- [00:00:08.520]Hi friends, it's a beautiful day here
- [00:00:10.500]at Buttin' Buck Farms in Northeast Nebraska.
- [00:00:13.280]I have some really awesome friends
- [00:00:15.460]to introduce you to today.
- [00:00:17.110]Would you like to see?
- [00:00:18.800]So, these are the goats in my herd.
- [00:00:20.666]A group of goats is called a herd,
- [00:00:22.820]or you can also call them a tribe.
- [00:00:25.160]So, one of my friends sent me
- [00:00:27.600]a couple of questions about being a goat farmer.
- [00:00:30.960]The first question is,
- [00:00:32.227]"how many types of goats are there
- [00:00:34.050]on a farm?".
- [00:00:35.275]Well, it depends.
- [00:00:36.996]So, there's 3 different types of goats.
- [00:00:39.530]Either dairy goats, meat goats, or fiber goats.
- [00:00:42.796]But there's over 200 different domestic breeds.
- [00:00:46.760]So, the goats that I have here...
- [00:00:48.960]This one right here, here name is Gretel.
- [00:00:52.380]This one is Poncho.
- [00:00:56.020]This is Anna right here.
- [00:00:57.453]And then, her 2 babies back in the back.
- [00:01:03.412]And then, the spotted one is Coco.
- [00:01:06.680]The one behind her, his name is Bear.
- [00:01:10.693]And then we have Stevie.
- [00:01:15.150]And the last one is Buckley.
- [00:01:19.300]So, one of the other questions was,
- [00:01:21.127]"what is a farmer's favorite part
- [00:01:22.830]about taking care of goats?".
- [00:01:24.720]I would say, my favorite part
- [00:01:26.557]is just watching them, because they're very smart,
- [00:01:30.090]which means they are also very curious,
- [00:01:33.270]so that sometimes gets them into trouble.
- [00:01:35.986]They are very agile and like to climb,
- [00:01:39.240]so they can jump over fences
- [00:01:40.930]and jump up onto things.
- [00:01:43.030]So, if you see over here, we have a spool
- [00:01:45.250]and that is something that they use to play on.
- [00:01:47.630]They like to jump on and off of it.
- [00:01:50.370]So, one of the other questions is,
- [00:01:52.587]"do goats really do yoga?".
- [00:01:53.878]Well, like I said, they like to jump and climb
- [00:01:56.310]so it's possible that they could do yoga,
- [00:01:58.230]but I wouldn't want a goat jumping up on top of me.
- [00:02:05.000]So, I brought some treats out
- [00:02:07.020]for our goats today.
- [00:02:08.950]And goats, just like other herbivores,
- [00:02:11.010]which means they only eat plants,
- [00:02:13.310]I brought them some green beans.
- [00:02:16.750]This is one of their favorite treats.
- [00:02:19.160]So we'll go ahead and feed our goats.
- [00:02:23.204](goats munching)
- [00:02:35.518]Anna is kind of,
- [00:02:37.690]she likes to get there first.
- [00:02:44.153]Here you go, Bear.
- [00:02:45.930]Here you go, Poncho.
- [00:02:50.650]Here you go, Stevie.
- [00:02:54.067](goats munching)
- [00:03:02.837]So, the goats that I have,
- [00:03:03.670]this one right here, Anna, she is a milk goat.
- [00:03:06.450]And then Stevie, back over there in the back,
- [00:03:09.010]she's a pygmy goat.
- [00:03:11.640]Poncho, he is our,
- [00:03:14.120]he's our buck.
- [00:03:14.953]So that means he is a boy
- [00:03:16.560]and he is kind of the king of the herd here.
- [00:03:23.470]One misconception about goats
- [00:03:25.050]is that they eat everything.
- [00:03:26.960]So, actually what they're doing
- [00:03:28.270]is tasting everything.
- [00:03:29.800]They're actually pretty picky eaters.
- [00:03:31.500]So, as you can see out in the field right now,
- [00:03:33.440]they have rye grass that's growing.
- [00:03:35.780]But they like to forage, so they will
- [00:03:37.900]eat your weeds and flowers and other things.
- [00:03:40.112]But they like fruits and vegetables
- [00:03:41.790]just like other herbivores.
- [00:03:43.650]So, they only eat plants, they do not eat meat.
- [00:03:45.802]But, like I said, they are
- [00:03:47.410]very picky about what they eat.
- [00:03:48.803]They don't like to eat things that are dirty,
- [00:03:51.520]things that have been on the ground for too long.
- [00:03:53.786]So, whenever they're trying to eat
- [00:03:56.034]what you see, like cardboard or paper,
- [00:03:58.740]really what they're doing is just
- [00:03:59.920]tasting it to see what it is.
- [00:04:01.757](wind blowing)
- [00:04:05.488]We have lots of animals
- [00:04:07.090]here at Buttin' Buck Farms.
- [00:04:08.866]We have one of our cats, Lucky.
- [00:04:13.750]And our dog, Walker.
- [00:04:18.100]And his mom, Reba.
- [00:04:20.950]Reba is an Australian Shepherd
- [00:04:25.420]and Walker is an Australian Shepherd
- [00:04:27.400]mixed with a German Shorthair.
- [00:04:29.510](wind blowing)
- [00:04:34.063]Can you say hi to the goats?
- [00:04:36.860]Hi Stevie.
- [00:04:38.978]Hi.
- [00:04:43.690]Do you say hi?
- [00:04:45.700]Wave to Poncho.
- [00:04:47.332](laughing)
- [00:04:48.510]It's okay, it's okay.
- [00:04:51.898]Well, thanks for joining us today
- [00:04:54.200]at Buttin' Buck Farms.
- [00:04:55.360]I hope that you've enjoyed watching the goats.
- [00:04:57.713]And, hopefully we'll do some videos in the future.
- [00:05:02.530]Have a beautiful day.
