- [00:00:01.440]Welcome, new Explore Center students.
- [00:00:03.690]Thanks for watching this short video about being a Pre-Engineering student at
- [00:00:07.410]UNL. My name is Kelsey and I'm the Career Advisor for the Explore Center.
- [00:00:12.630]Today I'm going to talk about the Explore Center, academics at UNL, and your next
- [00:00:17.910]steps toward enrolling in classes at UNL.
- [00:00:22.330]You're watching this video because you are Pre-Engineering and the Explore
- [00:00:26.110]Center is your advising home. For now,
- [00:00:29.110]we want you to know that all Pre-Engineering students
- [00:00:31.570]have an Explore Center advisor as your go-to person for all your questions
- [00:00:36.220]related to choosing a major or career.
- [00:00:39.370]We work with students who are undecided on a major, Pre-Health, Pre-Law or
- [00:00:44.320]Pre-Engineering.
- [00:00:45.910]We have eight full time academic advisors and one career advisor here to help
- [00:00:50.560]you navigate the ins and outs of academics at UNL and help you find a major and
- [00:00:55.540]career that is a good fit for you.
- [00:00:58.210]You'll be assigned an advisor that cares about you and wants to help you
- [00:01:01.810]succeed.
- [00:01:03.400]Our office is located in Love Library South, room 127.
- [00:01:10.730]A lot of times students associate academic advising with picking out their
- [00:01:15.350]classes each semester. While this is true,
- [00:01:18.260]we can help with a lot more than just choosing classes.
- [00:01:22.040]You can talk with an advisor about major and career exploration, classes and
- [00:01:27.050]degree requirements, academic success,
- [00:01:30.470]navigating college life, and anything else that you would like to discuss.
- [00:01:35.330]Whether you have questions about requirements for a certain major, need some
- [00:01:39.440]tips on succeeding in your classes,
- [00:01:41.870]want to talk about your transition to UNL and your new life on campus, or have
- [00:01:46.670]any other questions,
- [00:01:48.200]we are your go-to place and can help guide you in the right direction.
- [00:01:55.190]We have required advising in the Explore Center through a program called COMPASS.
- [00:02:00.260]Through COMPASS,
- [00:02:01.100]you were required to meet with an academic advisor at least twice each semester
- [00:02:05.930]before you enroll in classes for the next semester and we encourage you to
- [00:02:09.980]connect with an advisor in the first five weeks of the semester for your first
- [00:02:14.330]advising appointment. In your first appointment,
- [00:02:17.660]your advisor wants to hear about your classes,
- [00:02:20.450]how your transition to college is going and to set some goals for the semester.
- [00:02:25.610]Advisors will help you identify and work toward your academic, career and
- [00:02:30.380]personal goals.
- [00:02:32.150]An example of an academic goal is working toward a 3.5 GPA or earning an A in
- [00:02:37.940]your chemistry class.
- [00:02:39.770]A career goal might be shadowing an engineer or researching careers in
- [00:02:43.940]construction management, and a personal goal could be joining a club or student
- [00:02:48.770]organization on campus. Whatever your goals are,
- [00:02:52.520]our academic advisors will help you as you work toward them through your
- [00:02:56.090]individualized COMPASS advising plan.
- [00:03:01.390]Now I want to talk about being a Pre- Engineering student in the Explore Center
- [00:03:06.070]In your advising appointment,
- [00:03:07.600]you will work with an academic advisor to create a schedule that reflects your
- [00:03:11.980]engineering interests.
- [00:03:13.960]You can declare into the College of Engineering once you have a 2.5 cumulative
- [00:03:18.940]GPA and are ready to take calculus. After two semesters of being Pre-Engineering,
- [00:03:25.210]you'll be switched to Undeclared and continue working with your Explore Center
- [00:03:29.500]advisor.
- [00:03:32.310]There are many ways to gain experience in the field of engineering.
- [00:03:35.580]As a Pre-Engineering student, you can join the college's
- [00:03:39.060]student organizations and competitive teams, as well as take introductory
- [00:03:43.740]engineering courses. Additionally,
- [00:03:46.680]Engineering provides peer tutoring for math, science,
- [00:03:50.760]and the first two years of engineering courses through their Study Stop.
- [00:03:55.050]This is a great resource to access academic help.
- [00:03:58.620]The College of Engineering Career Services provides career coaching,
- [00:04:02.580]career fairs, and workshops,
- [00:04:04.590]which are all great opportunities to learn more about your engineering area of
- [00:04:08.910]interest.
- [00:04:11.940]Now I'd like to talk with you about the basics of your UNL degree.
- [00:04:16.980]A UNL degree requires 120 credit hours and is composed of the different
- [00:04:21.750]categories you see on the screen. As a Pre-Engineering student,
- [00:04:25.950]you may find that the engineering major you are considering requires more than
- [00:04:30.180]120 credit hours for graduation.
- [00:04:34.080]ACE is the UNL general education system.
- [00:04:37.710]No matter what college or major you declare, you need to complete one class in
- [00:04:42.660]each of the 10 categories.
- [00:04:44.880]These are great to use as exploratory courses for areas of interest.
- [00:04:49.380]Most of you will sign up for some ACE classes on your NSE day.
- [00:04:53.190]A few things that all degrees have in common are ACE requirements,
- [00:04:57.420]college specific requirements, major requirements, and electives.
- [00:05:02.490]Engineering majors have many areas that overlap. For instance,
- [00:05:07.260]Math 106, which is calculus, will count both as a requirement for your
- [00:05:12.270]major and for your ACE 3.
