- [00:00:01.080]Welcome, new Explore Center students.
- [00:00:03.150]Thanks for watching this short video about being a Pre-Health student at UNL.
- [00:00:07.320]My name is Kelsey and I'm the Career Advisor for the Explore Center.
- [00:00:11.040]Today I'm going to talk about the Explore Center, academics at UNL, and your next
- [00:00:15.750]steps towards enrolling in classes at UNL.
- [00:00:20.120]You're watching this video because you are Pre-Health, and the Explore Center is
- [00:00:23.660]your academic advising home. For now,
- [00:00:26.450]we want you to know that all Pre-Health students have an Explore Center advisor
- [00:00:30.260]as a go-to person for all your questions related to choosing a major or career
- [00:00:35.090]and anything Pre-Health related.
- [00:00:37.610]We work with students who are undecided on a major, Pre-Health,
- [00:00:41.270]Pre-Law or Pre-Engineering.
- [00:00:43.820]We have eight full time academic advisors and one career advisor here to help
- [00:00:48.320]you navigate the ins and outs of academics at UNL and help you find a major and
- [00:00:53.150]career that is a good fit for you.
- [00:00:55.820]Whether you know for sure which Pre-Health area you want to pursue or are still
- [00:01:00.050]exploring different health professions,
- [00:01:02.420]your advisor cares about you and wants to help you succeed.
- [00:01:06.800]The Explore Center is located in Love Library South, room 127.
- [00:01:13.120]A lot of times students associate academic advising with picking out their
- [00:01:17.140]classes each semester. Well, this is true.
- [00:01:20.080]We can help with a lot more than just choosing classes.
- [00:01:23.590]You can talk with an advisor about major and career exploration, classes and
- [00:01:28.930]degree requirements and prerequisites for professional school,
- [00:01:32.890]preparing for professional school, academic success,
- [00:01:37.120]navigating college life and anything else that you would like to discuss.
- [00:01:41.740]Whether you have questions about requirements for a certain major,
- [00:01:45.250]need some tips on succeeding in your classes,
- [00:01:48.010]want to talk about your transition to UNL and your new life on campus, or have
- [00:01:52.570]any other questions,
- [00:01:53.860]we are your go-to place and can help guide you in the right direction.
- [00:01:59.750]We have a required advising program in the Explore Center called COMPASS. Through
- [00:02:04.670]COMPASS,
- [00:02:05.210]you're required to meet with an academic advisor at least twice each semester
- [00:02:09.500]before you enroll in classes for the next semester.
- [00:02:12.680]We encourage you to connect with an advisor in the first five weeks of the
- [00:02:16.490]semester for your first advising appointment. In your first appointment,
- [00:02:20.990]your advisor wants to hear about your classes,
- [00:02:23.720]how your transition to college is going, and to set some goals for the semester.
- [00:02:29.240]Advisors will help you identify and work toward your academic, career, and
- [00:02:33.590]personal goals.
- [00:02:35.420]An example of an academic goal is working toward a 3.5 GPA or earning an A in
- [00:02:41.180]your chemistry class.
- [00:02:43.010]A career goal might be shadowing a physical therapist or researching different
- [00:02:47.300]summer programs for Pre-Med students.
- [00:02:50.120]A personal goal could be joining a club or student organization on campus.
- [00:02:55.070]Whatever your goals are,
- [00:02:56.420]our academic advisors will help you as you work through your individualized
- [00:03:00.310]COMPASS plan.
- [00:03:04.350]There are a few things that are helpful to know about being a Pre-Health
- [00:03:07.530]student. First,
- [00:03:09.480]all Pre-Health areas that the Explore Center advises will require schooling
- [00:03:13.650]beyond UNL.
- [00:03:15.150]We will talk more on the next slide about the differences between two year and
- [00:03:18.960]four year Pre-Health tracks at UNL. Second,
- [00:03:22.800]it's important to know that Pre-Health at UNL is considered an advising category
- [00:03:27.630]and not a major you can graduate in either.
