- [00:00:06.680]Hello, my name's Shawn McDonald,
- [00:00:08.090]I'm a master's student here at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:10.390]under the advisement of Amit Jhala.
- [00:00:12.360]Thank you for joining me here today,
- [00:00:13.270]we're at our Carlton Field site.
- [00:00:15.630]Today I'd like to talk to you about our research here
- [00:00:18.950]where we're looking at effective row spacing in corn.
- [00:00:21.850]So in this case right here we have 15
- [00:00:23.740]and we also have 30-inch row spacings.
- [00:00:26.030]And today we'll be looking at the different pre
- [00:00:29.030]as well as post-herbicide programs and its control
- [00:00:31.900]on glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth.
- [00:00:34.330]So here we're looking at (mumbles)
- [00:00:35.640]or untreated checks,
- [00:00:36.570]so this is no herbicide control at all,
- [00:00:38.800]just what the natural repopulation is gonna look like here.
- [00:00:41.170]So you're gonna see a lot of Palmer amaranth,
- [00:00:42.970]especially here in the front as well as in this case,
- [00:00:45.547]this field side has a lot of foxtails.
- [00:00:48.980]So looking here between the 15 and 30,
- [00:00:51.450]looks fairly similar to each other,
- [00:00:53.923]you can see just the problem we have with Palmer amaranth
- [00:00:57.210]as well as with foxtail here.
- [00:00:59.270]So here we're starting off, we have our weed free program.
- [00:01:02.030]So we're taking here with a very good pre,
- [00:01:04.065]on this case Acura on a two and a half courts.
- [00:01:07.090]And then following that up with a post here
- [00:01:08.840]about two weeks ago with Liberty,
- [00:01:10.620]as well as our residual being a warrant
- [00:01:12.410]in this case right here.
- [00:01:13.243]So we're looking for some season-long weed control,
- [00:01:15.890]with that.
- [00:01:16.800]So here's basically,
- [00:01:17.650]what we'd recommend as probably one of the top
- [00:01:19.190]or more of a premier reprogram where you see,
- [00:01:21.970]if you go down and to and look through the plot,
- [00:01:23.140]very clean across the board,
- [00:01:24.570]especially our 30 as well as our 15 in here.
- [00:01:28.380]So great control here for these projects
- [00:01:30.400]or for these treatments.
- [00:01:32.810]So here we're showing a pre only program here.
- [00:01:34.950]So in this case we have TripleFlexx,
- [00:01:37.240]we're looking at three different modes of action there.
- [00:01:38.930]So as you can see we had good weed control up to maybe
- [00:01:41.550]30 days after our pre-application,
- [00:01:43.350]but now we're looking where to start,
- [00:01:45.780]all those pres are starting to break
- [00:01:47.200]and we're getting a lot of Palmer
- [00:01:48.570]starting to emerge through that.
- [00:01:50.280]So not great for season-long weed control.
- [00:01:51.930]This is really where we recommend
- [00:01:53.140]getting into those posts as well as those residual programs
- [00:01:56.490]to further control throughout the threat
- [00:01:57.323]the rest of the season.
- [00:01:59.630]Counter two it was our pre-only application.
- [00:02:02.210]So here we're looking at just an early post,
- [00:02:05.160]where we had a Liberty,
- [00:02:06.030]as well as our residual being warrant here.
- [00:02:08.260]So overall a little bit better control anyways,
- [00:02:11.140]especially with the addition of that warrant
- [00:02:12.960]is gonna control any newly emerging Palmer
- [00:02:15.580]that might come up later in the season.
- [00:02:17.490]So this in case right here is 14 days after post.
- [00:02:19.770]So we're looking at not overall grade,
- [00:02:22.310]there's still a few escapes in there,
- [00:02:23.440]but much better control overall
- [00:02:26.500]as compared to our pre only program.
- [00:02:28.590]So here's a more of a program
- [00:02:30.450]that I would really probably more recommend
- [00:02:32.210]to you in our lab.
