- [00:00:00.000](upbeat music)
- [00:00:03.420]Often, one of the first concerns
- [00:00:05.060]with transitioning to college
- [00:00:06.350]is in creating a sense of financial wellbeing.
- [00:00:09.010]Our orientation leaders have some insider tips for you.
- [00:00:11.960]Both the advice that they received
- [00:00:13.660]and the advice that they wished they would have received.
- [00:00:16.217](upbeat music)
- [00:00:19.340]If you're living on campus,
- [00:00:21.040]or have already purchased a meal plan,
- [00:00:23.400]I found that one of the best ways
- [00:00:25.440]to save money in college is
- [00:00:27.220]by opting to use your meal plan
- [00:00:30.430]instead of going out to eat every night.
- [00:00:33.310]Your meal plan grants you access
- [00:00:35.250]to any of the dining halls on campus.
- [00:00:38.545](upbeat music)
- [00:00:42.350]Many local and delicious restaurants
- [00:00:44.460]are actually just walking distance off campus
- [00:00:47.080]and even offer discounts with your NCard.
- [00:00:50.030]When I go off campus to eat,
- [00:00:51.660]I make sure to ask if they offer student discount.
- [00:00:54.970]Another great hack is using Pocket Points.
- [00:00:57.360]Pocket Points is an app that you can download
- [00:00:59.120]on your phone and earn points
- [00:01:00.890]by staying off of your phone during class.
- [00:01:03.420]You can redeem those points
- [00:01:04.670]at participating local businesses.
- [00:01:06.680]My personal favorite is getting a free coffee
- [00:01:08.840]at the Coffee House which is super close to campus.
- [00:01:11.175](upbeat music)
- [00:01:14.860]Husker Hub is a resource on campus
- [00:01:16.690]to help you answer questions
- [00:01:18.140]related to your financial aid, scholarships,
- [00:01:21.100]your student account and more.
- [00:01:23.210]Husker Hub is not a sandwich shop,
- [00:01:25.570]however there are several made-to-order sandwich shops
- [00:01:27.930]across campus that are covered by your meal plan.
- [00:01:30.600]I loved going to these when I had a short lunch break
- [00:01:32.920]in between classes instead of having to pay for fast food.
- [00:01:35.982](upbeat music)
- [00:01:38.980]There are so many activities to do with your friends
- [00:01:41.090]covered by your student fees.
- [00:01:42.750]My favorite is going to free ice skating nights
- [00:01:45.040]at John Breslow.
- [00:01:46.390]I also love going to listen to speakers
- [00:01:48.480]and attending concerts put on by UPC Nebraska.
- [00:01:51.570]My friends and I love going to the League Center.
- [00:01:53.780]Some performances are completely free,
- [00:01:55.650]and others offer tickets at reduced prices.
- [00:01:58.090]I made some of my closest friends
- [00:01:59.630]from my floor of freshman year.
- [00:02:01.150]We loved going to our exploring events
- [00:02:02.980]for some fun activities and free food.
- [00:02:04.802](upbeat music)
- [00:02:08.590]You can, but that doesn't always mean
- [00:02:10.580]that you should.
- [00:02:11.660]I made the mistake of wracking up a lot of charges
- [00:02:13.970]on my NCard my first semester here.
- [00:02:16.120]I received a very concerned phone call
- [00:02:17.920]from my parents when the bill was posted.
- [00:02:19.970]Since then I've stuck to using mostly cash
- [00:02:22.620]for all of my purchases.
- [00:02:23.970]This helps me to be accountable
- [00:02:25.390]for how much I spend every month.
- [00:02:27.690]And I've found that opening a UBT account
- [00:02:29.460]here on campus has really helped me to monitor
- [00:02:32.450]how much money and track my spending,
- [00:02:33.970]as well as have easy access to cash when I need it.
- [00:02:36.382](upbeat music)
- [00:02:40.110]Ah, the age-old question.
- [00:02:43.160]I frequently have to think about
- [00:02:44.890]if I'm spending money on something that I need
- [00:02:48.860]or something that I want.
- [00:02:51.830]I try to make sure I mainly purchase items
- [00:02:54.300]that are necessary.
- [00:02:55.920]I do, however, set aside a little bit of money
- [00:02:58.410]each month to use for fun.
- [00:03:00.550]This helps me spend a reasonable amount throughout the month
- [00:03:03.910]instead of going overboard.
- [00:03:05.700]Of course, certain experiences
- [00:03:07.810]tend to come with a price tag,
- [00:03:09.490]but they also come with really great memories too.
- [00:03:12.910]I always try to be aware of what I'm spending,
- [00:03:16.000]but not to be afraid of spending money.
- [00:03:18.470]One of my favorite experiences in college
- [00:03:20.980]has been a road trip that I went on
- [00:03:22.640]with my friends, which of course
- [00:03:24.500]cost a little bit for gas and for hotel rooms
- [00:03:28.180]and those sorts of things,
- [00:03:29.710]but that's a memory that I will cherish forever.
- [00:03:32.910]Finding a middle ground
- [00:03:33.930]between being a total tight-wad
- [00:03:35.960]and then being way too loosy-goosy with my money...
