- [00:01:31.850]and keep up with the current happenings in the college.
- [00:01:37.380]My role in the college is to lead a team
- [00:01:39.620]in Engineering Student Services,
- [00:01:41.610]committed to supporting you
- [00:01:42.880]and achieving your academic and career goals
- [00:01:45.810]while you're an Engineering student and beyond.
- [00:01:48.481]One of the areas I lead is something
- [00:01:50.420]we call The Complete Engineer.
- [00:01:51.900]At a very basic level, The Complete Engineer
- [00:01:54.160]at Nebraska is an engineer who has
- [00:01:56.580]both a strong technical skillset
- [00:01:59.074]and non-technical skills needed
- [00:02:01.590]to be a successful engineer these days.
- [00:02:03.830]We asked engineering employers
- [00:02:05.609]to help us identify the most important of these skills
- [00:02:09.230]and together we developed
- [00:02:10.207]our six Complete Engineer competencies.
- [00:02:12.849]Inclusive excellence, communication,
- [00:02:15.665]teamwork, self-management and leadership,
- [00:02:19.110]civic responsibility, and professionalism and ethics.
- [00:02:23.740]We want all our students to work
- [00:02:25.340]on developing these competencies
- [00:02:27.310]and strive to be The Complete Engineer.
- [00:02:29.730]You can build these skills through
- [00:02:31.060]just about anything you do in the College of Engineering.
- [00:02:33.640]You'll find our competency icons throughout our website,
- [00:02:36.518]on our event flyers, and even throughout this slideshow.
- [00:02:40.520]We make sure you grow and develop during your time here,
- [00:02:43.390]whether that's through an internship,
- [00:02:44.840]a student organization you join,
- [00:02:46.440]research you conduct alongside our amazing faculty,
- [00:02:49.740]or even going to The Complete Engineer conference.
- [00:02:52.500]You're going to learn more about plenty of opportunities
- [00:02:54.850]to get involved through the rest of this presentation,
- [00:02:57.190]so plan to take advantage of anything and everything.
- [00:02:59.710]Trust me, your path to becoming
- [00:03:01.250]a great engineer begins here at Nebraska.
- [00:03:03.990]There's more information
- [00:03:04.920]on this at go.unl.edu/completeengineer.
- [00:03:11.550]The best way to get involved right away
- [00:03:13.360]in the College of Engineering is to start
- [00:03:15.330]at the NUBE Experience.
- [00:03:16.970]NUBE stands for Nebraska Undergraduates Becoming Engineers.
- [00:03:20.940]It's a really fun, two-day program happening
- [00:03:22.419]right before school starts.
- [00:03:24.560]All new, first-year students are expected to attend NUBE
- [00:03:27.244]and students who have attended
- [00:03:28.720]in the past have amazing things to say about it.
- [00:03:31.210]For the first day, we focus on orienting you
- [00:03:33.330]to life as a student in the College of Engineering.
- [00:03:35.860]You'll meet current students who can give you tons of advice
- [00:03:38.250]and get to know some faculty in your major
- [00:03:40.080]before classes even begin.
- [00:03:41.940]The second day is reserved for our annual industry day.
- [00:03:45.200]The exciting thing about day two of NUBE is the opportunity
- [00:03:48.020]to see your major in action.
- [00:03:49.680]You'll see real project sites
- [00:03:51.050]or company locations, plus you'll get to network
- [00:03:53.430]with engineers who might even wanna talk
- [00:03:55.200]to you about internships.
- [00:03:56.890]NUBE is a great headstart, and it's completely free
- [00:03:59.280]so that everyone can take advantage of this opportunity.
- [00:04:01.990]Dates and sign-up information can be found on this slide.
- [00:04:04.790]Registration is just a quick, online form.
- [00:04:06.980]So head to our website as soon as you can
- [00:04:09.080]at nube.unl.edu.
- [00:04:16.500]Alma Ramirez-Rodgers
- [00:04:17.910]is the Senior Assistant Director of Student Development.
- [00:04:21.010]She specifically works with current student programming
- [00:04:23.630]and serves as a resource for our student organizations.
- [00:04:27.290]One of the opportunities she coordinates
- [00:04:29.130]is the Engineering Readiness Academy or ERA.
- [00:04:32.497]ERA is a one-week, residential bridge program,
- [00:04:35.910]designed to provide a head start
- [00:04:37.450]for incoming engineering
- [00:04:38.660]and construction management students.
- [00:04:40.930]ERA has many goals, but the primary goal
- [00:04:43.360]is to prepare students early for academic,
- [00:04:46.280]personal, and career success.
- [00:04:48.550]Not only will the program refresh students' math skills
- [00:04:52.540]through supplemental instruction,
- [00:04:54.990]but it will also help students get connected early
- [00:04:57.540]to their peers, faculty, and staff.
- [00:05:00.020]Please visit the link on the slide for more information
- [00:05:02.550]on the program, cost, and application details.
- [00:05:08.360]As new students, we highly recommend you get involved
- [00:05:10.900]outside the classroom.
