- [00:00:01.181](even-tempo, easy music)
- [00:00:06.480]Hi, I'm Jenny Reese, Nebraska Extension Educator
- [00:00:09.360]and we really miss not seeing you all
- [00:00:12.080]at this year's Palmer Amaranth Field Day.
- [00:00:15.380]But we appreciate technology
- [00:00:17.320]and the ability to do this virtually.
- [00:00:19.130]And so as we think about that time frame,
- [00:00:23.640]all these plots were pretty much put in
- [00:00:25.460]by Dr. Amit Jhala and his technician Irv Schleifer.
- [00:00:29.650]So we really appreciate them
- [00:00:30.950]with all their work on this in the midst of COVID
- [00:00:33.890]as graduate students weren't allowed
- [00:00:35.560]to help during that time frame.
- [00:00:37.960]And Dr. Jhala asked me today to speak a little bit
- [00:00:40.850]about the non-GMO white corn plots here.
- [00:00:45.790]We have several growers throughout the state of Nebraska
- [00:00:48.700]that are planting non-GMO white corn.
- [00:00:51.460]And the reason is just for a better market price
- [00:00:54.350]and the premium that they can receive for it.
- [00:00:57.230]As we think about that being non-GMO,
- [00:00:59.840]we don't have as many post options
- [00:01:01.870]with regards to the use of glyphosate and also Liberty.
- [00:01:05.900]So the point of this project
- [00:01:07.610]is to look at the pre-herbicides,
- [00:01:11.040]look at how well the residual lasts over time.
- [00:01:14.400]These are all going to be taken to yield,
- [00:01:16.550]and so there's only one comparison out here
- [00:01:18.830]where a post was applied.
- [00:01:21.440]As we look at this as well,
- [00:01:23.430]keep in mind these were planted on May 12.
- [00:01:26.390]So a lot of you were already done
- [00:01:28.550]planting your corn and your beans by that timeframe.
- [00:01:31.560]Think about early May.
- [00:01:32.670]It was cool.
- [00:01:33.730]We didn't have much precipitation.
- [00:01:36.230]The pre's were applied on May 14.
- [00:01:39.000]So we didn't have a lot of rainfall in that timeframe.
- [00:01:43.160]During that timeframe
- [00:01:44.180]we were getting a lotta questions
- [00:01:45.560]about activating pre-herbicides.
- [00:01:48.390]A week later was Memorial Day weekend.
- [00:01:50.470]That's when we got a good flush of rain
- [00:01:53.000]for the majority of the state at that time.
- [00:01:55.440]So those are all things to think about, too.
- [00:01:57.160]Every year's a little bit different.
- [00:01:59.270]You can see here, this is the untreated check.
- [00:02:01.650]A lot of fall panicum in these plots, as well as Palmer.
- [00:02:05.170]If you don't know how to tell the difference
- [00:02:06.710]between Palmer and waterhemp,
- [00:02:09.990]remove a petiole from the main stem of the plant.
- [00:02:13.940]And I recommend from the middle to lower portion
- [00:02:16.440]of that canopy.
- [00:02:18.310]And then, where the base of that leaf meets the petiole,
- [00:02:23.300]fold it over.
- [00:02:25.720]And if that petiole is longer than that leaf itself,
- [00:02:29.890]it would be Palmer.
- [00:02:31.670]If it's the same size or shorter,
- [00:02:35.080]it would be waterhemp.
- [00:02:36.480]And so that's the most telltale way
- [00:02:38.350]to tell the difference.
- [00:02:40.870]So this is considered the weed-free plot.
- [00:02:43.880]In this case, we've got Acuron as the pre again.
- [00:02:47.190]It was applied on May 14.
- [00:02:50.420]And then in this case,
- [00:02:51.450]there was a post, DiFlexx and Warrant.
- [00:02:54.010]So group four, group 27,
- [00:02:58.350]and also applied.
