- [00:00:01.472]In my teaching, I always try to show,
- [00:00:04.710]as many real world examples as possible.
- [00:00:08.000]But I found not all of them were
- [00:00:10.520]interesting to students, especially in my
- [00:00:12.920]fluid mechanics class.
- [00:00:14.610]So I thought about using non-traditional
- [00:00:17.270]and even funnier example, to engage and
- [00:00:20.750]stimulate more students.
- [00:00:22.350]Because I like watching anime,
- [00:00:24.320]so I naturally started using anime.
- [00:00:27.070]I started using anime examples
- [00:00:28.725]in the spring semester of 2015,
- [00:00:32.330]so it has been 5 years.
- [00:00:34.050]Typically I use anime examples
- [00:00:36.630]in my undergraduate level classes,
- [00:00:39.560]because those classes are large classes.
- [00:00:42.250]Using these anime or non-traditional examples,
- [00:00:46.330]is really effective in drawing students attention,
- [00:00:49.920]in such a large class.
- [00:00:51.950]I really enjoy, think about
- [00:00:55.810]the science and engineering feasibility
- [00:00:58.150]of the concept presented in those
- [00:01:00.250]SF movies, anime and manga.
- [00:01:03.330]So, whenever I find an interesting example,
- [00:01:07.160]I write it down in my list of
- [00:01:09.650]non-traditional examples
- [00:01:11.050]with a related engineering question,
- [00:01:14.084]and brief answers.
- [00:01:15.850]So whenever I need a new example,
- [00:01:17.880]I look into my list and then find one.
- [00:01:20.160]It is really important to provide students
- [00:01:24.590]with a context and background of those examples..
- [00:01:28.648]For example, sometimes I use Ant-Man,
- [00:01:31.760]one of Marvel heroes, to explain the concept
- [00:01:34.870]of mass conservation, density and
- [00:01:37.440]of Brownian motions.
- [00:01:39.260]But not all students know about Ant-man,
- [00:01:42.160]so whenever I use that example,
- [00:01:43.980]I need to briefly explain what this story about. ,
- [00:01:47.290]then students can understand the background,
- [00:01:49.970]and then why I used that kind of example.
- [00:01:52.638]I think the students can feel passion,
- [00:01:55.502]of your passion, in your choice of
- [00:01:59.950]pop culture.
- [00:02:01.170]Yeah, I'd like to quote words from students.
- [00:02:03.930]So this is my recent paper,
- [00:02:06.440]on using anime for fluid mechanics teaching
- [00:02:09.430]and for this paper,
- [00:02:10.720]I asked students in my classroom,
- [00:02:14.180]what they felt and thought about my anime examples .
- [00:02:17.467]"It was enjoyable and gave a good example
- [00:02:20.290]to practice making reasonable assumptions
- [00:02:23.566]around a real world application."
- [00:02:26.397]"Helped me maintain attention
- [00:02:28.000]and showed practical application of a theory."
- [00:02:31.067]"I think they helped me understand
- [00:02:33.100]the concept better because it is
- [00:02:34.992]more intriguing than just equations."
- [00:02:37.458]"I seem to pay attention better."
- [00:02:39.695]And this is last one.
- [00:02:41.667]"I thought that the anime examples were very intriguing.
- [00:02:44.855]It made the learning fun and interesting,
- [00:02:47.750]which does not happen a lot in engineering."
- [00:02:50.180]Excellent teachers put themselves
- [00:02:52.400]in students shoes.
- [00:02:53.816]So they think about their teaching
- [00:02:56.810]from the perspective of students.
- [00:02:59.110]Also they learn the effectiveness
- [00:03:01.330]of their teaching from students,
- [00:03:02.438]so that they can improve their teaching.
