[00:00:14.968]is exploring many factors that may help children achieve
[00:00:17.813]and maintain early learning success.
[00:00:20.520]We know high quality pre-kindergarten
[00:00:22.025]or pre-k programs often provide a boost
[00:00:25.469]to children when they enter school,
[00:00:27.761]but how can we make sure the benefits of pre-k last
[00:00:30.799]through kindergarten and the early elementary grades?
[00:00:34.020]Research shows that skill building is a critical factor
[00:00:36.960]in children's long-term success.
[00:00:38.527]Our teams have identified some best practices
[00:00:41.272]to promote skill building, both in the classroom
[00:00:44.341]and at the policy level.
[00:00:47.700]In the classroom,
[00:00:48.760]it's important to teach
[00:00:49.740]and support a range of skills in pre-k,
[00:00:51.937]including basic and more complex skills.
[00:00:56.713]Basic, or constrained skills,
[00:00:59.710]include things like learning numbers,
[00:01:01.720]counting, letters, and letter sounds.
[00:01:06.610]More complex, or unconstrained skills,
[00:01:09.153]include things like oral language,
[00:01:11.780]vocabulary, comprehension, composition,
[00:01:15.690]critical thinking, and problem-solving.
[00:01:20.010]In terms of policy making,
[00:01:21.371]we can develop structures and reinforce practices
[00:01:24.396]that strengthen alignment between pre-k
[00:01:27.060]and the early elementary grades.

[00:01:33.164]instruction, standards, assessments,
[00:01:37.198]professional development, and communication.
