- [00:00:07.380]I'm the director of the University Honors Program.
- [00:00:10.660]Although we cannot be in person today,
- [00:00:13.070]I want to offer you my heartfelt congratulations.
- [00:00:17.500]On behalf of the Honors Program
- [00:00:19.440]and all the staff and faculty
- [00:00:21.420]who have worked so closely with you, I say, job well done.
- [00:00:26.960]You should know that I also have a daughter
- [00:00:29.440]who is graduating from university this year.
- [00:00:32.090]And as a parent, I can tell you
- [00:00:34.390]that I was really looking forward
- [00:00:36.470]to watching her across the stage.
- [00:00:38.970]Whether you realize this or not, this is something
- [00:00:42.210]that most parents look forward to, and cherish.
- [00:00:46.130]Although you will not have that opportunity today,
- [00:00:50.700]do take some time to celebrate your many accomplishments,
- [00:00:54.310]your hard work, and the family and friends
- [00:00:57.150]who have helped you along the way.
- [00:00:59.400]By distinguishing yourself in the Honors Program,
- [00:01:02.410]you demonstrated that you are smart,
- [00:01:05.280]you are hardworking, and you know how to persevere.
- [00:01:09.670]And as we know from our recent challenges,
- [00:01:12.400]and the surprises that have been pushed on us,
- [00:01:15.280]hard work and perseverance matter a lot.

- [00:03:05.760]A graduating not just from the University of Nebraska,
- [00:03:09.400]which is a notable feat in its own right,
- [00:03:12.430]but also from the University Honors Program,
- [00:03:16.000]each of you have demonstrated a level of commitment
- [00:03:19.330]and dedication to going above and beyond
- [00:03:22.080]that will serve you well in the future.
- [00:03:24.740]Regardless of what challenges that future might hold.
- [00:03:29.130]Individually, you can each claim numerous achievements,
- [00:03:33.270]awards and successes,
- [00:03:35.740]but combined, we are awed
- [00:03:39.070]by what you as a class have accomplished.
- [00:03:43.070]This class is comprised of 177 graduating seniors,
- [00:03:49.247]the largest group to ever graduate
- [00:03:51.540]from the University Honors Program in a single term.
- [00:03:55.650]On Saturday, May 9th, you will earn 193 separate degrees,
- [00:04:01.560]142 of those degrees, or a whopping 73%,
- [00:04:07.630]will be earned with distinction,
- [00:04:09.830]high distinction, or highest distinction.
- [00:04:14.150]Your collective college GPA is 3.84, which you have earned
- [00:04:19.690]while completing over 24,000 college credit hours,
- [00:04:25.450]over 5,700 of which were honors hours.
- [00:04:29.830]Among you and your peers, 33 of you are members
- [00:04:34.180]of highly competitive senior honor societies,
- [00:04:37.750]including Innocents, Mortar Board, and Omnicom Delta Kappa.
- [00:04:43.020]16 of you have maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA
- [00:04:47.120]throughout college.
- [00:04:49.180]Three of you have been recognized
- [00:04:51.280]as student luminaries on our campus,
- [00:04:53.810]standing out among all students
- [00:04:56.310]for exceptional leadership and extraordinary commitment
- [00:05:00.010]to improving the campus and community
- [00:05:03.000]while excelling in academic pursuits.
- [00:05:06.510]Several of you have earned highly selective
- [00:05:09.020]and prestigious national awards,
- [00:05:11.720]all of which are chosen from among applicants

- [00:05:21.800]to represent the United States
- [00:05:23.850]in Spain and Bulgaria next year.

- [00:05:31.900]in South Korea and Georgia, respectively.
- [00:05:35.810]Three Goldwater Scholarships,
- [00:05:38.290]recognizing students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity
- [00:05:42.000]and intensity and who possess the potential
- [00:05:44.790]for significant contributions to mathematics or science.
- [00:05:50.560]And one Truman Scholarship,
- [00:05:53.520]only the 17th in the university's history.
- [00:05:57.460]The Truman Scholarship
- [00:05:58.640]is the most competitive American fellowship
- [00:06:01.890]to support graduate study and leadership development.
- [00:06:06.390]Collectively, you are the authors
- [00:06:08.660]of 177 honors senior projects and theses
- [00:06:14.050]on a wide variety of topics,
- [00:06:16.500]ranging from treatments for children with autism,
- [00:06:21.060]the ways that different family communication styles
- [00:06:23.770]affect financial literacy,
- [00:06:26.420]factors influencing the diets of sea otters,
- [00:06:31.300]strategies to increase motivation to learn
- [00:06:34.140]in mathematics classrooms.
- [00:06:37.250]These accomplishments are just the tip of the iceberg.
- [00:06:40.670]You all have earned countless honors, awards,
- [00:06:43.900]and recognitions of which you should be proud.
- [00:06:47.300]We are certainly proud of you.

- [00:07:14.820]Graduate schools to which you have been admitted,

- [00:07:21.260]UC Berkeley, Purdue, Arizona State, and Nebraska.

- [00:07:30.600]Northwestern, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
- [00:07:34.530]And healthcare fields in which you will begin training
- [00:07:37.950]include traditional medicine, physician's assistant,
- [00:07:41.530]physical therapy, chiropractic, dentistry,
- [00:07:45.170]and clinical psychology.
- [00:07:48.230]53% of you have a job lined up and waiting for you
- [00:07:51.540]in your career field.
- [00:07:54.090]And an additional 3%
- [00:07:55.810]have work plans outside of your career field.
- [00:07:59.260]You will begin your careers working for companies
- [00:08:02.060]and agencies including Microsoft, US Bank,
- [00:08:05.880]Mutual of Omaha, Emeritus, Facebook, Google,
- [00:08:09.810]Deloitte, the US Park Service,
- [00:08:12.750]Lincoln Public Schools, all state Garmin,
- [00:08:15.740]Lincoln Financial Group,
- [00:08:17.190]Ernst & Young and Omaha Performing Arts.
- [00:08:21.610]10% of you have plans to volunteer, work, or travel abroad,
- [00:08:26.410]as soon as that becomes possible.
- [00:08:29.730]5% of you have committed to military service,
- [00:08:33.380]religious service, or a civil service program,
- [00:08:36.520]like Teach for America, or the Peace Corps
- [00:08:39.350]for the next chapter in your story.
- [00:08:42.400]Now, some of you are doing more than one of these things.
- [00:08:45.820]We know because if you add up all of those percentages,
- [00:08:49.080]you get 119%.
- [00:08:52.660]But that's an apt figure.
- [00:08:55.100]You've certainly given at least that much effort
- [00:08:57.300]and dedication to your college years.
- [00:09:00.710]We have no doubts that you will continue to be as incredible
- [00:09:04.500]as accomplished, and as amazing
- [00:09:06.850]in the next stage of your life.
