- [00:14:26.940]So you need to understand which type of soybean you have
- [00:14:30.290]purchased and then you need to select
- [00:14:32.010]post emergence herbicides based on that.
- [00:14:34.150]So for example, these are all Xtend soybean,
- [00:14:38.000]means they are resistant to Dicamba.
- [00:14:40.700]But here, this was also Xtend soybean
- [00:14:43.280]but we applied,
- [00:14:46.140]Enlist One which is 2,4-D based products.
- [00:14:49.740]So you need to understand that Xtend soybean is not
- [00:14:53.220]resistant to Enlist One or 2,4-D based products.
- [00:14:56.980]So, this was just for demonstration purpose
- [00:14:59.697]and it is important to understand which trait
- [00:15:02.580]of soybean you are planting and then you need
- [00:15:05.280]to select your post emergence herbicide.
- [00:15:08.600]In all type of soybean you can apply
- [00:15:10.670]any pre emergence herbicides,
- [00:15:12.210]because pre emergence herbicides
- [00:15:13.630]are selective to all the soybean traits,
- [00:15:17.010]whether it is Xtend soybean or Enlist soybean
- [00:15:19.620]or even it is Roundup Ready soybean
- [00:15:21.620]or even it is Conventional soybean.
- [00:15:23.520]You can apply any pre emergence herbicide.
- [00:15:26.040]However, when it comes to post emergence herbicides,
- [00:15:28.680]you need to be selective and you need to know which trait
- [00:15:32.080]of soybean you have planted and then based on that,
- [00:15:34.690]you have to select your post emergence herbicide.
- [00:15:38.080]So now we have applied some treatments in Enlist soybean.
- [00:15:41.980]Enlist soybean is resistant to 2,4-D, Glyphosate
- [00:15:45.797]and Glufosinate.
- [00:15:46.890]Means herbicides like Enlist One or Enlist Duo
- [00:15:50.140]or Roundup or Liberty, all three of them.
- [00:15:52.810]So in this plot, we have applied Sonic in a tank mix
- [00:15:56.960]with EverpreX and then post emergennce herbicide programme
- [00:16:01.720]was Liberty, was tank mixed with Enlist One.
- [00:16:06.840]And again, very good weed control.
- [00:16:09.450]Similar to those Xtend soybean,
- [00:16:12.560]we are not seeing any injury.
- [00:16:14.350]Some of the injury you are seeing is just that combat
- [00:16:17.444]Dicamba injury.
- [00:16:18.420]These are the typical symptoms of
- [00:16:20.900]Dicamba off target injury on Enlist soybean, you will see
- [00:16:24.980]upward lift cupping in this Enlist soybean
- [00:16:28.290]because they are sensitive to Dicamba.
- [00:16:30.340]So this is something needs to be understand like
- [00:16:33.000]Enlist soybean is not resistant to Dicamba
- [00:16:36.400]and Dicamba resistance soy bean is not resistant
- [00:16:39.120]to Enlist One or Enlist Duo type of herbicides.
- [00:16:44.003](footsteps receding)
- [00:16:49.820]In this treatment Panther PRO, which is a premix
- [00:16:52.150]of three different soybean pre emergence herbicide was
- [00:16:56.780]applied pre emergence and then extra Credit Xtreme,
- [00:17:01.150]which is a good combination of two different sort of
- [00:17:04.980]Glyphosate was applied post emergence and it has provided
- [00:17:08.910]really good weed control.
- [00:17:10.620]We are seeing hardly one or two weeds here
- [00:17:13.240]but other than that, excellent programme to consider
- [00:17:17.040]for soybean weed control.
- [00:17:19.742](footsteps approaching)
- [00:17:26.083]Here in this case, Panther MTZ was applied pre emergence,
- [00:17:29.780]which is a combination of three herbicides,
- [00:17:32.820]that also includes Metribuzin.
- [00:17:35.110]So as I discussed earlier now Metribuzin is
- [00:17:38.894]a tank mixture partner in number of pre mixing herbicides
- [00:17:42.027]available in the marketplace, particularly
- [00:17:44.870]for pre emergence weed control in soybean.
- [00:17:47.440]And then Glyphosate was applied post emergence.
- [00:17:51.480]Sometimes you will see volunteer corn in soybean fields,
- [00:17:55.220]for example here (uproots weed)
- [00:17:57.010]and that is something you may need
- [00:17:58.690]to consider because when last year we had corn
- [00:18:01.500]in this ground and then we planted soybeans this year.
- [00:18:05.400]So volunteer corn is easy to control but you have
- [00:18:09.070]to make sure you include some grass are besides in soybean.
- [00:18:13.320]For example, Select Max, SU2, Fusilade,
- [00:18:17.500]those are some good examples of grass killing herbicides
- [00:18:21.320]that are very effective on controlling
- [00:18:22.950]volunteer corn in soybean.
- [00:18:26.464](drops volunteer corn plant)
- [00:18:27.297](footsteps approaching)
- [00:18:30.040]So the take home message from this project is number one,
- [00:18:34.720]When it comes to weed control in soybean, it is important
- [00:18:37.670]to consider a good pre emergence herbicide that
- [00:18:41.180]can provide a good foundation for weed control especially
- [00:18:44.270]when we have at least six weeds, are resistant to glyphosate
- [00:18:49.130]and they are widespread.
- [00:18:50.080]So pre emergence herbicide is a good start
- [00:18:52.140]and then you have to consider post emergence application
- [00:18:55.700]of herbicide depending on which trait
- [00:18:58.890]of soybean you have planted.
- [00:19:00.930]So if you include pre followed by
- [00:19:03.290]post emergence herbicide programme
- [00:19:05.180]and we have here, for example,
- [00:19:06.820]we have discussed at least 14 different herbicide programmes
- [00:19:10.020]that can provide really excellent weed control
- [00:19:13.490]and crop safety.
