- [00:00:09.820]Hi every one, it's a beautiful day today.
- [00:00:12.170]Today I'm going to be reading you a story called,
- [00:00:14.317]"The Little Red Fort."
- [00:00:16.470]Are you ready to join me?
- [00:00:18.720]Here we go, "The Little Red Fort" by Brenda Maier
- [00:00:23.600]and pictures by Sonia Sanchez.
- [00:00:28.657]"The Little Red Fort."
- [00:00:34.110]Ruby's mind was always full of ideas,
- [00:00:38.410]what about you, do you always have ideas too?
- [00:00:43.330]I bet so.
- [00:00:46.910]One day she found some old boards,
- [00:00:50.387]"who wants to help me build something?"
- [00:00:52.610]She asked her brothers.
- [00:00:59.405]I wonder what she's gonna do?
- [00:01:03.800]Oscar Lee pretended not to hear her,
- [00:01:06.460]Rodrigo gave her a look that could melt popsicles,
- [00:01:10.190]Jose almost fell off the fence.
- [00:01:12.737]"You don't know how to build anything." They said.
- [00:01:17.300]But Ruby shrugged.
- [00:01:19.617]"Then I'll learn." She said.
- [00:01:27.960]And she did.
- [00:01:33.400]Well, she's being so creative.
- [00:01:37.120]She's gonna ask a question,
- [00:01:39.407]"who wants to help me draw the plans?"
- [00:01:43.200]The boys clutched their sides and howled with laughter,
- [00:01:46.717]"hahaha! Not me." Said Oscar Lee.
- [00:01:51.177]"I don't think so." Said Rodrigo.
- [00:01:54.067]"No way." Said Jose, "I'm too busy."
- [00:01:59.107]"Fine." Said Ruby, "then I'll draw them myself."
- [00:02:06.340]They are not helping her at all are they?
- [00:02:10.510]And she did.
- [00:02:13.760]Check her out.
- [00:02:17.870]She has a big workspace, looks like she is making it red.
- [00:02:22.500]She is drawing her sketch red.
- [00:02:27.530]Satisfied with her plans Ruby asked,
- [00:02:30.017]"Who wants to help me gather the supplies?"
- [00:02:33.657]"Not me." Said Oscar Lee.
- [00:02:35.817]"I don't think so." Said Rodrigo.
- [00:02:38.437]"No way." Said Jose, "I'm too busy."
- [00:02:43.097]"Fine." Said Ruby, " then I'll gather them myself."
- [00:02:54.210]You can say it with me, and she did.
- [00:03:01.980]Looks like she has a little bit of help from maybe her mom.
- [00:03:08.800]When all the supplies were gathered, Ruby asks,
- [00:03:12.187]"Who wants to help me cut the boards?"
- [00:03:15.337]"Not me." Said Oscar Lee.
- [00:03:17.830]"I don't think so." Said Rodrigo.
- [00:03:20.237]"No way." Said Jose, "I'm too busy."
- [00:03:25.090]Remember what she says?
- [00:03:27.450]She says, "fine, I'll cut them myself."
- [00:03:36.710]Men she's seen all the hard work, isn't she?
- [00:03:40.340]And so she did.
- [00:03:49.580]When all the boards were neatly cut, Ruby sang,
- [00:03:53.167]"Who wants to help me hammer in the nails?"
- [00:03:57.189]Do you think they're gonna help this time?
- [00:04:00.217]"Not me." Said Oscar Lee.
- [00:04:02.737]"I don't think so." Said Rodrigo.
- [00:04:05.267]"No way." Said Jose, "I'm too busy."
- [00:04:10.307]"Fine." She said, "I'll hammer them myself."
- [00:04:16.890]She's still doing all the work still.
- [00:04:20.150]Oh, but she has some helpers, they're helping her.
- [00:04:30.790]Soon, Ruby's creation was complete.
- [00:04:33.587]"Who wants to come play in my fort?" She called.
- [00:04:36.957]"Me, me." Said Oscar Lee.
- [00:04:39.517]"Let's go." Said Rodrigo.
- [00:04:42.157]"I'll play." Said Jose, "I'm not busy anymore."
- [00:04:52.670]She did all the work,
- [00:04:54.340]and now they want to join her in her fort.
- [00:04:58.157]"Not so fast." Ruby said,
- [00:05:00.227]"you didn't help me draw the plans or gather the supplies
- [00:05:04.637]"or cut the boards or hammer the nails,
- [00:05:07.347]"you said I didn't know how to build
- [00:05:09.727]"and you laughed at me,
- [00:05:11.987]"I'm gonna play in the fort by myself."
- [00:05:21.480]She's very proud of herself isn't she?
- [00:05:26.510]And so she did.
- [00:05:29.840]Look at all that stuff in there.
- [00:05:35.497]"We didn't wanna play anyway."
- [00:05:37.330]The boys said, but they did.
- [00:05:41.370]So, they huddled, whispered and got straight to work.
- [00:05:45.020]Oscar lee made a mailbox, Rodrigo planted flowers,
- [00:05:49.400]Jose painted the fort fire-engine red.
- [00:05:53.850]Ruby was delighted, she was so happy.
- [00:06:04.060]That evening, the boys followed a delicious aroma or smell
- [00:06:08.920]to a fort-warming party.
- [00:06:11.747]"Who wants to help me clean this plate?" Ruby asked.
- [00:06:15.197]"We do." The boys said.
- [00:06:18.083]Oh, they're trying to help her now
- [00:06:21.260]'cause they wanna play inside.
- [00:06:28.060]And they did.
- [00:06:36.730]This is my favorite page of the whole book
- [00:06:38.700]because guess what?
- [00:06:40.800]It shows you how to build all different kinds of forts.
- [00:06:44.960]Look at this, there's a sofa fort,
- [00:06:48.560]there's a snow fort, cool.
- [00:06:52.660]There's a kitchen-chair fort
- [00:06:55.080]and there's also a bunk-bed fort.
- [00:06:58.110]So after reading this story,
- [00:07:00.020]it really inspired me to make my own fort.
- [00:07:04.050]So, just like Ruby,
- [00:07:06.360]I grabbed a piece of paper and some makers
- [00:07:09.830]to draw my plan first.
- [00:07:11.870]Then I also gathered some blankets here,
- [00:07:18.000]I have my husker blanket and I also have a blue blanket,
- [00:07:21.070]I have some more too.
- [00:07:22.580]So I think I'm gonna use my couch cushions
- [00:07:25.030]like these ones here and the ones that I'm sitting on
- [00:07:30.170]to help me build my fort.
- [00:07:33.050]So here's my sketch, I made one just like Ruby did.
- [00:07:36.630]So I made it the same shape as my fort,
- [00:07:39.610]and I also used blankets on top,
- [00:07:41.900]so that's what those different colors are for.
- [00:07:44.550]And now, are you ready to see my fort?
- [00:07:48.360]Here it is, I used all different kinds of blankets here,
- [00:07:53.780]I used my couch cushions.
- [00:07:57.480]Let's see what happens when we look inside.
- [00:08:03.630]Wow, it's so dark in there,
- [00:08:06.250]I made this couch cushion to be kind of like a door,
- [00:08:09.540]so that I can get in it.
- [00:08:11.800]It's really dark in there still,
- [00:08:14.670]I'm gonna have to maybe bring a light in.
- [00:08:19.230]I encourage you to build a fort, just like Ruby.
- [00:08:22.240]You can use all kinds of materials,
- [00:08:23.700]you can build inside or outside, do whatever makes you happy
- [00:08:27.500]and remember, to always help if someone asks.
- [00:08:31.700]Have a beautiful day.
