- [00:00:13.780]Welcome to new student enrollment.
- [00:00:15.490]So today we want to talk to you a little bit
- [00:00:17.227]about the transition from high school to college,
- [00:00:20.060]specifically with regards to academics.
- [00:00:22.710]And to do that we brought here with us today,
- [00:00:24.670]Dr. Kathy Castle who is
- [00:00:26.700]from the Communications Studies department.
- [00:00:28.724]Happy to be here with you, An.
- [00:00:34.620]So starting college can be really exciting,
- [00:00:37.430]but also kind of scary at the same time,
- [00:00:39.360]just because all of the experiences that you have
- [00:00:42.000]and all of the expectations, they just change a lot
- [00:00:45.180]from college to high school.
- [00:00:46.840]A big example of this is time management.
- [00:00:49.340]So in high school, you have
- [00:00:51.490]a lot of your classes outlined for you,
- [00:00:53.140]you're going through the same routine every day,
- [00:00:55.050]even your extracurriculars
- [00:00:56.290]are pretty much the same every day.
- [00:00:58.460]But coming to college you kind of have to
- [00:01:00.020]do that all for yourself without the help
- [00:01:02.030]of a teacher or parent the entire time.
- [00:01:04.675]So how would you describe the differences
- [00:01:08.170]between high school and college structure?
- [00:01:11.080]I think one of the biggest differences
- [00:01:12.570]between the structure of a high school day and a college day
- [00:01:15.320]is the gap of time that you often find yourself with
- [00:01:18.540]between your classes.
- [00:01:19.820]So in high school, you're going from class to class
- [00:01:21.880]and as you mention, things are really structured,
- [00:01:24.040]but when you get into the college environment,
- [00:01:26.160]you have this gap of time that you can choose to use
- [00:01:30.350]in a lot of different ways.
- [00:01:31.630]And so using it in order to help you get further
- [00:01:34.840]in your classes and work on your school work
- [00:01:36.900]is really one of the challenges that students have
- [00:01:39.130]because it feels like suddenly we're free,
- [00:01:41.920]but that time is really valuable
- [00:01:43.890]for students to use in that way.
- [00:01:45.640]So, it's recognizing what needs to be done
- [00:01:47.430]and how much time you need to accomplish that goal.
- [00:01:51.060]That's a good point because now students are in college,
- [00:01:54.540]they want more free time and they are able
- [00:01:56.550]to make those decisions for themselves
- [00:01:57.940]without the guidance of a parent or a teacher around,
- [00:02:01.070]but as students, how do they make the most
- [00:02:03.870]out of their free time and use it wisely?
- [00:02:06.280]So I think the first thing I would suggest students do
- [00:02:09.190]is take a hard look at due dates
- [00:02:11.380]and take a look at all the things
- [00:02:12.600]that they have going on across all their classes
- [00:02:15.020]and put together a master calendar of due dates
- [00:02:18.160]and projected amount of time
- [00:02:20.320]that they may need to complete things.
- [00:02:22.330]It helps them to get a really good clear picture
- [00:02:24.680]of the things that are due for the semester
- [00:02:26.760]and they can plan their time out from there.
- [00:02:28.870]It's also important for students to keep in mind
- [00:02:30.930]that in college, 80% of the work that they're gonna do
- [00:02:33.811]falls outside the classroom environment.
- [00:02:36.440]Whereas in high school,
- [00:02:37.273]sometimes you have time in class to work on things,
- [00:02:39.730]in college, that's not the case
- [00:02:42.070]so you have to allow for that time outside of class.
- [00:02:44.880]I know my first year I really struggled a lot
- [00:02:47.200]with using a planner.
- [00:02:48.590]It just was not the method for me.
- [00:02:50.392]And I talked to a faculty member about it
- [00:02:52.850]and she actually gave me some suggestions
- [00:02:54.440]for different ways it would work.
- [00:02:56.380]And I'm still kinda messing around with them
- [00:02:58.160]and seeing what works best for me
- [00:02:59.420]because everyone uses a different method.
- [00:03:05.960]The next thing that I kind of want to discuss is,
- [00:03:08.590]I believe that there's kind of a myth
- [00:03:10.440]around the difference between college professors
- [00:03:13.490]and high school teachers
- [00:03:14.768]and some people find coming to college
- [00:03:17.160]that the professors are unapproachable
- [00:03:19.670]or maybe a little intimidating
- [00:03:21.570]and personally, I've never had a bad interaction
- [00:03:24.130]with a faculty member.
- [00:03:25.390]Sure, I didn't have a very close connection
- [00:03:27.370]with every single one of them,
- [00:03:28.540]but I can tell that every one of them cared
- [00:03:30.850]about teaching students.
- [00:03:33.240]So, from your perspective,
- [00:03:36.010]how do you view your interactions with students?
- [00:03:39.070]We don't want to see you fall behind
- [00:03:40.700]so emailing us, keeping up on top of things,
- [00:03:43.500]stopping by office hours, getting the help you need,
- [00:03:46.440]helps us know that you are engaged.
- [00:03:52.950]So, you'll often hear in college
- [00:03:54.730]that going over the syllabus is a great way
- [00:03:56.760]to set yourself for success in a class.
- [00:03:59.100]Can you tell me a little more
- [00:04:00.090]about what a syllabus is exactly?
- [00:04:02.380]A syllabus is basically a contract
- [00:04:05.550]that professors create in their classes to help students see
- [00:04:09.580]what we're gonna be covering, what's the content,
- [00:04:11.820]when are things gonna be due,
- [00:04:12.990]what are the policies of the class?
- [00:04:15.020]Which some students are surprised to learn,
- [00:04:16.980]may differ from one class to another.
- [00:04:19.210]So when you're in a class,
- [00:04:21.040]one of the things that you'll need to do
- [00:04:22.810]is make sure that you are comfortable and familiar
- [00:04:24.520]with course policies and expectations.
- [00:04:26.978]The syllabus lays all of that out
- [00:04:29.270]and I would encourage any student
- [00:04:31.100]who's reviewing a syllabus who has questions,
- [00:04:33.010]to be sure they're asking those questions early in a class.
- [00:04:36.180]As you look at the syllabus,
- [00:04:37.770]you're gonna see policies around different things
- [00:04:39.960]like a late assignment policy.
- [00:04:42.560]I know sometimes in high school,
- [00:04:44.170]it's normal for a student to maybe be able
- [00:04:47.290]to turn some work in late.
- [00:04:49.150]In college, you may have some professors
- [00:04:51.870]that are comfortable with accepting late work
- [00:04:53.450]with a penalty up to a certain date
- [00:04:55.430]and you may have others that will not accept late work.
- [00:04:58.470]So it's really important for you
- [00:04:59.810]to understand policies like that and how they're different,
- [00:05:03.000]from not only high school,
- [00:05:04.140]but from one class to the other.
- [00:05:06.030]So the syllabus is a really important document
- [00:05:08.960]for a student to pay attention to
- [00:05:10.540]and refer to throughout the semester.
