- [00:00:23.810]And that's one of the things that I really love,
- [00:00:26.410]that interdisciplinarity,
- [00:00:27.920]that mix of interests and experiences
- [00:00:31.840]makes for such rich, fun, dynamic discussions
- [00:00:36.450]that you kind of only get with that confluence of people.
- [00:00:40.630]And also, some really wonderful work.
- [00:00:43.900]In honors, I get to know students and other faculty
- [00:00:47.310]that I never would have gotten to know otherwise.
- [00:00:49.750]And those connections outside your home area
- [00:00:54.160]make life at the university, to me,
- [00:00:56.610]even richer and more rewarding.
- [00:00:58.773]I've been teaching the honors program
- [00:01:01.750]for about 10 years now.
- [00:01:03.610]And I'd have to say, it's probably the best part of my job.

- [00:01:08.030]Not only are the faculty and staff great to work with,
- [00:01:10.820]but most importantly, the students are awesome.

- [00:01:15.030]as much as I try to push them.
- [00:01:17.220]I think that the honors program is doing
- [00:01:19.570]here at the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:21.060]exactly what we promised the state,
- [00:01:22.700]and that is turning out some of the best and the brightest.
- [00:01:25.450]People graduate from the honors program
- [00:01:27.310]and go on to do absolutely amazing and wonderful things.
- [00:01:30.370]So that's one of the reasons I absolutely love
- [00:01:32.390]being a part of the honors program
- [00:01:33.870]and hope to continue to do so in years ahead.
- [00:01:36.480]I think one of my favorite things
- [00:01:38.300]about teaching in the honors program
- [00:01:41.070]is there's a certain fearlessness to the students
- [00:01:46.930]that I really enjoy.
- [00:01:49.590]Within that, as an instructor, I know that
- [00:01:51.970]I can present these challenges that are kind of crazy
- [00:01:58.600]and ask students to do things that are really
- [00:02:02.970]far beyond what they thought their capabilities have been.
- [00:02:06.800]And inevitably, every time, students have
- [00:02:11.280]sort of risen to the occasion.
- [00:02:13.590]I like every aspect of my job,
- [00:02:16.020]but I particularly like teaching
- [00:02:17.990]in the university honors program.
- [00:02:20.100]I had the good fortune earlier in my career
- [00:02:22.360]to teach at Cornell University for a long time,
- [00:02:25.010]in the Ivy League.
- [00:02:26.520]Teaching at the UNL honors program is a lot like that,
- [00:02:31.090]only perhaps even better.
- [00:02:32.940]What I particularly love is the diversity of students
- [00:02:36.490]and their interests.
- [00:02:37.430]They come from all over the university,
- [00:02:39.160]study all kinds of different topics,
- [00:02:41.060]and blend together in a fascinating way.
- [00:02:44.350]Also, it's really fun.
- [00:02:47.820]Like, please don't tell anyone,
- [00:02:50.070]because then everyone's gonna want to teach in honors,
- [00:02:52.600]and I'm not gonna be able to teach in honors,
- [00:02:55.110]but it is really fun.