- [00:05:12.410]This can include joining one
- [00:05:13.670]of our many College of Engineering student organizations,
- [00:05:16.250]in which several are listed on the slide.
- [00:05:18.880]Participating in UNO Signature Service Days
- [00:05:21.440]or joining us for the various activities scheduled
- [00:05:24.210]during the school year.
- [00:05:26.240]Several events are held in the first week of classes
- [00:05:28.720]during what is known as Welcome Week.
- [00:05:31.120]This week will include a PKI student organization
- [00:05:34.700]and resource fair that you are encouraged to attend
- [00:05:37.540]as this will provide you a chance
- [00:05:39.240]to meet current members of PKI organizations
- [00:05:42.030]and learn about involvement opportunities.
- [00:05:45.226]Resource offices will also be available to answer questions.
- [00:05:50.400]There are several benefits to getting involved on campus.
- [00:05:52.970]Some of these include helping you connect to campus
- [00:05:55.930]and build your community, hone skills that future employers
- [00:05:59.360]look for, i.e. good for the resume,
- [00:06:02.051]and provide students an opportunity
- [00:06:04.020]to discover their passions, strengths, and talents.
- [00:06:09.180]Whether you want to pursue graduate school,
- [00:06:11.240]work in industry, or otherwise,
- [00:06:13.040]Engineering Career Services supports you
- [00:06:15.040]on your individual path to success.
- [00:06:17.440]I'm Robia Qasimyar,
- [00:06:18.650]and I work on the Engineer Career Services team.
- [00:06:21.097]My role in the college is to support engineering
- [00:06:23.534]and construction students in all things career.
- [00:06:26.200]From one-on-one coaching appointments,
- [00:06:27.830]to planning events, to connecting you to industry
- [00:06:30.130]and future opportunities.
- [00:06:31.880]I also teach Engineering 200,
- [00:06:33.780]the Career Development Seminar,
- [00:06:34.952]and run the Durham School Career Fair.
- [00:06:38.650]The easiest way to get involved
- [00:06:39.930]with Career Services is to sign up
- [00:06:42.060]for a career coaching appointment.
- [00:06:43.681]I'll help you create or review your resume,
- [00:06:46.330]write a cover letter, plan a job search strategy,
- [00:06:49.090]and develop your interview skills.
- [00:06:51.120]Not sure how to answer questions like,
- [00:06:52.960]tell me about yourself?
- [00:06:54.350]What makes you unique?
- [00:06:55.460]Or why do you want to work for us?
- [00:06:57.630]I'm here to offer that support.
- [00:06:59.480]In Omaha, we also offer the Gallup Strengths Assessment
- [00:07:02.140]at no cost to students.
- [00:07:03.860]This is yet another way to grow self-awareness
- [00:07:06.020]and aid in your professional development.
- [00:07:08.650]Take these new skills and your updated resume
- [00:07:10.580]to a career fair to put your hard work into action.
- [00:07:13.560]Students may attend a variety of career fairs
- [00:07:15.880]throughout the year.
- [00:07:16.770]Most notably are the STEM Fairs,
- [00:07:18.474]the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fairs,
- [00:07:21.510]in Lincoln, and the Durham School Career Fair in Omaha,
- [00:07:24.380]which is tailored to architectural engineering,
- [00:07:26.240]civil engineering, and construction students.
- [00:07:28.950]A free shuttle runs from PKI, the Peter Kiewit Institute
- [00:07:32.368]to Lincoln, and the Durham School Career Fair
- [00:07:35.350]is just blocks away from PKI.
- [00:07:37.360]So you can find these fairs easily accessible.
- [00:07:40.970]I highly encourage underclassmen to attend
- [00:07:42.970]at least one career fair a year.
- [00:07:44.960]Whether you want an internship the summer
- [00:07:46.480]after your freshman year, which is a feasible goal,
- [00:07:49.071]or just want to see what's available in the future,
- [00:07:51.490]a fair is great way to learn how to market yourself
- [00:07:54.020]and chat with alumni and real-life engineers.
- [00:07:57.060]Finally, keep an eye out for career-related events
- [00:07:59.570]happening on campus throughout the year.
- [00:08:01.580]Employers will come and set up shop in the PKI atrium,
- [00:08:04.250]so you can stop by between classes.
- [00:08:06.220]And I'll host walk-in resume reviews in the building,
- [00:08:09.030]and a variety of other events
- [00:08:10.440]like industry mixers and workshops.
- [00:08:12.920]Simply read your email to stay on top of all the ways
- [00:08:15.190]to be connected and become prepared for the job search.
- [00:08:18.210]I truly believe your future career starts day one on campus.
- [00:08:21.690]The clubs you choose to join,
- [00:08:23.010]the internships you pursue,
- [00:08:24.480]and your first resume review are all building blocks
- [00:08:26.675]to your path to success.
- [00:08:29.256]Get involved, be active,
- [00:08:31.070]and remember, I'm always here to help.
- [00:08:35.810]Hello, I'm Garrett Gassman,
- [00:08:37.320]Director of Advising for the College of Engineering.
