- [00:00:01.810]Hello, my name is Peyton Walker,
- [00:00:03.520]and I am a current Well-Being Peer Coach
- [00:00:05.800]with Big Red Resilience and Well-Being.
- [00:00:08.350]Today's topic is expressing gratitude.
- [00:00:11.620]Gratitude has been very influential to me in my life,
- [00:00:15.280]as practicing gratitude helps me to see the positive
- [00:00:18.100]of every situation.
- [00:00:21.280]Through the work of leading researchers
- [00:00:23.410]like Robert Emmons and Martin Seligman,
- [00:00:26.780]we know that this virtue
- [00:00:27.940]is more than just saying, "Thank you."
- [00:00:30.670]There are many ways that you can practice gratitude,
- [00:00:33.120]like the three ways named here:
- [00:00:34.900]sending a thank you note daily,
- [00:00:36.920]writing down three things that you are thankful for daily,
- [00:00:39.970]or keeping a daily gratitude journal.
- [00:00:42.500]The most important thing is that you practice gratitude
- [00:00:45.020]in every way someday, in every day in some way.
- [00:00:49.650]For me personally, I have kept a gratitude journal
- [00:00:52.320]for two and a half years now,
- [00:00:54.760]and at the end of every day right before I go to bed,
- [00:00:57.620]I write down one thing that I'm most grateful for
- [00:01:00.520]from that specific day.
- [00:01:03.030]Keeping a gratitude journal has really helped me
- [00:01:05.510]to realize that although not every day is a good day,
- [00:01:09.490]there is good in every day.
- [00:01:13.350]Numerous research studies support the benefits
- [00:01:15.760]to emotional and physical well-being.
- [00:01:18.320]Greater Good Science Center out of Berkeley
- [00:01:20.670]has found many benefits of practicing gratitude,
- [00:01:23.400]such as these listed on the slide
- [00:01:25.240]like increased happiness and positive mood;
- [00:01:27.810]more satisfaction with life; less materialistic tendencies;
- [00:01:32.650]being less likely to experience burnout,
- [00:01:34.890]while achieving better physical health;
- [00:01:37.010]better sleep; less fatigue;
- [00:01:40.160]lower levels of cellular inflammation;
- [00:01:42.700]and developing greater levels of resiliency,
- [00:01:44.630]while encouraging the development
- [00:01:46.030]of patience, humility, and wisdom.
- [00:01:50.040]In my own life, gratitude helps me
- [00:01:52.010]with stopping the comparison to others.
- [00:01:55.960]I learned to appreciate myself and all that I am
- [00:01:58.490]and appreciate others and all that they are,
- [00:02:00.730]and through this, through the practice of gratitude,
- [00:02:04.140]I no longer compare myself to others.
- [00:02:07.580]Given the current circumstances regarding COVID-19,
- [00:02:11.000]many are showing their support and gratitude
- [00:02:13.840]in creative ways.
- [00:02:15.850]Many people in Chicago and New York City
- [00:02:17.710]are showing support for first responders
- [00:02:20.000]by opening their windows, applauding,
- [00:02:22.050]and singing songs like "Lean on Me."
- [00:02:24.890]If you wish to get creative
- [00:02:26.060]with how you express your gratitude to first responders
- [00:02:28.660]and essential workers, you could use Post-it Notes
- [00:02:31.260]on your window to make a heart of appreciation,
- [00:02:34.420]or even put a sticky note on your door
- [00:02:35.920]to say appreciation to the Amazon driver
- [00:02:38.500]or the person delivering the mail.
- [00:02:42.110]By practicing gratitude daily,
- [00:02:43.950]you also think happy thoughts
- [00:02:45.510]and reflect on what you appreciate.
- [00:02:48.220]Two of my favorite quotes are,
- [00:02:49.817]"All you have do is think one happy thought,
- [00:02:52.017]"and you'll fly," Peter Pan from "Hook,"
- [00:02:54.750]as well as another one on gratitude,
- [00:02:57.517]"Happiness will never come to those
- [00:02:59.077]"who don't appreciate what they already have."
- [00:03:02.202]Thank you so much, and I hope you have a great day
- [00:03:04.010]and practice gratitude.
