Description
Science experiments enhance a child's predictive skills as well as their understanding of the scientific process. The scientific process involves asking a question, conducting the experiment, observing changes, and recording notes and drawings of the experiment. This experiment requires few materials, and some patience!

- [00:00:11.100]Hi everyone!
- [00:00:11.933]It's a beautiful day today.
- [00:00:13.110]Today I'm going to be showing you
- [00:00:14.560]an experiment called Apple Science.
- [00:00:17.180]Are you ready to try it?
- [00:00:19.490]For Apple Science, you'll need an apple, an apple cutter.
- [00:00:23.660]So I have my cutter and my knife here.
- [00:00:26.530]Then you'll need some ingredients for us to experiment with.
- [00:00:30.050]So first I have tonic water, cranberry juice,
- [00:00:34.110]soda and I'm also gonna use water.
- [00:00:37.360]So then I have these four jars right here
- [00:00:40.260]that I'm gonna full 'em up with.
- [00:00:42.270]To do some recording, I also have my colored pencils
- [00:00:45.490]and I created an Apple Science logger right here.
- [00:00:50.060]Now that I have all of my apple slices cut up,
- [00:00:52.590]I'm gonna transfer them into my jars over here.
- [00:00:56.950]So I'm just gonna put a few slices in each jar here.
- [00:01:03.760]Fill them up.
- [00:01:05.520]I'm gonna try and make sure that I have
- [00:01:06.840]about the same amount in each of these jars here.
- [00:01:11.380]Some might have a little bit more than others,
- [00:01:13.360]but you know what?
- [00:01:14.270]That's just okay by me.
- [00:01:16.480]So now that I have all of these filled up,
- [00:01:19.260]I'm gonna kind of line them up in order here
- [00:01:22.540]so that I can see them all when I fill them up.
- [00:01:26.514]So first I'm gonna take my tonic water right here
- [00:01:30.800]and fill it up.
- [00:01:33.010]Whoa, it's really bubbly.
- [00:01:35.970]I wonder what's gonna happen to my apple slices.
- [00:01:40.400]Put it all in there.
- [00:01:42.280]I already noticing that they floated to the top.
- [00:01:46.200]Now I have my cranberry juice that I'm gonna pour in here.
- [00:01:51.270]See what happens to my apple slices.
- [00:01:55.690]Cool, I notice they're floating on the top too.
- [00:02:00.070]Now I'm gonna grab my soda and pour it in.
- [00:02:06.380]It's getting foamy.
- [00:02:08.260]I can still really hear the fizz
- [00:02:11.030]in the tonic water and in the soda.
- [00:02:15.740]Then I'm gonna go to my sink
- [00:02:17.874]and I'm gonna fill up the glass with water.
- [00:02:23.955](water running)
- [00:02:33.135]There we go.
- [00:02:34.404]They're all right there.
- [00:02:37.690]Now that I have them all filled up,
- [00:02:39.370]I might full some of 'em up a little bit more later,
- [00:02:42.550]but I'm gonna go to my log right here,
- [00:02:46.170]get my colored pencils and I'm gonna draw
- [00:02:48.480]what each of my jars look like right now.
- [00:02:51.810]So this is before really too much is happening
- [00:02:54.320]to my apple slices.
- [00:02:56.710]So here in my log, I drew my tonic water here.
- [00:03:00.270]I can't really draw how clear it is,
- [00:03:02.820]so I added my bubbles in here
- [00:03:04.607]and the apple slices on the top.
- [00:03:07.430]Then on my cranberry juice, I just colored it in red
- [00:03:09.920]and the apple slices on the top.
- [00:03:13.420]For the soda, I colored it in brown,
- [00:03:18.070]right here, to match how dark it is there
- [00:03:21.200]and I also, then, drew some bubbles.
- [00:03:23.580]It's kind of hard to see but they're blue right here,
- [00:03:25.940]the bubble in there, 'cause I see some fizz at the top.
- [00:03:28.900]And for the water, right here, I just kept it clear,
- [00:03:32.960]but added the apple slices floating at the top.
- [00:03:36.380]So I'm gonna wait about a couple hours,
- [00:03:39.050]like I have here, just two hours,
- [00:03:41.050]I'm gonna come back and check on it
- [00:03:42.450]and see what happens.
- [00:03:46.760]Do you have any predictions about what's gonna happen?
- [00:03:50.405](upbeat music)
- [00:03:57.497]It has now been two hours since I check on my apples
- [00:04:00.990]and lookit, in the tonic water,
- [00:04:02.370]they all flipped upside down.
- [00:04:04.200]I see that they're kind of turning a little bit brown,
- [00:04:06.680]but they mostly still look like apples.
- [00:04:09.430]In the cranberry juice, I noticed that some of the edges
- [00:04:12.750]are turning a little bit red to match that color
- [00:04:15.800]of that juice and they're all just still floating on top.
- [00:04:20.150]In the pop, they don't look too different to me right now.
- [00:04:23.760]They still look pretty similar.
- [00:04:26.810]And also here in the water,
- [00:04:28.500]I noticed that my water kind of has changed colors.
- [00:04:31.420]It looks almost a little bit yellow,
- [00:04:33.860]kind of like the color of the apple on the inside.
- [00:04:37.000]And lookit what I noticed here,
- [00:04:39.470]let's see if it'll flip for me.
- [00:04:42.054]Lookit right here.
- [00:04:44.660]It's kind of hard to tell, but the skin of the apple
- [00:04:47.270]is starting to peel off of the inside of the apple.
- [00:04:51.310]Huh, that's really interesting.
- [00:04:53.240]So now that I figured out and waited,
- [00:04:56.960]we'll have to see what happened to my apples,
- [00:04:59.560]I'm now gonna record it again on my Apple Science log.
- [00:05:05.140]So here I started to draw in my apples
- [00:05:08.880]onto my recording sheet, my log.
- [00:05:11.990]So first for the tonic water,
- [00:05:13.640]I drew my apples being upside down with the skin on top.
- [00:05:18.120]The cranberry juice, I made really thick outlines
- [00:05:20.700]to show that red seeping in there.
- [00:05:23.330]The soda, I took away the bubbles,
- [00:05:25.040]'cause I didn't see any more in there.
- [00:05:27.550]And in the water, I started to draw
- [00:05:30.210]some of the peel starting to peel away from the apple.
- [00:05:35.180]I left this one blank because I want you to figure out
- [00:05:39.190]what happens after you leave the apples
- [00:05:42.020]in the jars for two days.
- [00:05:45.350]Don't forget to record it.
- [00:05:47.130]Have a beautiful day.
- [00:05:49.069](upbeat music)
