- [00:00:00.280](guitar music)
- [00:00:03.420]Often one of the first concerns
- [00:00:05.060]of transitioning to college is in creating a sense
- [00:00:07.330]of financial well-being.
- [00:00:09.010]Our orientation leaders have some insider tips for you.
- [00:00:11.960]Both the advice that they received
- [00:00:13.660]and the advice that they wished they would have received.
- [00:00:16.440](upbeat music)
- [00:00:19.340]If you're living on campus,
- [00:00:21.040]or have already purchased a meal plan,
- [00:00:23.400]I found that one of the best ways to save money in college
- [00:00:27.060]is by opting to use your meal plan
- [00:00:30.430]instead of going out to eat every night.
- [00:00:33.310]Your meal plan grants you access
- [00:00:35.250]to any of the dining halls on campus.
- [00:00:42.350]Many local and delicious restaurants
- [00:00:44.460]are actually just walking distance off campus,
- [00:00:47.080]and even offer discounts with your NCARD.
- [00:00:50.030]When I go off campus to eat, I make sure to ask
- [00:00:52.700]if they offer a student discount.
- [00:00:54.970]Another great hack is using pocket points.
- [00:00:57.360]Pocket points is an app that you can download on your phone
- [00:01:00.030]and earn points by staying off of your phone during class.
- [00:01:03.420]You can redeem those points
- [00:01:04.670]at participating local businesses.
- [00:01:06.680]My personal favorite is getting a free coffee
- [00:01:08.840]at the coffee house which is super close to campus.
- [00:01:14.860]Husker Hub is a resource on campus
- [00:01:16.690]to help you answer questions related to financial aid,
- [00:01:20.050]scholarships, your student account, and more.
- [00:01:23.210]Husker Hub is not a sandwich shop.
- [00:01:25.570]However there are several made-to-order sandwich shops
- [00:01:27.930]across campus that are covered by your meal plan.
- [00:01:30.600]I loved going to these when I had a short lunch break
- [00:01:32.920]in between classes instead of having to pay for fast food.
- [00:01:38.980]There are so many activities to do with your friends
- [00:01:41.090]covered by your student fees.
- [00:01:42.750]My favorite is going
- [00:01:43.810]to free ice skating nights at John Breslow.
- [00:01:46.390]I also love going to listen to speakers
- [00:01:48.480]and attending concerts put on by UPC Nebraksa.
- [00:01:51.570]My friends and I love going to the Lied Center.
- [00:01:53.780]Some performances are completely free
- [00:01:55.650]and other's offer tickets at reduced prices.
- [00:01:58.370]I met some of my closest friends
- [00:01:59.630]from my floor Freshman year.
- [00:02:01.150]We loved going to our RA's floor events
- [00:02:02.980]for some fun activities and free food.
- [00:02:08.590]You can, but that doesn't always mean that you should.
- [00:02:11.660]I made the mistake of racking up a lot of charges
- [00:02:13.970]on my NCARD my first semester here.
- [00:02:16.120]I received a very concerned phone call from my parents
- [00:02:18.650]when the bill was posted.
- [00:02:19.970]Since then I've stuck to using mostly cash
- [00:02:22.620]for all of my purchases.
- [00:02:23.970]This helps me to be accountable for
- [00:02:26.060]how much I spend every month.
- [00:02:27.690]And I found that opening a UBT account here on campus
- [00:02:30.200]has really helped me to monitor how much money
- [00:02:33.020]and track my spending as well as have easy access
- [00:02:35.280]to cash when I need it.
- [00:02:40.110]Ah, the age old question.
- [00:02:43.160]I frequently had to think about if I am spending money
- [00:02:46.620]on something I need or something I want.
- [00:02:51.830]I try to make sure I mainly purchase items
- [00:02:54.300]that are necessary.
- [00:02:55.920]I do however set aside a little bit of money each month
- [00:02:59.150]to use for fun.
- [00:03:00.550]This helps me spend a reasonable amount throughout the month
- [00:03:03.910]instead of going overboard.
- [00:03:05.700]Of course certain experiences tend to come
- [00:03:08.340]with a price tag, but they also come
- [00:03:10.420]with really great memories too.
- [00:03:12.910]I always try to be aware of what I'm spending,
- [00:03:16.000]but not to be afraid of spending money.
- [00:03:18.470]One of my favorite experiences in college
- [00:03:20.980]has been a road trip that I went on with my friends
- [00:03:23.850]which of course cost a little bit for gas,
- [00:03:27.010]and for hotel rooms, and those sorts of things.
- [00:03:29.710]But that's a memory that I will cherish forever.
- [00:03:32.910]Finding a middle ground between being a total tight wad
- [00:03:35.960]and then being way too loosey goosey with my money
- [00:03:38.910]has been really key for me.
- [00:03:43.890]It is true.
- [00:03:45.030]Textbooks can be a bit pricey,
- [00:03:46.350]but I've found a few ways to cut costs.
- [00:03:48.610]I opt to use a used textbook whenever possible
- [00:03:51.300]and rent textbooks that I don't think I'll need
- [00:03:52.960]at the end of the semester.
- [00:03:54.380]The campus store will price match other bookstores as well
- [00:03:57.090]which is a great way to save money.
- [00:04:03.940]Developing healthy financial habits
- [00:04:05.870]can seem super overwhelming when you first come
- [00:04:08.130]to the University, but it's important to remember
- [00:04:10.830]to be patient with yourself.
- [00:04:12.690]These habits do not form overnight.
- [00:04:15.260]It takes persistence.
- [00:04:17.130]But with time, they can develop in your life.
- [00:04:20.710]Students at the University come from all sorts
- [00:04:23.210]of different financial backgrounds.
- [00:04:25.310]It's important to know that there are resources
- [00:04:27.790]and support available for all students.
- [00:04:30.630]Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help.
- [00:04:33.500]Financial well-being is something
- [00:04:35.080]you should want to achieve,
- [00:04:36.760]and something you definitely can.
- [00:04:38.629](upbeat music)
