Identifying developmental delays in young children across Brazil
Identifying what is developmentally normal for young children and what is not can lead to earlier interventions and better outcomes. Researchers from Brazil teamed with Nebraska methodologists to test and refine the Dimensional Inventory for Child Development Assessment (IDADI), a standardized screening tool to evaluate young children’s development across Brazil.
Importantly, IDADI was the first such tool developed specifically for use among young children living in Brazil, taking into account their unique experiences and using culturally relevant measures.
The data gained from the using the fully refined and robust screening tool has the potential to help early childhood practitioners in Brazil detect developmental delays more reliably and to take appropriate steps to address children’s needs.

[00:00:31.030]is estimated to be up to 18%.
[00:00:34.010]However fewer than 1/3 of these children
[00:00:36.410]are identified by their healthcare providers.
[00:00:39.120]Brazil faces significant challenges
[00:00:41.120]in identifying children's developmental problems early on
[00:00:44.190]due to the limited number of
[00:00:45.430]standardized screening and assessment tools.
[00:00:48.080]Our research aims to address this disparity.
[00:00:51.170]Our instrument is called IDADI.
[00:00:53.851]That is acronymal in Portuguese, Inventario Dimensional
[00:00:57.710]de Avaliacao do Desenvolvimento Infantil.
[00:01:01.470]The primary goal of our project is to,
[00:01:05.040]first to refine and then test
[00:01:07.390]our instrument of evaluation of child development.
[00:01:13.490]So standardized instruments,
[00:01:15.110]like the one developed by my Brazilian colleagues,
[00:01:18.450]are especially useful for monitoring
[00:01:21.450]children's developmental trajectories
[00:01:23.480]and helping to identify children
[00:01:25.044]who might have developmental delays.
[00:01:28.040]It's important because
[00:01:29.570]it is the first instrument in Brazil
[00:01:32.430]that was constructed here in Brazil, adapted to our culture.
[00:01:36.570]It's about making a conscious effort to ensure
[00:01:38.940]that each item is culturally relevant.
[00:01:41.800]So for example, if you're a practitioner in Brazil,
[00:01:44.608]you want to know how a child is developing
[00:01:47.257]relative to other children living in Brazil.
[00:01:50.140]Not relative to children living in the U.S. or the U.K.
[00:01:53.530]or Australia who might have very different experiences.
[00:01:56.920]We collect the data
[00:01:59.574]from five regions of Brazil.
[00:02:00.990]This data was collected online
[00:02:03.100]and some with paper and pencil.
[00:02:05.480]The newly developed measure were administered
[00:02:07.620]to more than 2,000 mothers with children ranging in age from
[00:02:11.730]4 months of age all the way through 6 years of age.
[00:02:15.220]And it targets a number of
[00:02:17.070]different developmental dimensions.
[00:02:19.240]Including cognitive skills, language and motor skills,
[00:02:22.732]socio-emotional development, and adaptive behaviors.
[00:02:27.060]The primary finding from this study is that
[00:02:29.250]there's strong reliability and validity evidence
[00:02:32.340]to support using scores from this measure
[00:02:34.901]to evaluate young children's development.
[00:02:37.810]Now, we have norms for interpretation of IDADI's scores.
[00:02:43.960]And we can compare the development of a child
[00:02:47.584]with a group of children
[00:02:49.360]similar in terms of age and child development.
[00:02:52.680]Next steps for this line of research
[00:02:54.550]include developing a short form.
[00:02:56.800]So to help quickly screen for developmental delays.
[00:03:01.070]As well as a direct assessment
[00:03:02.872]as an alternative to mother report.
[00:03:05.770]In the future we think IDADI could be used
[00:03:09.600]in health services and in research projects
[00:03:12.990]that have some intervention focus in child development.
