- [00:00:12.160]Hi family and friends.
- [00:00:15.470]I wanted to introduce to you a few friends of mine.
- [00:00:19.420]This is Gerald, Gerald the Giraffe.
- [00:00:24.350]And this is Sam, Sam the Snake.
- [00:00:29.300]Sometimes, when somebody asks Gerald
- [00:00:34.840]to do something in front of the camera,
- [00:00:38.050]or in front of his friends, he gets kind of scared.
- [00:00:42.820]One of those things that sometimes he has to do
- [00:00:45.190]in front of the camera is dance!
- [00:00:48.530]And he does not think that he can dance.
- [00:00:52.350]Let's see if Gerald can dance.
- [00:00:57.037]"Giraffes Can't Dance" by Giles Andreae.

- [00:01:09.270]Gerald was a tall giraffe whose neck was long and slim.
- [00:01:14.530]But his knees were awfully crooked,
- [00:01:16.860]and his legs were rather thin.
- [00:01:23.210]He was very good at standing still
- [00:01:26.800]and munching shoots off trees.
- [00:01:30.350]But when he tried to run around,
- [00:01:32.390]he buckled at the knees, kerplunk.
- [00:01:38.390]Now every year in Africa, they hold the Jungle Dance,
- [00:01:42.830]where every single animal turns up to skip and prance.
- [00:01:49.230]Jungle days!
- [00:01:52.140]And this year, when the day arrived,
- [00:01:54.150]poor Gerald felt so sad,
- [00:01:56.600]because when it came to dancing,
- [00:01:58.950]he was really very bad.
- [00:02:04.962]The warthogs started waltzing,
- [00:02:08.450]and the rhinos rock and rolled.
- [00:02:12.050]The lions danced a tango
- [00:02:14.840]that was elegant and bold.
- [00:02:17.800]Look at those rhinos.
- [00:02:21.060]Do you see the lions doing the tango?
- [00:02:29.580]Oh wait 'til you see these chimps.
- [00:02:32.120]The chimps all did a cha-cha with a very Latin feel,
- [00:02:37.380]and eight baboons then teamed up
- [00:02:40.030]for a splendid Scottish reel.
- [00:02:44.020]Look at them doing that Scottish dance.
- [00:02:50.290]Gerald swallowed bravely as he walked toward the floor,
- [00:02:54.870]but the lions saw him coming and they soon began to roar.
- [00:03:00.537]"Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," the animals all sneered.
- [00:03:04.977]"Giraffes can't dance, you silly fool!
- [00:03:08.457]"Oh Gerald, you are so weird."
- [00:03:12.300]Oh no.
- [00:03:15.460]Those animals are not being very kind to Gerald.
- [00:03:21.760]They're not being good friends, are they?
- [00:03:25.600]Let's see what happens next.
- [00:03:29.190]Gerald simply froze up.
- [00:03:31.030]He was rooted to the spot.
- [00:03:34.810]Look at him, he's frozen.
- [00:03:38.547]"They're right," he thought.
- [00:03:41.357]"I'm useless, oh, I feel like such a clot."
- [00:03:47.250]Oh, poor Gerald.
- [00:03:49.350]So he crept off from the dance floor,
- [00:03:51.610]and he started walking home.
- [00:03:54.200]He'd never felt so sad before,
- [00:03:56.410]so sad and so alone.
- [00:04:01.220]Sometimes when friends say not-very-nice things to us,
- [00:04:04.350]it makes us feel sad.
- [00:04:07.940]And sometimes we just wanna be alone when we're sad.
- [00:04:14.300]Then he found a little clearing,
- [00:04:17.520]and he looked up at the sky.
- [00:04:20.077]"The moon can be so beautiful," he whispered with a sigh.
- [00:04:26.297]"Excuse me," (blows lips) coughed a cricket,
- [00:04:32.230]who'd seen Gerald earlier on,
- [00:04:35.347]"but sometimes when you're different,
- [00:04:37.107]"you just need a different song,"
- [00:04:40.610]chirped the cricket to Gerald.
- [00:04:46.137]"Listen to the swaying grass and listen to the trees.
- [00:04:50.127]"To me the sweetest music is those branches in the breeze.
- [00:04:56.157]"So imagine that the lovely moon is playing just for you.
- [00:05:00.797]"Everything makes music, if you really want it to."
- [00:05:06.910]With that, the cricket smiled and picked up his violin.
- [00:05:12.670]Then Gerald felt his body do the most amazing thing.
- [00:05:18.820]His hooves had started shuffling,
- [00:05:21.340]making circles on the ground.
- [00:05:23.680]His neck was gently swaying
- [00:05:26.180]and his tail was swishing around.
- [00:05:31.360]What is Gerald doing?
- [00:05:33.496]Ha, Gerald, whoa!
- [00:05:41.050]He threw his legs out sideways and he swung them everywhere.
- [00:05:45.680]Then he did a backwards somersault
- [00:05:48.660]and leapt up into the air.
- [00:05:53.580]Gerald felt so wonderful, his mouth was open wide.
- [00:05:56.637]"I'm dancing, yes I'm dancing!
- [00:06:00.467]"I'm dancing," Gerald cried.
- [00:06:05.360]Then, one by one, each animal
- [00:06:09.390]who'd been there at the dance when Gerald arrived,
- [00:06:13.290]they boogied on and watched him, quite entranced.
- [00:06:18.600]They shouted, "It's a miracle!
- [00:06:21.087]"We must be in a dream.
- [00:06:22.917]"Gerald's the best dancer that we've ever seen.
- [00:06:30.167]"How did you learn to dance like that?
- [00:06:32.117]"Please Gerald, tell us how."
- [00:06:34.530]But Gerald simply twirled around
- [00:06:37.300]and finished with a bow.
- [00:06:44.910]Then he raised his head
- [00:06:48.320]and looked up at the moon and stars above.
- [00:06:51.497]"We all can dance," he said,
- [00:06:54.117]"when we find music that we love."
- [00:06:58.220]Go Gerald!
- [00:07:00.943]Look at it, he found his dance moves.
- [00:07:03.970]He found confidence.
- [00:07:05.980]He was excited to dance in front of his friends.
- [00:07:09.750]He just had another friend give him a little pep talk.
- [00:07:13.600]That's sometimes how we can help ourselves
- [00:07:15.950]not be sad anymore, is find a nice friend
- [00:07:18.980]that can give us a pep talk.
- [00:07:21.350]A pep talk, or kind words.
- [00:07:24.250]Sometimes it might be, "You can do it!"
- [00:07:27.320]I hope that you all find happiness in dancing,
- [00:07:30.480]just like Gerald did.
