- [00:00:00.371](upbeat music)
- [00:00:03.400]Life as a Husker.
- [00:00:05.280]What was it really like?
- [00:00:06.810]Let us tell you from the perspective
- [00:00:08.480]of some current Huskers.
- [00:00:09.864](upbeat music)
- [00:00:12.510]Whether you're living on campus.
- [00:00:14.100]Or you commute to and from campus, like I did.
- [00:00:16.320]Campus offers a convenience
- [00:00:17.610]you just can't find anywhere else.
- [00:00:19.240]Like having a five minute walk to class, sign me up.
- [00:00:22.220]Not to mention, it makes you feel more connected
- [00:00:24.170]to this university.
- [00:00:25.220]It builds the foundation
- [00:00:26.820]for the rest of your college career.
- [00:00:28.710]And it makes it easier to find opportunities
- [00:00:31.260]in your community at UNL.
- [00:00:33.041]Like I found my community through a leadership
- [00:00:35.230]mentoring program at Nebraska Human Resources Institute.
- [00:00:38.520]Find a spot on campus that's home to you.
- [00:00:40.590]One of my favorite spots on campus is by the fountain,
- [00:00:42.970]especially on a sunny day.
- [00:00:44.330]If that home is living on campus, make the most of it.
- [00:00:48.190]Attend events all over campus.
- [00:00:50.190]I actually got to meet Schmidt from "New Girl"
- [00:00:52.530]at our University Program Council, or UPC here on campus.
- [00:00:56.730]And it was so fun.
- [00:00:58.100]When you are in a residence hall,
- [00:00:59.740]remember to be respectful of the place that you are in,
- [00:01:02.660]as well as those around you, especially your roommate.
- [00:01:05.430]If you encounter a conflict
- [00:01:06.590]with your roommate, communicate.
- [00:01:08.890]If you are struggling to talk with them,
- [00:01:10.430]ask your RA to facilitate a conversation
- [00:01:12.680]between you and your roommate.
- [00:01:14.168]RAs are there for you and are trained to help
- [00:01:16.410]with roommate conversations.
- [00:01:17.981]It's important to know that you don't have to be
- [00:01:19.830]best friends with your roommate.
- [00:01:21.500]I actually ended up meeting my best friend at a floor event
- [00:01:23.930]held by my RA.
- [00:01:25.001](upbeat music)
- [00:01:27.780]Finding your community in college may be a daunting task.
- [00:01:31.190]But an easy way to overcome this is to get involved.
- [00:01:34.000]It may take time to find your niche or group
- [00:01:36.280]to get involved with.
- [00:01:37.750]But that's okay, normal even.
- [00:01:40.670]Know that high school experiences do not have to dictate
- [00:01:43.930]what you do in college.
- [00:01:45.130]I joined the rowing club my first year,
- [00:01:47.320]which is something I never even thought about
- [00:01:49.060]in high school.
- [00:01:50.010]Involvement can be so much more than just on campus
- [00:01:53.410]because there's a world of opportunities off of campus too.
- [00:01:56.750]You can go to concerts, speakers,
- [00:01:58.800]or even visit really cool coffee shops.
- [00:02:00.752](upbeat music)
- [00:02:03.040]Here at UNL, we hold this saying very close to our hearts.
- [00:02:07.160]It's okay to not be okay.
- [00:02:08.930]College can be a challenging time academically,
- [00:02:11.930]emotionally, and physically.
- [00:02:13.710]You can make lifelong friends, memories,
- [00:02:16.380]and even find out what your passionate about,
- [00:02:18.390]all by getting involved on campus.
- [00:02:20.020]That's why UNL has Big Red Resilience and Well-being.
- [00:02:23.220]They focus on the nine dimensions of well-being
- [00:02:25.310]to help you be the best student that you can be.
- [00:02:27.180]They offer well-being coaches, money coaches,
- [00:02:29.750]funding stress events, and more.
- [00:02:31.720]We also have another resource,
- [00:02:33.310]counseling and psychological services, or CAPS.
- [00:02:36.880]They provide counselors and psychologists
- [00:02:38.980]to help you improve your mental, psychological,
- [00:02:41.950]and emotional well-being when issues arise.
- [00:02:44.270]It is so important to prioritize
- [00:02:45.750]your mental health during college.
- [00:02:47.350]One way I like to prioritize my mental health
- [00:02:49.710]is actually by drawing.
- [00:02:51.474](upbeat music)
- [00:02:53.400]Always helps me decompress after a long day.
- [00:02:55.440]College is a new environment that brings new obstacles
- [00:02:57.890]you may have never had to face before.
- [00:02:59.670]Know that reaching out for help from Big Red Resilience
- [00:03:02.290]and Well-being or CAPS does not make you weak or incapable.
- [00:03:06.550]It makes you strong and courageous to ask for help
- [00:03:09.850]when you need it.
- [00:03:10.683]There are so many resources here to support you at UNL
- [00:03:12.950]that truly care about your well-being.
- [00:03:14.710](upbeat music)
- [00:03:17.480]The campus culture at UNL is so full of rich tradition,
- [00:03:20.950]innovation, and diversity.
- [00:03:22.730]The culture on campus is constantly striving
- [00:03:25.010]to be more diverse and inclusive.
- [00:03:27.640]The university is making an effort to do this
- [00:03:30.010]and it could be felt all across campus.
- [00:03:32.230]What does diversity and inclusion mean?
- [00:03:34.800]Diversity is the characteristics that make
- [00:03:37.440]each and every one of us unique, like race, ethnicity,
- [00:03:41.150]religion, sexual orientation, and so many more.
- [00:03:44.720]Inclusion are the behaviors that make people feel welcome.
- [00:03:47.610]The University of Nebraska-Lincoln emphasizes diversity
- [00:03:50.330]and inclusion, so each student will always feel at home
- [00:03:53.530]on our campus.
- [00:03:54.700]If you feel as though you have not had an experience
- [00:03:57.600]with diversity before coming to our campus,
- [00:04:00.400]there's no need to worry.
- [00:04:01.630]Campus offers experiences and conversations,
- [00:04:04.410]or you can further your knowledge
- [00:04:05.800]of diversity and inclusion.
- [00:04:07.490]Husker Dialogues is a great opportunity for growth
- [00:04:09.910]because they teach you how to have the hard conversations.
- [00:04:12.301]UNL has created the environment to do this,
- [00:04:15.460]to have these more difficult conversations,
- [00:04:18.640]which are so important in the real world.
- [00:04:21.230]Come to UNL with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
- [00:04:23.900]No matter who you are, you are safe and supported
- [00:04:26.900]on this campus.
- [00:04:28.070]No matter who you are, there's a place for you
- [00:04:30.260]to call home here at UNL.
- [00:04:31.940]No matter who you are.
- [00:04:33.130]You are a Husker.
- [00:04:35.630]Welcome home.
- [00:04:36.572]Welcome home.
- [00:04:38.316]Welcome home.
- [00:04:40.147]Welcome home.
- [00:04:41.905]Welcome home.
- [00:04:43.374]Welcome home.
- [00:04:44.784]Welcome home.
- [00:04:45.834]Welcome home.
- [00:04:46.850]Welcome home.
- [00:04:48.144]Welcome home.
- [00:04:49.365]Welcome home.
- [00:04:51.081](upbeat music)
