- [00:00:00.420]Welcome to the College of Journalism
- [00:00:01.880]and Mass Communications.
- [00:00:03.250]My name is Bridgett Grant.
- [00:00:05.029]And I'm Andrea Gaghagen.
- [00:00:06.970]And I'm Anne McKonkey.
- [00:00:09.540]We are the three advisers in the CoJMC.
- [00:00:12.440]And we have prepared a little video presentation for you
- [00:00:15.870]to just help you give some quick information
- [00:00:17.870]and prepare you for your upcoming
- [00:00:19.250]NSE advising appointment.
- [00:00:21.980]We are so thrilled to welcome you
- [00:00:23.790]to the CoJMC family, class of 2024.
- [00:00:29.830]We are so excited to have you,
- [00:00:32.440]and it's exciting that you are about ready
- [00:00:35.030]to start on this new part of your journey.
- [00:00:38.640]You're coming to college, and we want you to remember
- [00:00:41.570]that your college experience is your college experience.
- [00:00:45.670]We want you to own it.
- [00:00:47.360]Because remember, it's your degree that you're earning.
- [00:00:50.320]It's your experience, and ultimately it's your future.
- [00:00:55.190]So we want to help you learn how to take responsibility
- [00:00:59.380]for what happens, and your experience here at UNL.
- [00:01:05.130]The four majors in the CoJMC
- [00:01:07.210]are advertising and public relations,
- [00:01:09.770]broadcasting, journalism,
- [00:01:12.090]and sports media and communication.
- [00:01:14.070]Regardless of which major you choose,
- [00:01:16.060]your college degree will say bachelor of journalism.
- [00:01:21.810]Some of you may be wondering how many credits it takes
- [00:01:24.790]to earn that bachelor of journalism degree.
- [00:01:27.950]It takes 120 credit hours minimum
- [00:01:31.520]to earn your degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:34.590]If you divide that into eight semesters,
- [00:01:36.470]that's roughly 15 credits a semester.
- [00:01:40.100]Therefore, for your first semester this fall,
- [00:01:43.000]you will be enrolling in 14-17 credits.
- [00:01:47.260]You'll decide how many exact credits
- [00:01:49.850]that you'll be taking when you meet with your adviser,
- [00:01:52.940]one of the three of us, one-on-one in the near future.
- [00:01:59.420]So let's talk about what those 120 credit hours
- [00:02:03.460]are made up of.
- [00:02:05.870]43 of them are gonna be your major requirements,
- [00:02:09.070]so the courses that are gonna make up your major.
- [00:02:12.760]The remaining 77 credits are the other degree requirements.
- [00:02:17.440]And that's going to be ACEs which are basically
- [00:02:20.010]general studies course that we'll mention in a moment,
- [00:02:23.800]a minor, which we will also talk about,
- [00:02:26.970]any language you might need,
- [00:02:29.130]and electives that you may need.
- [00:02:34.220]As Anne just mentioned, the ACE requirements
- [00:02:36.580]are part of the other degree requirements.
- [00:02:39.060]And something that I want to mention
- [00:02:40.670]is that all College of Journalism Students
- [00:02:42.980]are required to take two sets of their ACEs.
- [00:02:45.780]So that will mean two writing classes,
- [00:02:48.350]two communication classes, two math classes, and so on.
- [00:02:52.550]We will talk about each of these nine ACEs in more detail
- [00:02:56.640]in your upcoming advising appointments.
- [00:02:58.550]Something I do want to mention
- [00:03:00.180]is that you'll have the opportunity
- [00:03:02.200]to look through all of the ACE classes
- [00:03:04.290]for this upcoming fall, and you can choose
- [00:03:06.967]the ones that you're interested in,
- [00:03:08.840]and put those down in your advising inventory.
- [00:03:11.970]And this will help us, in your advising appointment
- [00:03:14.530]when it comes time to pick out your classes.
- [00:03:20.200]Anne had also mentioned that foreign language
- [00:03:22.380]may be part of your college career in order to graduate.
- [00:03:29.533]If you did not take four years of foreign language
- [00:03:32.980]in high school, you will have to take foreign language
- [00:03:35.240]in order to complete your degree here at UNL.
- [00:03:38.000]If you start a brand new language,
- [00:03:39.870]you start in the very basic 101 class,
- [00:03:42.380]and you can choose any language that you see on this list.
- [00:03:46.840]If you want to continue with the language
- [00:03:48.860]that you learned in high school,
- [00:03:50.440]you'll want to take the language placement exam
- [00:03:53.000]before your NSE one-on-one meeting with your adviser
- [00:03:56.910]to make sure that we know where to place you
- [00:03:59.220]along the sequence you see in that first sequence.
- [00:04:04.250]If you stick with the same language in high school,
- [00:04:06.750]you're gonna have to go a little bit further
- [00:04:08.530]into the intermediate level of foreign language at UNL.
- [00:04:12.680]If you choose a new language,
- [00:04:14.520]you just do the two beginning classes.
- [00:04:17.060]So this is something to keep in mind,
- [00:04:18.530]and something to think about before you have
- [00:04:20.770]your one-on-one appointment with your adviser.
- [00:04:26.560]All CoJMC students are required to declare a minor.
- [00:04:31.660]A minor is typically about 18 credits.
- [00:04:34.810]So that's gonna be six additional courses.
- [00:04:39.100]Some of you may have an idea
- [00:04:40.410]of what you might like to minor in, which is great.
- [00:04:42.670]Many of you may not.