- [00:05:15.540]Most engineering majors do not have many electives,
- [00:05:18.660]so it is important to work closely with your advisor to make sure you are on
- [00:05:22.500]track. This might sound like a lot to keep track of, but don't worry.
- [00:05:26.760]We have you covered.
- [00:05:31.260]This is a sample schedule for a student who's interested in engineering.
- [00:05:35.760]Math and science are two common courses to see on a Pre-Engineering student's
- [00:05:39.900]schedule and your advisor will make sure that you are placed in the correct
- [00:05:43.860]classes based on your interest and your Math Placement Exam score.
- [00:05:48.870]Incoming engineering students also take a seminar class that helps them connect
- [00:05:53.430]to the College of Engineering and learn more about the field of engineering.
- [00:06:00.320]One way you'll learn about academic resources at UNL is through your first
- [00:06:04.850]course at UNL called Explore Center Start Smart.
- [00:06:09.440]Start Smart is a free pass,
- [00:06:11.450]no pass course required of all Explore Center students.
- [00:06:15.140]This means that if completed by the deadline, you'll pass this non-graded course
- [00:06:20.450]and it does not impact your GPA.
- [00:06:23.000]However, it will appear on your transcript, so do you take it seriously.
- [00:06:27.890]You can complete it through your course portal called Canvas.
- [00:06:32.360]Canvas is a website that will house all of your courses at UNL and has many
- [00:06:36.980]functions including communicating with your classmates and instructors,
- [00:06:41.720]submitting assignments, and keeping track of due dates on the calendar.
- [00:06:46.430]You will be required to complete the Explore Center Start Smart course over the
- [00:06:50.780]summer before fall classes begin in order to pass.
- [00:06:55.340]The course is self-paced and you will have to complete a number of units that
- [00:06:59.480]will introduce you to important resources at UNL.
- [00:07:03.110]It will also touch on important topics regarding how to explore majors and get
- [00:07:07.790]involved at UNL.
- [00:07:09.740]Explore Center advisors teach the class and are available Monday through Friday
- [00:07:14.990]8 to 5 to help answer any questions about the course.
- [00:07:19.070]If you have any concerns about being able to complete the course on your own,
- [00:07:23.210]please let your academic advisor know.
- [00:07:27.500]We want to stay in touch with you,
- [00:07:29.150]not just this summer but throughout the semester as well.
- [00:07:33.500]Here are some ways to stay connected with us.
- [00:07:36.290]Setting up and checking your Huskers email regularly is important as this is the
- [00:07:41.720]primary way we will communicate with you.
- [00:07:44.450]You'll receive instructions from the university on how to set up your Huskers
- [00:07:48.470]email account.
- [00:07:50.210]Text message reminders are another way we keep you in the loop on important
- [00:07:54.230]dates and deadlines. Now's a great time to sign up for our texting service.
- [00:07:59.360]if you aren't already on your phone
- [00:08:01.700]Text @exploreunl to 81010 and you will receive
- [00:08:09.590]important updates from our office.
- [00:08:12.440]We try to keep text reminders to a minimum,
- [00:08:14.780]so don't only rely on this as your main form of communication,
- [00:08:18.680]but rather as an extra reminder for important events. Finally,
- [00:08:23.600]the university will have a variety of events during Big Red
- [00:08:26.750]Welcome the first few weeks of the semester,
- [00:08:29.780]so don't forget to participate in these events.
- [00:08:32.570]More information will come later regarding these opportunities.
- [00:08:37.940]The next step toward enrolling in classes is meeting with an academic advisor.
- [00:08:42.650]You will receive an email from an Explore Center
- [00:08:45.020]academic advisor in the weeks leading up to your NSE enrollment day.
- [00:08:49.640]This email will include a link for you to schedule a virtual advising
- [00:08:53.510]meeting via Zoom with a specific Explore Center advisor.
- [00:08:57.930]Be sure to continue checking your email in the weeks prior to your NSE
- [00:09:01.710]enrollment date. If you have any questions or concerns,
- [00:09:05.250]please contact the Explore Center at (402) 472-3605.
- [00:09:12.930]Here are a few items to make sure you complete before you meet with an academic
- [00:09:16.830]advisor to talk about classes: the Math Placement Exam,
- [00:09:21.630]the Advising Inventory, and the Modern Language Placement Exam
- [00:09:25.710]if you plan to take a foreign language course.
- [00:09:28.650]More information about how to complete these items can be found on the Explore
- [00:09:32.850]Center NSE webpage.
- [00:09:36.480]Before you meet with your academic advisor,
- [00:09:39.030]here are some things to be thinking about to help you prepare.
- [00:09:43.080]Let your advisor know if you have any college credit coming from high school
- [00:09:47.010]such as AP, dual enrollment or IB credit.
- [00:09:51.840]Think about your interests and any majors you would like to explore.
- [00:09:55.650]What are your favorite and least favorite classes?
- [00:09:58.260]What careers can you see yourself in?
- [00:10:00.630]Don't worry if you don't have it all figured out.
- [00:10:02.940]That's what your advisor is here to help you with. Finally,
- [00:10:06.420]think about activities or organizations you might be interested in joining,
- [00:10:10.740]especially if this will impact your course scheduling.
- [00:10:13.770]Some examples include ROTC, Greek life, marching band,
- [00:10:18.780]and show choir.
- [00:10:21.510]That's all of the information I have for you today about your next steps at UNL.
- [00:10:25.890]We are excited for you to start your journey.
- [00:10:28.290]Your advisor's happy to answer any questions you might have during your virtual
- [00:10:32.190]advising meeting. Have a great day.
