Cody Hollist, associate professor of child, youth and family studies, is working with researchers in Brazil to address the needs of vulnerable youth and families in the Cachoeirinha neighborhood of Porto Alegre. [00:00:14.070]The partnerships led to new directions
[00:00:15.520]in research through the meetings we had in 2016,
[00:00:19.060]though, one of the collaborations that came out of that
[00:00:21.750]was a project we're doing in Porto Alegre,
[00:00:23.810]where we're looking at vulnerable community
[00:00:26.080]with really low resources and really high needs.
[00:00:29.330]The primary goal of the work in Porto Alegre
[00:00:31.690]is to improve educational outcomes for children and youth,
[00:00:36.960]and help them remain in the schools
[00:00:38.990]and improve the quality of the psychological development
[00:00:42.380]of those children.
[00:00:43.650]The approach of this project
[00:00:45.010]is community-based participatory research,
[00:00:47.600]which enables the community to have a big say
[00:00:50.520]in the programs and the interventions that are created.
[00:00:53.420]And so we work with the community
[00:00:54.990]to develop the interventions.
[00:00:57.070]So they continue to keep the project going
[00:00:59.760]after the research program is done.
[00:01:02.270]I really look forward
[00:01:03.160]to watching the community come together
[00:01:06.270]and develop some kind of cohesive understanding
[00:01:09.080]of what they want out of their community.
[00:01:11.960]And so it's really awesome to see them come together
[00:01:15.600]and something come out of that, that a researcher
[00:01:19.300]or an academic couldn't develop by themselves.
[00:01:22.550]Strong partnership between Nebraska and Brazil
[00:01:25.510]is important to achieving our goals
[00:01:27.900]because we each bring different expertise to the table.
[00:01:32.430]The experience of those Brazilian researchers
[00:01:34.830]has then also influenced the work
[00:01:36.810]that we're doing here in Nebraska as well.
