- [00:00:02.140]One of the biggest challenges is student engagement.
- [00:00:05.800]And building community within the classroom and having
- [00:00:09.190]that online presence. Not only, myself, but also creating
- [00:00:13.395]within the student body within the class.
- [00:00:16.650]When I fist started teaching about 29 years ago.
- [00:00:19.600]I didn't know any better. That's how I was taught by my
- [00:00:22.910]professors and I was very instructive
- [00:00:26.120]And I was on autopilot and I was just
- [00:00:29.230]ready to transmit knowledge.
- [00:00:31.900]And over the years I've come to realize that teaching
- [00:00:35.300]in general either teaching in the classroom or online,
- [00:00:38.740]it has to be interactive for the students to really dive
- [00:00:41.990]deep in and internalize the material and get active and be
- [00:00:45.980]engaged in it. I read a lot about online teaching and
- [00:00:50.020]teaching in general. So, several subscriptions, there is,
- [00:00:54.860]the Chronical of Higher Education, of course is the bible of
- [00:00:57.500]higher education. So, I read those article all the time.
- [00:01:01.170]Then there is Faculty Focus, a couple of news letters
- [00:01:04.690]on teaching and then they have online teaching components
- [00:01:07.930]in them. So, one is free, Faculty Focus. The other one is
- [00:01:13.000]the Teaching Professor, it is a paid subscription.
- [00:01:15.440]Memberships in USDLA, the United States Distance Learning
- [00:01:19.010]Association or OLC which is the Online Learning Consortium.
- [00:01:23.220]Working with instructional designers and members of ECEC is
- [00:01:26.630]a must. I would thing not only for online classes but for
- [00:01:30.900]any kind of teaching. Instruction designers are great
- [00:01:33.830]you need to use your instructional designers.
- [00:01:37.060]I use midterm surveys and end of the course evals to
- [00:01:40.210]improve my teaching and then technology. The use of
- [00:01:43.630]technology, not only what is available though
- [00:01:46.290]the university, like VidGrid or Zoom or technologies
- [00:01:51.250]like that but also just use of technology in the classroom.
- [00:01:54.760]Like, blogs, or podcasts, or anything that you can use
- [00:01:59.660]to energize the course and content. Using video capture
- [00:02:04.560]technology, I always create what I call "Tour de Class"
- [00:02:10.400]with Dr. Jay and I literally take the students though
- [00:02:14.350]how to navigate the course how to find their way around
- [00:02:18.090]where is everything so that that stress of being in an
- [00:02:22.650]online class can be alleviated some. And then discussion,
- [00:02:27.431]use discussions as, subscribe to them and tell your
- [00:02:31.590]students to subscribe to them so that you can answer
- [00:02:34.800]questions all at once. Rather than sitting in your office
- [00:02:37.730]and one at a time students come, you can have a
- [00:02:40.982]discussion going on and for every one question that someone
- [00:02:45.530]asks you there is probably at least 5 or 10 other
- [00:02:47.950]students who have the same question. So, why not optimize
- [00:02:51.825]time and minimize unnecessary interactions.
- [00:02:56.250]Personally, I am always trying to learn new things when it
- [00:02:59.610]comes to teaching, when it comes to online teaching and
- [00:03:02.600]when it comes to the subject matter. So, have that passion
- [00:03:05.950]for learning so that you can infuse that into your
- [00:03:08.930]courses and make your courses and your delivery and
- [00:03:11.950]interactions with the students better. There is always
- [00:03:15.400]new strategies that are created and those are all helpful.
- [00:03:19.730]So, push yourself outside of your comfort zone so that
- [00:03:23.640]you can do better in the classroom and
- [00:03:25.380]you can be more affective.
