- [00:00:00.480]Hello and congratulations
- [00:00:02.040]on enrolling in your first semester of classes
- [00:00:03.980]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:06.070]We're all looking forward to having you join us this fall.
- [00:00:08.530]My name is Meagan Savage and I am one of the career coaches
- [00:00:11.430]in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:00:14.030]As career coaches, we support you
- [00:00:15.890]during your entire student experience.
- [00:00:18.140]We know there's a lot to think about as an incoming student,
- [00:00:20.800]and you might be wondering what you can do with your major,
- [00:00:23.440]how to get an on-campus job, or ways to gain experience.
- [00:00:27.050]We are happy to talk through all of these questions
- [00:00:29.430]and connect you to our valuable resources
- [00:00:31.750]like the online job and internship platform, Handshake.
- [00:00:35.720]By now you have connected with your academic advisor
- [00:00:38.120]and learned about your major and degree requirements.
- [00:00:40.740]Performing well academically
- [00:00:42.040]is important to your overall success,
- [00:00:43.750]but it's also important that you engage
- [00:00:45.780]in a variety of practical hands-on experiences
- [00:00:49.020]like internships, jobs, undergraduate research,
- [00:00:52.130]education abroad, community service, and campus leadership.
- [00:00:55.920]It's a combination of your academics and experience
- [00:00:58.750]that lead to exciting opportunities after you graduate,
- [00:01:01.600]so think about this as your formula for success:
- [00:01:04.060]academics plus experience equals opportunities.
- [00:01:07.690]Here's what a few of our students had to say
- [00:01:09.470]about their different experiences.
- [00:01:13.330]I'm Carley, a 2020 graduate.
- [00:01:15.580]I majored in sociology
- [00:01:18.010]with minors in human rights, humanitarian affairs,
- [00:01:21.530]ethnic studies, and global studies.
- [00:01:24.470]One group that I was involved with on campus
- [00:01:27.170]was the Arts and Sciences Ambassadors.
- [00:01:29.960]With this group, I was able to help with recruiting events
- [00:01:33.330]and talk with prospective students
- [00:01:34.870]about what UNL has to offer them.
- [00:01:37.920]I was also introduced to other students on campus
- [00:01:41.380]and was given the opportunity
- [00:01:42.930]to volunteer within the community.
- [00:01:45.230]Not only did I enjoy being an ambassador,
- [00:01:47.550]but I realized that I might have a future
- [00:01:49.240]within recruitment.
- [00:01:51.690]Hello everyone, my name is Jake Althouse.
- [00:01:53.430]I'm a rising senior from Los Angeles, California
- [00:01:55.870]and my majors are history and political science
- [00:01:57.710]with minors in French, global studies,
- [00:01:59.550]and national security studies.
- [00:02:01.100]I'm here today just to tell you a little bit
- [00:02:02.600]about my study abroad experience.
- [00:02:04.360]So I did a faculty-led program through the university
- [00:02:06.970]in Krakow, Poland last summer.
- [00:02:09.810]And personally, it was a tremendous experience
- [00:02:12.250]on two different levels.
- [00:02:13.240]On a more personal level, it was great to experience
- [00:02:15.320]a new culture, travel new parts of the world,
- [00:02:18.060]and meet a lot of the close friends
- [00:02:19.680]that I have today on that trip.
- [00:02:21.330]And secondly, from a career perspective,
- [00:02:23.820]it really expanded my personal interest
- [00:02:26.230]in international relations and global studies
- [00:02:28.230]and helped me develop what I want in a career,
- [00:02:30.720]which is eventually to work in foreign policy
- [00:02:32.930]on the government level.
- [00:02:34.260]And it has really helped me stand out to employers
- [00:02:36.760]on my resume having that study abroad experience.
- [00:02:38.830]So I would heavily encourage all of you
- [00:02:40.180]to explore any options for study abroad
- [00:02:42.560]because it truly is a great opportunity
- [00:02:43.900]offered by the university, thank you.
