- [00:00:02.120]There's a phenomenon known today
- [00:00:03.590]as the school-to-prison pipeline.
- [00:00:05.650]Right now we don't have a good system to help youth
- [00:00:10.030]who get into trouble keep from getting into the same trouble
- [00:00:13.780]over and over again,
- [00:00:14.870]ultimately leading a youth to become an adult offender.
- [00:00:18.489](cell door closing)
- [00:00:20.434]So the question that we're looking at
- [00:00:21.940]is first offending youth in the state of Nebraska
- [00:00:25.140]and what we're trying to do
- [00:00:26.850]is we're trying to form a process
- [00:00:30.470]that will solve the problem,
- [00:00:32.550]not only the problem based on the offense
- [00:00:34.650]that the youth committed
- [00:00:35.550]but also solve a bigger societal problem,
- [00:00:38.350]reintegrate the youth into society
- [00:00:40.900]so that we can avoid recidivism
- [00:00:43.520]and ultimately stop the school-to-prison pipeline.
- [00:00:47.960]I'm currently researching
- [00:00:49.360]the use of restorative justice practices
- [00:00:51.770]with youth offenders in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:00:54.930]Restorative justice looks at taking the person
- [00:00:57.550]who committed the harm, the person who was harmed,
- [00:01:00.440]and having them talk about what happened,
- [00:01:02.490]how it affected them,
- [00:01:03.730]and how we can make the situation better.
- [00:01:06.302](suspenseful music)
- [00:01:15.780]The program that we have in Nebraska is a statewide program
- [00:01:19.680]which is highly unusual across the country.
- [00:01:21.690]Most restorative justice programs
- [00:01:23.610]are very locality-based, city-based.
- [00:01:26.300]We are working as a state
- [00:01:28.070]in order to implement restorative practices
- [00:01:30.760]involving youth throughout the country.
- [00:01:32.906](suspenseful music)
- [00:01:44.310]When I was in high school I had tried unsuccessfully
- [00:01:47.460]to create a peer mediation program in my own high school
- [00:01:50.790]and now I have the opportunity to be involved in
- [00:01:55.000]and to research these very types of programs
- [00:01:58.640]that are actually up and running today.
- [00:02:00.970]Nebraska Law's a great place to do research
- [00:02:03.080]because we're allowed to follow our passion
- [00:02:05.100]and research on the things that we find important
- [00:02:07.250]and really interesting.
- [00:02:08.511](suspenseful music)
