- [00:00:00.690]It's two times the total number of individuals, so.
- [00:00:03.870]Chad Brassil teaches biology concepts.
- [00:00:07.120]His chalkboard is a piece of glass
- [00:00:09.200]and his classroom is in his basement.
- [00:00:11.910]If I have in front of me this piece of glass.
- [00:00:14.480]The technology is expensive to buy,
- [00:00:16.540]but Brassil put together his own system
- [00:00:18.840]with $100 in supplies, lights he had at home,
- [00:00:22.290]and his iPhone.
- [00:00:23.580]He records short lectures and then.
- [00:00:26.450]I trim it, I hit the mirror button, flips it,
- [00:00:29.440]and then I adjust the brightness just a little bit
- [00:00:31.806]to bring it up so that everything is a little punchier.
- [00:00:34.550]This system allows Brassil
- [00:00:36.110]to connect with his students.
- [00:00:38.530]Hoping to do that with my students,
- [00:00:39.790]to build the relationship so that they see me and my face
- [00:00:42.440]to know that I'm a person and I'm trying
- [00:00:44.430]to connect with them to walk them through this material.
- [00:00:46.960]The Center for Transformative Teaching
- [00:00:48.910]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:50.930]helps instructors reimagine courses using tools
- [00:00:54.310]like Zoom or Canvas.
- [00:00:56.290]But the personal connection
- [00:00:57.820]between teacher and student is vital.
- [00:01:00.440]You know, when they're turning in assignments,
- [00:01:01.980]making sure that you're giving them thoughtful
- [00:01:04.360]and personalized feedback
- [00:01:05.530]that makes them feel like you see them as a human,
- [00:01:09.020]as an individual, and you know, having,
- [00:01:11.970]even if they're digital, having office hours
- [00:01:13.960]where they can see you face-to-face, and talk in real time.
- [00:01:18.430]Students will be back in class in the fall.
- [00:01:21.410]The center is helping instructors provide options
- [00:01:24.300]that include everyone, no matter where they are.
- [00:01:27.750]We're gonna have students that, for whatever reason,
- [00:01:30.100]are not able to be in real time part of the class
- [00:01:33.970]and so, how do we design our materials
- [00:01:36.300]in such a way that they still get the same experience?
- [00:01:39.690]The hope is that, through all the angst and agony
- [00:01:42.530]of adjusting to a COVID world of education,
- [00:01:46.260]we'll be better educators and we'll take those lessons
- [00:01:48.990]that we learned out of this
- [00:01:50.060]and we'll hang onto those good ones
- [00:01:51.470]and then we'll incorporate 'em back
- [00:01:52.860]into our educational courses in a post-COVID world.