- [00:02:47.010]Hi, my name is Saisha Adhikari
- [00:02:48.110]and I'm a senior adult majoring in biology and psychology.
- [00:02:51.470]Research is something I have been involved with
- [00:02:53.340]since my freshman year.
- [00:02:54.480]I have been in three labs
- [00:02:55.850]and have gained really meaningful experiences
- [00:02:57.720]from each and every single one of them.
- [00:02:59.460]My first research lab
- [00:03:01.480]I got involved in before my freshman year,
- [00:03:03.750]so I think the summer before college
- [00:03:05.360]is very pivotal to get ahead.
- [00:03:07.440]And I just went on UNL psych department
- [00:03:10.520]and searched the research labs
- [00:03:11.880]and contacted a bunch of professors
- [00:03:13.950]whom did have research in topics that I was interested in.
- [00:03:17.470]Thankfully, one got back to me and said
- [00:03:19.180]that she would let me shadow the lab
- [00:03:20.840]and see what it's like as a freshman.
- [00:03:22.810]So I was in cognitive and affective neuroscience
- [00:03:26.000]and it was really cool to get that hands-on experience
- [00:03:29.220]as a freshman already.
- [00:03:31.300]I found out though that was not my greatest area.
- [00:03:34.220]I wanted more people interaction,
- [00:03:35.680]so then she referred me to another lab
- [00:03:37.890]and I've been at it ever since.
- [00:03:39.390]It's called child maltreatment lab
- [00:03:40.760]and I get both the research lab aspect
- [00:03:42.540]but also outreach with the community and children.
- [00:03:45.810]I think research is definitely the future of our world.
- [00:03:48.920]It is so important and especially as a psych major
- [00:03:51.710]or any major you are you can get involved right away.
- [00:03:54.170]These are just some examples
- [00:03:55.670]of the interesting, creative,
- [00:03:57.010]and exciting things our students are doing.
- [00:03:59.170]Gaining a variety of experience is valuable
- [00:04:01.680]because it will help you develop
- [00:04:03.060]and apply new skills we know employers
- [00:04:05.310]and graduate schools are looking for.
- [00:04:07.140]You will also better understand
- [00:04:08.650]what you do and don't like
- [00:04:10.200]so you can set clearer career goals for yourself.
- [00:04:13.560]As we get closer to fall,
- [00:04:15.000]we encourage you to start exploring
- [00:04:16.430]what the university has to offer
- [00:04:18.100]by looking at the student involvement website
- [00:04:20.070]to find a couple of student groups
- [00:04:21.650]that connect with your academic,
- [00:04:23.360]professional, and personal interests.
- [00:04:25.530]Student groups are the best way
- [00:04:27.050]to make the campus feel smaller,
- [00:04:28.700]make friends and connections, and grow as a leader.
- [00:04:31.710]Or consider volunteering in the community to help others.
- [00:04:34.730]You can find opportunities on the GivePulse platform.
- [00:04:38.350]Don't forget, you don't have to figure out
- [00:04:40.240]all of this on your own.
- [00:04:41.640]As career coaches, we're eager to connect with you
- [00:04:44.000]and get the conversation started.
- [00:04:45.820]To set yourself up for success,
- [00:04:47.370]we encourage taking these steps your first year:
- [00:04:50.440]update or create a resume
- [00:04:51.770]and have it reviewed by a career coach,
- [00:04:54.530]activate your Handshake account
- [00:04:55.920]to find part-time on-campus jobs and/or internships,
- [00:04:59.940]and create a LinkedIn profile to connect
- [00:05:01.960]with students, alumni, faculty, and professionals.
- [00:05:05.220]We're here to help you with all of this and more
- [00:05:07.220]and are happy to meet with you virtually this summer.
- [00:05:09.660]Just reach out to us at cascareers@unl.edu to get in touch.
- [00:05:14.080]We look forward to working with you
