- [00:00:06.491]Hello, on behalf of the Department of Agronomy
- [00:00:08.727]and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:12.490]I welcome you to the virtual field day
- [00:00:15.810]organized by Dr. Amit Jhala and his team.
- [00:00:22.270]The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
- [00:00:25.680]has been affected as many of us have
- [00:00:30.110]by COVID-19 and the pandemic.
- [00:00:33.300]However, we continue to pursue research,
- [00:00:37.410]teaching, and extension to provide
- [00:00:40.920]results-driven information for our clientele,
- [00:00:44.520]but to provide and train our students
- [00:00:48.520]in Nebraska and beyond.
- [00:00:51.190]So I wanna emphasize that our mission
- [00:00:54.760]continues to do the work that we do
- [00:00:59.310]in plant, soil, and landscape systems.
- [00:01:07.980]If you're not familiar or maybe familiar
- [00:01:10.480]with the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture,
- [00:01:12.700]it has a legacy and reputation of 110 years.
- [00:01:17.230]It is a field with a lot of talented people.
- [00:01:20.860]Faculty, extension educators across the state, staff,
- [00:01:25.940]and over 200 students that are pursuing
- [00:01:30.450]their degree in plants, agronomy, horticulture,
- [00:01:35.410]turf, and landscape design.
- [00:01:38.250]And we also have graduate students
- [00:01:41.010]that provide the key research area
- [00:01:44.840]or are involved in key research areas.
- [00:01:47.350]Some of them are involved in field days today
- [00:01:50.350]or their research is part
- [00:01:52.100]of what you're observing at the field days.
- [00:01:55.290]We are big in terms
- [00:01:59.420]of generating research dollars
- [00:02:02.620]to help us fulfill our mission
- [00:02:05.430]with federal, commodity, and state dollars.
- [00:02:11.710]Our students are pretty involved in co-curricular programs,
- [00:02:16.240]the soil judging, crop judging, weed judging.
- [00:02:19.680]We have agronomy clubs, horticulture clubs,
- [00:02:22.580]and they're all involved both in the regional,
- [00:02:26.470]local, and national competition.
- [00:02:32.530]I do want to focus on what we are all about.
- [00:02:37.240]At the end of the day, agronomy and horticulture,
- [00:02:40.190]with this 110-years legacy is about people
- [00:02:44.690]and how we can build capacity in people
- [00:02:47.980]whether it's in teaching, research, and extension,
- [00:02:50.820]learning from you as you visit the field days
- [00:02:54.210]and sharing your experiences,
- [00:02:56.450]allowing us to do research that are purpose-driven
- [00:02:59.750]from information, and from challenges,
- [00:03:01.900]and from creative ideas that we hear from you.
- [00:03:04.890]And it's about a livelihood
- [00:03:06.710]that's based on agriculture, ranching,
- [00:03:10.680]that is very much relevant for the state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:14.470]Our degree program for agronomy includes Agronomy,
- [00:03:18.670]Horticulture, Turf and Landscape, and Plant Biology.
- [00:03:23.690]Our portfolio in research included plant protection.
- [00:03:27.230]I will talk about that in just a few minutes
- [00:03:29.490]especially in Integrated Weed Management.
- [00:03:33.270]Cropping systems that include soil management, soil health.
- [00:03:37.630]Plant breeding and genetics is one of our largest portfolio.
- [00:03:41.640]Range and forest management which is important
- [00:03:44.159]for the 21 million acre of pasture
- [00:03:47.270]and range land important for Nebraska.
- [00:03:51.400]And then horticulture and specialty crops.
- [00:03:54.280]And all this is driven by the people we serve,
- [00:03:57.260]you, 170 faculty and staff that are...
- [00:04:04.600]Actively engaged in this work,
- [00:04:08.240]and the 300 plus students that are involved
- [00:04:12.910]in the education space of the department.
- [00:04:20.200]I wanna just spend a few minutes and elaborate on this.
- [00:04:25.050]We have an integrated teaching research extension
- [00:04:27.530]in Plant Protection.
- [00:04:28.610]and Integrated Weed Management portfolio
- [00:04:33.040]for teaching, research, and extension include
- [00:04:36.530]Weed Biology and Ecology, Product Evaluation,
- [00:04:40.370]some of which you'll be hearing from that,
- [00:04:43.850]from Amit and his team today.
- [00:04:46.050]Weed Resistance as this is the topic
- [00:04:49.560]of glyphosate-resistant palmer amaranth field management day
- [00:04:54.760]today so that will be a focus of the field tour.
- [00:04:59.300]Other management practices,
- [00:05:01.540]Emerging Weeds and Spray Technology.
- [00:05:05.690]That is a pretty important portfolio
- [00:05:07.990]for the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.
- [00:05:14.990]So I wanna thank you
- [00:05:17.100]for your partnership, for being present,
- [00:05:19.690]and for giving us an opportunity to engage with you.
- [00:05:23.970]Equally important is we wanna hear from you
- [00:05:26.550]about your ideas, your concern,
- [00:05:29.460]and things that you have discovered in your field.
- [00:05:33.640]So this is important conversation as you're navigating
- [00:05:38.370]through the virtual tour
- [00:05:39.590]and communicating back to Amit and his team.
- [00:05:45.460]And I wanna thank the support we receive
- [00:05:48.890]from the Corn Board, as well as Bayer, thank you.
