- [00:00:00.970]Hi everybody, my name is Kristen
- [00:00:02.820]and I'm one of the career coaches
- [00:00:03.860]in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:00:05.890]In our previous video, we talked about steps
- [00:00:07.880]you can take in your first year
- [00:00:09.430]and how career coaches can help you.
- [00:00:11.460]In this video, we'll talk about
- [00:00:12.740]the value of your education and getting started
- [00:00:15.020]exploring your interests and career opportunities.
- [00:00:18.790]A major in the College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:00:20.550]is an excellent choice.
- [00:00:22.020]Your degree and majors will provide
- [00:00:23.490]a broad, well-rounded education
- [00:00:25.301]and prepare you think critically,
- [00:00:27.450]collaborate with others, and work towards
- [00:00:29.480]solving complex, real world problems.
- [00:00:31.700]These are some of the skills employers value
- [00:00:34.050]and the ones needed to address the challenges
- [00:00:36.110]our community and world face.
- [00:00:38.850]As you get closer to starting at Nebraska,
- [00:00:41.240]many people have probably already asked you
- [00:00:43.317]"what are you gonna do with your major?"
- [00:00:45.280]Sometimes students have a plan in mind
- [00:00:46.970]and sometimes this kind of question can cause anxiety.
- [00:00:50.270]We're in a changing and dynamic world
- [00:00:52.540]and new jobs are emerging every year.
- [00:00:55.380]In five, 10, or 15 years there will be jobs
- [00:00:58.000]we haven't even heard of yet.
- [00:00:59.820]With a major in the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:01:02.150]you'll have essential skills
- [00:01:03.470]and the flexibility to adapt to the changes
- [00:01:05.730]that time and technology bring.
- [00:01:08.580]We regularly hear from successful alumni
- [00:01:10.910]that they could not have predicted
- [00:01:12.410]that they would end up where they are now
- [00:01:14.130]when they were undergraduates.
- [00:01:16.010]They described their career paths
- [00:01:17.310]that evolved over time based on
- [00:01:19.100]the choices they made, skills they acquired,
- [00:01:21.440]and people who influenced them along the way.
- [00:01:23.800]Here's just one example.
- [00:01:27.440]My name is Mariely, I graduated from UNL in 2019.
- [00:01:30.840]I graduated with majors in psychology
- [00:01:32.500]ethnic studies, and Spanish
- [00:01:33.790]and minors in women's and gender studies,
- [00:01:37.320]Latin American studies, and English.
- [00:01:40.200]I currently work for
- [00:01:41.033]The Boys Town National Research Hospital
- [00:01:42.440]for the clinical neuroscience lab.
- [00:01:45.250]I little about me, I am an immigrant.
- [00:01:47.310]I am a first gen and I grew up in a very small town,
- [00:01:52.670]therefore college was a big deal
- [00:01:54.720]and I wanted to take advantage
- [00:01:55.840]of all the things that were there for me
- [00:01:57.700]and I feel like I did.
- [00:02:00.500]I came to college as a Melvin Jones scholar,
- [00:02:02.930]which is a learning community.
- [00:02:05.380]This community introduced me
- [00:02:06.900]to many other organizations on campus,
- [00:02:11.890]which I started joining.
- [00:02:13.150]I joined MASA, Mexican American Students Association,
- [00:02:15.430]Define American, Sigma Psi Zeta just to name a few.
- [00:02:20.220]I was also introduced to TA,
- [00:02:22.920]the role of TA for Psychology 100
- [00:02:25.970]which I immediately applied to
- [00:02:27.273]as soon as applications became available.
- [00:02:30.060]I was a TA since my sophomore year
- [00:02:32.400]all the way til I graduated.
- [00:02:35.250]I was also a TA for Psych 310,
- [00:02:37.850]Psychology of Immigration, one full semester.
- [00:02:40.910]Besides that I was very involved in research.
- [00:02:43.740]I joined too many labs.
- [00:02:46.320]First thing I did when I came to college
- [00:02:47.760]was look for a lab to join.
- [00:02:50.393]I always knew that I wanted to get a Ph.D.,
- [00:02:52.920]I just had no idea on what or what area.
- [00:02:56.420]I was looking into, I had some ideas but I wasn't sure.
- [00:03:00.390]Therefore, I joined a couple labs
- [00:03:03.060]and I want to say all of those experiences together,
- [00:03:06.306]all the organizations, the labs,
- [00:03:09.240]and the TA roles were able to
- [00:03:12.740]show me a way to figure out
- [00:03:15.350]what I wanted to do with my career.
- [00:03:19.070]I was able to figure out a way
- [00:03:20.520]to mix all my majors, minors, organizations, interests
- [00:03:23.520]into one single career and one research interest
- [00:03:26.980]that I actually liked.
- [00:03:31.150]Besides all of that, I was also able to go abroad.
- [00:03:37.520]I went to Brazil my sophomore year,
- [00:03:40.750]the summer of my sophomore year,
- [00:03:42.400]and I was able to do that for free.
- [00:03:45.270]I got scholarships thanks to the people
- [00:03:47.850]that I met through all those clubs, organizations.
- [00:03:52.240]They were able to write recommendation letters
- [00:03:54.250]for me and I was able to go for free.
- [00:03:59.240]I also had a paid internship
- [00:04:01.810]which was everything that I wanted to do,
- [00:04:05.170]like I said, I figured out what I wanted to do
- [00:04:07.300]through all of those organizations,
- [00:04:10.010]those clubs, research labs.
- [00:04:12.080]I was able to figure out a way to
- [00:04:15.320]land this internship that I got
- [00:04:17.990]through the ethics studies department
- [00:04:19.430]as well as my UCARE.
- [00:04:21.230]I was able to mix all my interests
- [00:04:23.410]and just do what I really wanted to do
- [00:04:26.520]and I will say this has made me
- [00:04:29.600]a very strong candidate for graduate school
- [00:04:33.290]and it made my college experience very enjoyable.
- [00:04:36.210]I learned a lot but I also met a lot of people
- [00:04:40.130]and made connections and I will certainly
- [00:04:44.640]recommend to anyone, the first thing you need to do
- [00:04:50.700]is to find a club or an organization,
- [00:04:53.400]something that makes you happy.
- [00:04:55.410]That way you will figure out
- [00:04:57.130]what you really want to do in the future
- [00:05:00.130]but also meet a lot of cool people,
- [00:05:02.340]make connections, and just enjoy college.
- [00:05:08.750]What I like about Mariely's story
- [00:05:10.470]is that she didn't limit herself
- [00:05:11.750]to one or two opportunities to gain experience,
- [00:05:14.430]but utilized the variety of ways
- [00:05:15.800]to work on her academic and professional goals.
- [00:05:18.760]She made great connections through campus involvement
- [00:05:21.460]and research that led her to traveling abroad
- [00:05:23.980]and completing an internship
- [00:05:25.300]related to her career aspirations.
- [00:05:27.630]As career coaches, we are here to help you
- [00:05:29.430]identify next steps so that you too
- [00:05:31.530]can start on your own career path.
- [00:05:33.520]Even if you don't know what you want to do,
- [00:05:35.390]we'll help you focus on what you do know
- [00:05:37.120]and explore your interests through new opportunities.
- [00:05:39.790]Maybe you love to write
- [00:05:41.160]or maybe you're passionate about the environment
- [00:05:43.620]or maybe you want to work with children.
- [00:05:45.290]There are ways to focus on those things
- [00:05:46.950]and see where they lead and that's where we come in.
- [00:05:49.690]If you want to get started on
- [00:05:51.910]some of those conversations this summer,
