Description
While there are distinct differences between the U.S. and Brazil, there are even more things the two countries have in common. In particular, a desire to ensure all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential guides the work of early childhood educators, researchers and other professionals in both parts of the world.
The Nebraska-Brazil Early Childhood Partnership grew from this shared vision. Today, cross-country relationships thrive.

- [00:00:27.960]The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Brazil,
- [00:00:29.980]early childhood research partnerships,
- [00:00:32.200]brings together partners across
- [00:00:34.160]the University of Nebraska campus
- [00:00:35.970]and researchers all over Brazil
- [00:00:38.200]to address critical research areas
- [00:00:40.130]to make a positive difference in the lives of children.
- [00:00:42.580]We've been engaged in Brazil
- [00:00:44.260]as a key strategic partner country
- [00:00:46.430]in our global engagement efforts
- [00:00:47.435]at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:49.600]for about eight or nine years.
- [00:00:51.230]In 2016, a workshop was convened in Sao Paulo
- [00:00:55.370]with a number of our researchers
- [00:00:57.560]from the early childhood area of UNL.
- [00:01:00.350]So it fits very keenly and clearly
- [00:01:02.870]into our Brazilian initiative,
- [00:01:05.200]where we're very engaged with Brazil
- [00:01:07.300]as one of the leading emerging economies in the world.
- [00:01:09.960]The primary partner in this collaboration
- [00:01:12.450]is with the foundation Mria Cecilia Souto Vidigal.
- [00:01:15.790]Through this partnership,
- [00:01:17.220]we have expanded the collaborations
- [00:01:19.690]with many universities, agencies, schools
- [00:01:23.250]and research partners across Brazil,
- [00:01:25.480]and it includes many university researchers here
- [00:01:27.920]at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:01:29.400]who have a sole focus on enhancing lives of young children.
- [00:01:50.880]The collaboration between UNL and the foundation
- [00:01:54.590]is important in order to generate
- [00:01:57.610]and disseminate knowledge about early childhood,
- [00:02:00.850]initiatives that are important for both countries.
- [00:02:04.530]We're co-supporting two projects,
- [00:02:06.660]one focused on supporting families
- [00:02:08.960]of children affected with Zika
- [00:02:10.800]and the other, supporting teachers,
- [00:02:12.550]as they prepare young children to become early scientists.
- [00:02:16.310]Working with the collaborators
- [00:02:17.560]in Brazil benefited the work in so many different ways.
- [00:02:20.830]One, having them on the ground there really shed light
- [00:02:23.710]on some things
- [00:02:24.543]that we couldn't know about regarding families experiences
- [00:02:27.120]and the challenges that they faced.
- [00:02:29.240]I was also inspired by our collaborators' willingness
- [00:02:32.260]to do anything to make the project successful
- [00:02:34.780]and to really engage with families
- [00:02:36.460]and just how dedicated they were
- [00:02:38.760]to bring intervention services
- [00:02:40.850]to the families that need them.
- [00:02:42.620]A third project has come about
- [00:02:44.720]because of the significant need
- [00:02:46.110]that we experience in Brazil,
- [00:02:47.930]around assessing young children's development.
- [00:02:50.480]So a collaboration between University of Nebraska
- [00:02:53.350]and a University in Port Alegre in Brazil is now focusing
- [00:02:57.050]on establishing benchmarks using a brand new tool
- [00:03:00.500]that was developed
- [00:03:01.333]in collaboration across the two institutions.
- [00:03:04.320]Over the three years that these projects have been in place,
- [00:03:07.380]we have seen some remarkable benefits already.
- [00:03:11.040]We are experiencing some benefits for young children,
- [00:03:14.370]their families, their teachers,
- [00:03:16.810]even communities are benefiting from the work
- [00:03:19.100]that's happening across this partnership.
- [00:03:22.020]There's real power in partnerships.
- [00:03:24.140]By working together across the globe,
- [00:03:26.500]we are able to share perspectives,
- [00:03:28.460]learn from one another, identify similarities
- [00:03:31.830]that might help us create meaningful outcomes
- [00:03:34.210]in unique places, as well as differences
- [00:03:37.340]that help us understand the contexts
- [00:03:39.160]within which our work matters.
- [00:04:09.165]No one group can tackle the challenges we face
- [00:04:11.400]in early childhood alone.
- [00:04:13.270]We really can gain insights from each other's experiences
- [00:04:16.350]and learning across cultural contexts can lead
- [00:04:19.130]to more innovation.
- [00:04:20.960]I think Nebraska, it's an excellent opportunity
- [00:04:23.610]for Brazil to open eyes and ears
- [00:04:27.300]to what's going on in the world
- [00:04:28.940]and so it's an excellent opportunity for partnership.
- [00:04:34.290]There's lots of exciting new directions
- [00:04:36.310]that will be occurring as a function of this partnership.
- [00:04:39.640]First and foremost, we will continue
- [00:04:41.630]to grow and deepen our relationships
- [00:04:43.540]with Brazilian colleagues.
- [00:04:45.110]We've already identified some expansions of this work
- [00:04:49.310]that will lead to bigger and greater research studies
- [00:04:53.610]and have much more significant impact
- [00:04:55.820]in the lives of children both in Brazil
- [00:04:57.800]and here in Nebraska.
