- [00:00:12.760]Hi.
- [00:00:13.710]So I want to share with you a simple activity
- [00:00:17.550]that you can do to teach your child
- [00:00:21.500]how to read during this time.
- [00:00:24.150]You can take this activity.
- [00:00:25.940]it's something that you can do at home
- [00:00:27.870]and it is also something that is easy
- [00:00:31.200]for you to teach them not only how to write,
- [00:00:35.160]but also how to read sentences
- [00:00:37.470]using some very early kindergarten
- [00:00:40.520]like first quarter sight words.
- [00:00:42.290]So I have these strips.
- [00:00:44.290]I just have these strips they used from recycling something.
- [00:00:48.640]I can't remember what it was,
- [00:00:49.680]but I saved them because I thought it would be pretty cool,
- [00:00:51.730]you know, to use for someday.
- [00:00:53.440]And what I did was,
- [00:00:54.459]is on the strips, I put a slash
- [00:00:59.570]and for each letter.
- [00:01:00.768]And then in highlighter, I wrote a sight word.
- [00:01:05.780]So this one is I can.
- [00:01:07.259]and the reason why I wrote it in highlighter
- [00:01:09.690]is because for young children
- [00:01:11.610]who have not experienced kindergarten yet,
- [00:01:13.568]and they're just learning their sight words,
- [00:01:16.149]it's light enough that they can see it and trace it,
- [00:01:20.650]but not too dark so that when they take a pencil,
- [00:01:24.900]or some other form of writing material
- [00:01:26.860]that's darker than highlighter yellow,
- [00:01:29.370]they'll be able to see them write it themselves.
- [00:01:32.620]And they'll be able to see that they can write
- [00:01:35.380]these sight words.
- [00:01:36.213]So one step I have is I can,
- [00:01:39.900]the other one is, I see a
- [00:01:45.700]and another one that I have is I am.
- [00:01:49.420]And these are the sight words that my Pre-K children
- [00:01:52.960]who are going on to kindergarten are learning right now.
- [00:01:55.160]So I'm going to show you how you can use these
- [00:01:58.850]to teach a child again not only how to write
- [00:02:01.970]but also how to read.
- [00:02:03.419](cool music)
- [00:02:27.150]Now it's their turn.
- [00:02:28.120]After you find a writing utensil,
- [00:02:29.790]I'd like to use red because red really sticks in the brain.
- [00:02:32.588]Have them write the words out
- [00:02:34.730]and spell the words as they write.
- [00:02:36.950]S-e-e, then read it, I see.
- [00:02:40.430]Do the same thing for all of the sentences.
- [00:02:42.470]I am. I as they write it,
- [00:02:46.800]a-m, am.
- [00:02:51.030]I am.
- [00:02:54.650]Now these are a little long.
- [00:02:56.190]So what I want to do is I want to cut it off
- [00:02:59.990]right after the last word here,
- [00:03:04.110]because the activity that we're going to do,
- [00:03:06.900]they're going to stop at this word,
- [00:03:08.670]and they're going to place their own activity picture,
- [00:03:12.050]or verb, noun, whatever it is here.
- [00:03:16.048]So you're going to cut this off after the last word.
- [00:03:21.730]And then that makes it also easy for you to just carry
- [00:03:24.160]these around when it comes to doing the activity outside
- [00:03:27.250]or in your house.
- [00:03:28.980]Okay, so now,
- [00:03:30.450]I'm taking my sentence strips outside
- [00:03:32.477]and I'm going to find things outside
- [00:03:36.520]that I can read them with.
- [00:03:39.020]And apply my sight words
- [00:03:41.130]and my sentences in my writing to reading.
- [00:03:43.390]I see a flower.
- [00:03:45.979](cool music)
- [00:03:51.830]I am smiling.
- [00:03:55.560]I see a tree.
- [00:03:59.740]I see a car.
- [00:04:03.820]I can run.
- [00:04:07.360]I can jump.
- [00:04:11.208]This is a really simple way to practice your sight words.
- [00:04:15.190]These are again, beginning quarter kindergarten sight words.
- [00:04:18.970]And so if your child wants to practice sight words
- [00:04:23.110]or if you just want to help your child practice sight words,
- [00:04:25.660]whether it's going into kindergarten
- [00:04:26.920]or even going into first grade,
- [00:04:28.560]this is a fun way to get them outside
- [00:04:30.540]and practice reading and practice writing,
- [00:04:32.630]while still being able to enjoy a beautiful day.
- [00:04:34.659](instrumental music)