- [00:03:30.420]You will leave UNL to complete your schooling elsewhere or you will
- [00:03:33.780]choose a major to complete while also working on your Pre-Health requirements.
- [00:03:39.390]Next,
- [00:03:40.020]there will be extracurricular requirements for you to work on in addition to the
- [00:03:44.130]academic requirements for your Pre-Health area.
- [00:03:47.070]I will cover those requirements in a few slides. Finally,
- [00:03:51.630]the Explore Center is your Pre-Health advising office for your entire UNL
- [00:03:55.650]career.
- [00:03:56.520]We work with students after they declare their major to ensure that they are
- [00:04:00.210]meeting academic and extracurricular Pre-Health requirements.
- [00:04:04.830]Please take a second to review the graphic on the screen and identify whether or
- [00:04:08.940]not you will need to choose a major based on your Pre-Health interest area.
- [00:04:13.770]The first column indicates a Pre-Health area that will require earning a
- [00:04:18.390]bachelor's degree.
- [00:04:19.980]The second column indicates Pre-Health areas where a bachelor's degree is
- [00:04:24.120]required or preferred.
- [00:04:26.340]The final column are Pre-Health areas that do not require a major because you
- [00:04:31.350]will apply and transfer to a different school.
- [00:04:33.630]To complete your degree for Pre-Health students,
- [00:04:37.020]you will need or want to choose a major.
- [00:04:39.420]Your NSE advising meeting is a great opportunity to talk with your academic
- [00:04:43.680]advisor about subject areas that interests you.
- [00:04:47.100]You can major in anything as a Pre-Health student.
- [00:04:50.130]Exploring and choosing majors is an active process,
- [00:04:52.980]one that your Explore Center advisor is happy to help you with.
- [00:04:57.610]For students who don't need to declare a major,
- [00:05:00.010]you will work with your academic advisor to identify potential programs of
- [00:05:04.000]interest and work with them to make sure you are meeting the requirements to
- [00:05:07.900]apply and transfer to those schools.
- [00:05:12.400]As I mentioned earlier, as a Pre-Health student,
- [00:05:15.100]you will have requirements that go beyond taking the right classes to apply to a
- [00:05:19.090]Pre-Health program.
- [00:05:20.830]Professional health programs expect that students are active and involved on
- [00:05:25.000]campus and in their communities.
- [00:05:27.370]Shadowing health professionals in your field of interest will help you better
- [00:05:31.030]understand your intended profession.
- [00:05:33.700]Volunteering gives you an opportunity to gain valuable interpersonal skills,
- [00:05:38.470]interact with a wide variety of people, and give back to your community.
- [00:05:44.130]There are many forms of extracurricular involvement including research,
- [00:05:48.030]lab experience, and clubs and organizations on campus.
- [00:05:51.990]The many opportunities on campus and in the Lincoln community will be valuable
- [00:05:56.400]to you as you work towards your healthcare career goals.
- [00:06:01.100]The Explore Center has additional resources to help Pre-Health students succeed.
- [00:06:05.990]We offer an Introduction to Health Professions class that will expose you to a
- [00:06:10.220]wide variety of healthcare careers.
- [00:06:13.150]Our professional school visitors program allows students to conveniently
- [00:06:17.230]interact with admissions representatives from local health schools to learn more
- [00:06:21.640]about their programs.
- [00:06:23.470]The Explore Center also offers workshops on a variety of relevant Pre-Health
- [00:06:27.580]topics such as applying to health school and preparing for health school
- [00:06:31.810]entrance exams. Finally,
- [00:06:34.900]every fall we offer a Pre-Health Orientation for you to start your career at UNL
- [00:06:39.430]off strong.
- [00:06:40.630]Please check your email as we get closer to the start of the semester
- [00:06:43.630]for more details.
- [00:06:49.060]Now I want to cover some of the basic information you need to understand about
- [00:06:53.020]academics at UNL.
- [00:06:55.240]A UNL degree consists of 120 credit hours and those hours are made up of the
- [00:07:00.490]categories you see on the screen. ACE,
- [00:07:04.240]which stands for Achievement Centered Education, is the UNL general education
- [00:07:08.860]system.
