- [00:00:10.430]UNL Animal Science Department Head Clint Krehbiel
- [00:00:13.880]joins us for a further look at the Pork Cares Program.
- [00:00:17.440]And thanks for taking the time to chat with us today, Clint.
- [00:00:19.810]We appreciate your time.
- [00:00:21.240]Give us a little bit of a background on this program
- [00:00:23.430]and how it got started.
- [00:00:24.710]Thank you, Janet. It's great to be here.
- [00:00:26.970]Pork Cares really started with a producer named Bill Luckey.
- [00:00:30.710]He's from Columbus, NE
- [00:00:32.430]and he's also a graduate of the Department of Animal Science
- [00:00:35.140]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:37.560]Bill knew what he and other producers
- [00:00:39.380]were facing with Covid-19
- [00:00:41.190]and the shutdown of swine processing facilities.
- [00:00:45.630]He also knew that there were many consumers
- [00:00:48.650]throughout the state of Nebraska
- [00:00:50.220]and other places obviously that were food insecure
- [00:00:54.710]and so instead of thinking about euthanizing pigs
- [00:00:59.030]Bill is really interested in thinking about
- [00:01:01.230]how we can come together to meet needs
- [00:01:04.450]that those that have protein shortages
- [00:01:08.870]might be able to get ahold of this product
- [00:01:11.130]and that's where we came in to play.
- [00:01:14.210]So tell us a little bit more about the program.
- [00:01:17.040]What kind of impact is it having?
- [00:01:19.150]Well, it really got continued here with
- [00:01:22.630]Bill's reaching out to our Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor
- [00:01:26.360]and then Vice-Chancellor Boehm reaching out to me
- [00:01:29.230]and ironically we had been having discussions Janet
- [00:01:32.680]among ourselves about how we could slowly reopen
- [00:01:36.500]our Loeffel Meat Lab that had been closed down
- [00:01:40.060]due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
- [00:01:42.530]And again provide product to our customers and consumers.
- [00:01:46.990]And it also had some preliminary conversations
- [00:01:49.620]with the Lincoln Food Bank to see how we
- [00:01:52.370]might provide product for them.
- [00:01:54.580]So really it was a conversation that came together
- [00:01:57.290]in a very short amount of time.
- [00:01:59.790]And in two weeks of Bill and myself
- [00:02:04.590]and the Food Bank coming together,
- [00:02:07.420]we were slaughtering the first round of pigs.
- [00:02:10.540]So is there a way for the public to get involved and
- [00:02:13.200]maybe help out with the program even?
- [00:02:16.560]Yeah you bet.
- [00:02:17.470]So Nebraska Pork Producers Association
- [00:02:20.870]has a website N-E-P-O-R-K.ORG
- [00:02:25.460]It costs us about $180 - $200 per animal
- [00:02:29.070]for the processing fees
- [00:02:30.910]and there is a way there to donate
- [00:02:33.160]to help us cover those costs.
- [00:02:35.480]All right. Well thank you very much
- [00:02:36.620]for sharing this story with us, we appreciate it.
- [00:02:38.550]Head of the University Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:40.100]Animal Science Department, Clint Krehbiel
- [00:02:42.370]joining us of course on location.