- [00:02:35.260]So here we're looking at pre with Corvus with atrazine,
- [00:02:38.050]and then following up with a late post
- [00:02:39.490]seven days after post in this case right here with Liberty.
- [00:02:43.070]And if we look down into the plots overall, fairly clean.
- [00:02:46.350]If you see any Palmer in there,
- [00:02:47.790]it's starting to really see the effect of that Liberty
- [00:02:50.253]or it's starting to burn down
- [00:02:52.690]and hopefully in a few weeks it'll fully die.
- [00:02:56.180]But overall, great program,
- [00:02:58.570]something we'd really recommend here in the Joll lab.
- [00:03:02.140]So here we're looking at Roundup-only programs
- [00:03:05.050]for both an early and a late post.
- [00:03:07.170]So typically (mumbles) thought Roundup
- [00:03:09.260]would just control everything anyways,
- [00:03:11.080]as we're looking here especially with the case of,
- [00:03:12.800]often we see more herbicide resistant weeds,
- [00:03:15.850]in this case glyceride or some Palmer amaranth,
- [00:03:18.350]we can't use that for our own method of control here.
- [00:03:20.450]So overall you're seeing a lot of Palmer starting
- [00:03:22.970]to emerge in both the 30 and our 15 inch row plots.
- [00:03:28.680]So potentially looking
- [00:03:30.510]there are some other alternatives to control any ways,
- [00:03:32.390]different modes of action for herbicides,
- [00:03:34.540]as well as maybe looking at some other methods of control,
- [00:03:36.750]either being cultural
- [00:03:37.583]or maybe other mechanical methods of control
- [00:03:39.400]rather than just like strictly on our chemistry
- [00:03:41.860]in this case being Roundup.
- [00:03:45.360]So looking here too,
- [00:03:46.193]so we're just looking at post options here.
- [00:03:48.000]So we have Liberty for early posts
- [00:03:49.530]as well as DiFlexx Duo for our late posts.
- [00:03:52.330]So we're looking at fairly decent control
- [00:03:54.125]way of a...
- [00:03:54.958]You could feel the weeds here anyways,
- [00:03:56.350]not much Palmer emerging mostly grasses anyways.
- [00:03:59.330]But as you can also see throughout here,
- [00:04:01.650]we had soybeans grown here this past year,
- [00:04:03.500]so there's potentially some femesfin damage
- [00:04:06.260]or some injury here we're seeing.
- [00:04:07.510]So that's why we're seeing a little bit
- [00:04:08.670]of stunting here as compared to a lot of our other plots.
- [00:04:12.080]Okay, so thank you for going through our project
- [00:04:15.200]or our experiment here today.
- [00:04:16.590]So some of the big takeaways
- [00:04:17.680]we wanna take away from a lot of this research anyways,
- [00:04:20.870]we're not necessarily seeing any really difference
- [00:04:22.420]between 30 and 15 inch row spacings as of yet,
- [00:04:25.240]we will report later on season
- [00:04:26.880]to see if there's any big yield effect here.
- [00:04:29.390]But the big takeaway is we wanna have
- [00:04:30.710]especially when we're looking at herbicide resistant weeds
- [00:04:32.830]like this glyphosate resistant Palmer amaranth
- [00:04:35.100]is preaching the use of PREs
- [00:04:38.520]as well as the use of residuals in our herbicide programs.
- [00:04:42.130]As you can see through here,
- [00:04:43.400]adding residuals especially early or post applications,
- [00:04:48.010]can extend the control throughout longer season.
- [00:04:51.150]After a lot of our posts herbicide sake like Liberty,
- [00:04:55.830]seize to work
- [00:04:57.680]as well as maybe potentially looking at
- [00:04:59.040]some other control methods
- [00:05:00.320]like cultural and mechanical and maybe some biological
- [00:05:04.430]or maybe you use the cover crops for added control there
- [00:05:08.090]and several just on chemistries here.