- [00:03:00.290]As you look down this plot,
- [00:03:01.480]the only thing that we have going on here
- [00:03:04.020]is some fall panicum that came.
- [00:03:05.760]There's no Palmer that we're seeing.
- [00:03:08.040]Unless they were coming from the outside rows falling in.
- [00:03:12.310]So then with this next pre plot,
- [00:03:14.530]we're comparing just the pre that we had
- [00:03:16.540]in our previous plot.
- [00:03:18.810]2.5 quarts of Acuron.
- [00:03:20.620]And so you can see here
- [00:03:22.740]that we do have quite a bit of Palmer that came through.
- [00:03:25.450]And you're gonna see that in all of these plots
- [00:03:28.450]as you go across here.
- [00:03:29.810]That the importance of needing a post-application
- [00:03:33.060]with residual as well.
- [00:03:34.860]But we do have the comparisons just to show you.
- [00:03:37.790]So this is Acuron 2.5 quarts.
- [00:03:41.290]And you can see the Palmer coming through.
- [00:03:43.500]But not as bad as some others as we go through these.
- [00:03:47.160]In this plot, you can see that Atrazine was applied pre.
- [00:03:50.680]And one thing that you should know about this location
- [00:03:53.710]is that the Palmer at this location
- [00:03:56.120]is Atrazine-resistant, glyphosate-resistant,
- [00:04:00.510]and also ALS-resistant as well.
- [00:04:03.700]So you can see that there's a great deal of Palmer
- [00:04:06.760]in this plot because of that.
- [00:04:09.030]'Kay so, another one of the plots
- [00:04:11.190]is Harness Max, applied at 2.5 quarts pre.
- [00:04:14.630]This one had actually pretty good control
- [00:04:17.400]for being a pre.
- [00:04:18.470]Throughout here you can see some Palmer up front.
- [00:04:21.040]But as you walk through the plot,
- [00:04:22.890]it's pretty clean as you walk through it.
- [00:04:27.610]Resicore is another one that looked pretty good
- [00:04:29.670]walking through the plot overall.
- [00:04:31.450]Again, there's a few up front,
- [00:04:33.660]but as you walk through, there's fewer escapes
- [00:04:37.570]as you go through that plot.
- [00:04:39.755]So tended to hold on pretty good
- [00:04:41.980]for being a pre only and no post option.
- [00:04:45.520]Another one of the plots that looked really good
- [00:04:48.740]in this pre study is Zidua.
- [00:04:50.830]And as you look down here again
- [00:04:52.570]you can see more of the plants
- [00:04:54.740]more along the row in this case,
- [00:04:56.910]versus in the center of the row.
- [00:04:59.370]Andy you can see overall pretty good control for the Zidua.
- [00:05:08.210]So to wrap this up,
- [00:05:09.900]what we saw again in this non-GMO white corn study
- [00:05:13.430]is we were pretty much just looking at
- [00:05:16.090]the effect of those pre's for the residual,
- [00:05:18.760]knowing that they can last anywhere from 30 to 45 days.
- [00:05:21.970]And again, that's all based
- [00:05:23.360]on environmental conditions as well.
- [00:05:25.810]Some of these, as you go through 'em,
- [00:05:27.430]they could be tank-mixed together
- [00:05:28.960]to provide even better control.
- [00:05:31.550]And ultimately what we'd recommend
- [00:05:34.130]is that you have the pre with residual
- [00:05:36.580]followed with a post with residual.
- [00:05:39.710]And again, we're looking at the impacts of these pre's,
- [00:05:43.770]how long they last,
- [00:05:45.570]and any impacts on yield.
- [00:05:49.160]And non-GMO white corn,
- [00:05:50.680]just a reminder again,
- [00:05:51.890]it's non-GMO,
- [00:05:52.750]so we can't use glyphosate and Liberty in these
- [00:05:55.480]because of the traits.
- [00:05:56.940]But we're just showing other options for the pre's
- [00:05:59.750]and how important the pre's are in this case.
