- [00:00:06.230]I'm Amit Jhala,
- [00:00:07.280]Nebraska Extension Weed Management Specialist.
- [00:00:10.560]I welcome all of you in 2020 virtual
- [00:00:15.520]Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer amaranth Management Field Day.
- [00:00:20.010]We were not able to do it in person,
- [00:00:22.050]but we thought providing all the information virtually
- [00:00:25.640]will be better for corn growers.
- [00:00:30.480]For last three years, we have been conducting
- [00:00:33.120]extensive field days at this site,
- [00:00:35.320]we are near to Colton, Nebraska.
- [00:00:38.260]At this site, we have Palmer amaranth resistant to atrazine,
- [00:00:43.320]glyphosate, as well as ALS group of chemistry.
- [00:00:46.430]Therefore, this Palmer amaranth is more difficult to control
- [00:00:49.340]because it has evolved resistance
- [00:00:51.340]to this three group of herbicides.
- [00:00:54.510]Palmer amaranth is an ideal weed.
- [00:00:57.330]If I'm a weed, I would like to be a Palmer amaranth
- [00:00:59.970]because of a number of weedy characteristics
- [00:01:03.340]that Palmer amaranth has.
- [00:01:06.120]There are a number of weedy characteristics for example,
- [00:01:08.820]it has very long emergence period,
- [00:01:11.900]means Palmer amaranth generally in South Central Nebraska
- [00:01:15.620]will start emerging in May,
- [00:01:18.040]and you will also see some new emergence
- [00:01:20.600]in June, July and even up to the beginning of September.
- [00:01:24.960]We have seen some new Palmer amaranth emergence
- [00:01:27.550]so it can easily escape our pre emergence herbicides
- [00:01:31.030]as well as post emergence herbicide applications.
- [00:01:34.660]One more thing is Palmer amaranth has a very
- [00:01:38.110]high growth rate means compared with any other weed species,
- [00:01:43.110]Palmer amaranth can grow very fast
- [00:01:45.730]and it can provide a lot of competition with crops.
- [00:01:51.200]Additionally, it can also survive
- [00:01:53.160]under water stress conditions.
- [00:01:55.240]Some studies we conducted
- [00:01:57.690]revealed that even with a 25% of pill capacity,
- [00:02:01.900]Palmer amaranth can survive and produce seeds.
- [00:02:04.990]So at this site,
- [00:02:06.460]we have been conducting studies for last four years
- [00:02:10.210]so I remember in 2016, we collected seeds of Palmer amaranth
- [00:02:16.540]from soybean field at this site, this is a growers field.
- [00:02:21.910]We have been working here for last five years,
- [00:02:23.890]so we collected seeds
- [00:02:25.290]and then we conducted greenhouse studies
- [00:02:30.330]to confirm the level of glyphosate resistance
- [00:02:34.210]and we also came to know
- [00:02:35.750]like now this population of Palmer amaranth
- [00:02:38.440]is also resistant to atrazine
- [00:02:40.490]as well as ALS group of chemistries.
- [00:02:43.170]And then for last three years, we have conducted studies
- [00:02:46.770]for management of this resistant Palmer amaranth in soybean,
- [00:02:50.340]and now this year, we are conducting these studies
- [00:02:53.470]for management of this resistant Palmer amaranth in corn.
- [00:02:58.750]Our greenhouse studies confirm that
- [00:03:00.930]the level of resistance is 37 times more than label rate
- [00:03:05.490]means you have to apply 37 times more glyphosate
- [00:03:09.230]to control this Palmer amaranth,
- [00:03:11.290]otherwise it could control with just like
- [00:03:13.610]22 cube ounces per acre rate.
- [00:03:15.870]So that is something not good
- [00:03:17.940]and we have been conducting number of studies
- [00:03:20.590]at this site for management of this resistant weed.
- [00:03:25.590]So, today we are going to show you different four projects.
- [00:03:29.260]One project is about how row spacing
- [00:03:33.980]as well as herbicide programs can affect management
- [00:03:37.440]of this resistant Palmer amaranth in corn.
- [00:03:41.880]One more project we have is how best we can control
- [00:03:44.690]this resistant Palmer amaranth by using early post
- [00:03:48.400]or late post emergence herbicide applications.
- [00:03:51.050]We also have a project
- [00:03:52.300]about controlling this Palmer amaranth in endless corn
- [00:03:56.600]which came to the market last year
- [00:03:58.830]and which herbicide programs you should use
- [00:04:01.030]in endless corn that we are going to demonstrate today.
- [00:04:04.320]As well as we have a project
- [00:04:06.230]about management of this resistant Palmer amaranth
- [00:04:10.560]in non GMO white corn.
- [00:04:13.540]Some growers are growing non GMO white corn
- [00:04:16.950]for better price, so we are going to demonstrate
- [00:04:19.750]how best you can control this resistant Palmer amaranth
- [00:04:23.140]in non GMO white corn because you cannot use
- [00:04:26.000]some post emergence herbicides like glyphosate
- [00:04:28.950]and glufosinate in non GMO white corn.
- [00:04:33.260]I greatly appreciate support from Nebraska Corn Board,
- [00:04:36.700]as well as Bayer CropScience
- [00:04:38.320]to support these studies for three years.
- [00:04:43.030]I also appreciate help of my graduate students
- [00:04:46.470]as well as technician and staff members
- [00:04:49.260]for their help to conduct these studies.