- [00:04:44.580]That's one of the things that we, as your advisers
- [00:04:46.960]will help you with.
- [00:04:48.180]We'll help you go through the undergraduate catalog,
- [00:04:50.900]answer any questions you have,
- [00:04:52.390]as you're exploring what minor you want to declare.
- [00:04:55.250]We encourage you to have that declared
- [00:04:57.690]around the first semester of your sophomore year
- [00:04:59.890]so that you can get started on taking those courses.
- [00:05:02.930]The list that you see, are just a small handful
- [00:05:07.240]of minors that UNL offers.
- [00:05:09.760]But of course, there are many more.
- [00:05:12.010]Some of the more common ones that our students minor in
- [00:05:16.840]are English, music technology, leadership and communication,
- [00:05:21.300]business, psychology, communication studies,
- [00:05:24.980]and hospitality, restaurant and tourism management.
- [00:05:28.130]But again, there are many, many more.
- [00:05:30.250]And we want you to find a minor that you enjoy,
- [00:05:33.290]and that you feel would enhance your major
- [00:05:35.670]here at the CoJNC.
- [00:05:40.580]Beyond helping you pick out the right courses for you,
- [00:05:44.030]we, as your academic adviser
- [00:05:45.640]can help you with many more things.
- [00:05:47.440]If you have any questions or concerns
- [00:05:49.190]regarding your major or minor, adding an additional course,
- [00:05:52.410]or dropping a class, you have transfer credit
- [00:05:54.900]that you need to have put into your degree audit,
- [00:05:57.860]we also help you plan the path to your graduation.
- [00:06:00.670]And if you're planning on studying abroad,
- [00:06:02.410]that's also something that we can help you plan.
- [00:06:04.900]This is just a short list of the things that we do.
- [00:06:06.810]So if you ever do have any questions or concerns,
- [00:06:09.920]please don't hesitate to reach out
- [00:06:10.910]to your academic adviser, we're always ready
- [00:06:13.010]and happy to help you.
- [00:06:17.410]Ultimately, communication is going to be the key
- [00:06:20.290]to your success while you're in college.
- [00:06:23.200]We've talked about a lot of different degree requirements,
- [00:06:26.060]and it may seem confusing to you,
- [00:06:27.710]but that's why we're here, we're here to help you.
- [00:06:30.680]But we need you to communicate with us
- [00:06:32.770]when you are feeling confused, concerned,
- [00:06:35.490]or excited about something.
- [00:06:38.580]You can communicate with your academic adviser
- [00:06:40.570]as much as you need to.
- [00:06:42.940]That might be on a weekly basis for you.
- [00:06:44.550]That might be once a semester for you.
- [00:06:46.310]Everybody has their own...
- [00:06:49.830]timeline for when they want to reach out to their adviser.
- [00:06:52.320]But again, we're here to help you.
- [00:06:53.877]You also need to communicate with your instructors.
- [00:06:56.670]Please do so as many times as you need to.
- [00:06:59.240]Your instructors love to hear from you,
- [00:07:01.890]especially outside of class.
- [00:07:03.260]They're there to help you, but they need to know
- [00:07:06.160]when something might not be going as you had hoped,
- [00:07:09.960]or when you have questions about anything.
- [00:07:13.580]Communication is part of owning your experience.
- [00:07:17.070]If you have any questions,
- [00:07:18.920]if your parents have any questions,
- [00:07:20.440]we welcome those questions at any point.
- [00:07:23.320]We want you to communicate with us as much as you can.
- [00:07:31.340]We want to cover FERPA for just one moment.
- [00:07:33.980]Most of you know, or have heard about FERPA.
- [00:07:36.410]It's the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
- [00:07:39.530]This is a set of laws that was established
- [00:07:41.850]specifically to protect your privacy.
- [00:07:45.428]Again, as part of owning your experience here at UNL,
- [00:07:50.280]you are going to be in control of your educational record.
- [00:07:54.110]Which means that although advisers, and instructors
- [00:07:57.570]and administrators may have access
- [00:08:00.730]to your educational records, like grades and GPA,
- [00:08:05.380]they cannot share that information with anyone
- [00:08:08.250]including your parents, guardians, and family,
- [00:08:11.580]unless you have provided written consent.
- [00:08:16.012]If you have interest in discussing that more,
- [00:08:18.650]we will certainly do that with you
- [00:08:20.800]at your individual advising appointment.
- [00:08:23.710]And we have forms that you can fill out
- [00:08:26.490]in order to provide that consent to your family
- [00:08:30.740]so that we can talk with them,
- [00:08:32.730]if they have questions about your educational records.
- [00:08:39.850]We want to encourage you
- [00:08:41.050]to connect with us on social media.
- [00:08:43.700]You can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
- [00:08:46.680]But please take time to look
- [00:08:48.610]through our social media accounts
- [00:08:50.010]to get a feel for our college culture.
- [00:08:52.420]You don't want to miss out on opportunities
- [00:08:54.600]with internships, scholarships, or anything else.
- [00:08:58.350]So please make sure that you follow us on social media.
- [00:09:04.090]Thank you for taking the time
- [00:09:06.950]to watch our little presentation and listen to our video.
- [00:09:10.800]We're all very excited to meet with you
- [00:09:13.250]and talk to you about your upcoming fall schedule
- [00:09:15.840]in the next couple weeks.
- [00:09:17.530]And we can't wait to help advise you.
- [00:09:21.020]Yes, we are really looking forward
- [00:09:23.050]to meeting each and every one of you, very soon.
- [00:09:26.810]Welcome to the CoJMC family.