- [00:07:09.910]If you're a student pursuing a health profession that only requires one
- [00:07:14.380]to two years at UNL, you will not need to fulfill ACE requirements.
- [00:07:19.390]For those of you who will choose a major,
- [00:07:21.610]no matter what college or major you declare,
- [00:07:24.130]you will need to complete one class in each of the 10 ACE requirements.
- [00:07:29.180]These are great to use as exploratory classes for areas of interest.
- [00:07:33.950]Many of you will sign up for some ACE classes on your NSE day.
- [00:07:37.940]A few things that all degrees have in common are ACE requirements,
- [00:07:41.990]college specific requirements, major requirements and electives.
- [00:07:46.550]Your Pre-Health requirements such as math and science will fall within these
- [00:07:50.360]areas.
- [00:07:50.870]Most of the time some degrees have other requirements which you can discuss with
- [00:07:55.820]your advisor if you decide to declare a minor.
- [00:08:00.020]Your minor will also have requirements which you can discuss with your advisor.
- [00:08:05.260]When you declare your major,
- [00:08:06.940]you'll have a major advisor to help you with the UNL requirements for your
- [00:08:10.690]degree and you'll still have your Pre-Health advisor to make sure that the green
- [00:08:14.740]box is taken care of. This might sound like a lot to keep track of.
- [00:08:19.420]Don't worry. We have you covered this fall.
- [00:08:21.970]You'll create a Pre-Health plan and go over it with your advisor.
- [00:08:28.090]On the screen you'll see two sample schedules for Pre-Health students.
- [00:08:32.140]You'll notice that both schedules have math and science courses which will be
- [00:08:36.130]common for most Pre-Health areas.
- [00:08:38.770]Your advisor will work with you to create a schedule that has the appropriate
- [00:08:42.700]math and science courses for your interest area.
- [00:08:45.910]For both the Nursing and Pre-Med student,
- [00:08:48.460]Both English composition and psychology are meeting requirements for their Pre-Health
- [00:08:52.690]areas. For Pre-Med,
- [00:08:55.770]English and psychology are also meeting ACE requirements.
- [00:09:02.400]One way you will learn more about academic resources at UNL is through your
- [00:09:06.750]first course at UNL called Explore Center Start Smart.
- [00:09:12.220]Start Smart is a free pass
- [00:09:13.990]no pass course required of all Explore Center students.
- [00:09:18.280]This means that if completed by the deadline, you will pass this non-graded
- [00:09:22.540]course and it does not impact your GPA. However,
- [00:09:26.380]it will appear on your transcript, so do you take it seriously.
- [00:09:30.310]You can complete it completely through your course portal called Canvas.
- [00:09:34.960]Canvas is a website that will house all of your courses at UNL and has many
- [00:09:39.550]functions including communicating with your classmates and
- [00:09:43.570]instructors,
- [00:09:44.830]submitting assignments, and keeping track of due dates on the calendar.
- [00:09:49.000]You will be required to complete the Explore Center,
- [00:09:51.460]Start Smart course over the summer before fall classes begin in order to pass.
- [00:09:57.220]The course is self paced and we'll have you complete a number of units that will
- [00:10:01.360]introduce you to important resources at UNL.
- [00:10:04.660]It will also touch on important topics regarding how to explore majors and get
- [00:10:09.220]involved at UNL. Explore Center advisors
- [00:10:12.490]teach the class and are available Monday through Friday 8 to 5 to help
- [00:10:17.320]answer any questions about the course.
- [00:10:19.900]If you have any concerns about being able to complete the course on your own,
- [00:10:23.830]let your academic advisor know.
- [00:10:28.070]We want to stay in touch with you,
- [00:10:29.450]not just this summer but throughout the school year as well.
- [00:10:32.540]Here are some ways to stay connected with us.
- [00:10:35.390]Setting up and checking your Huskers email regularly is important as this is the
- [00:10:39.680]primary way we will communicate with you.
- [00:10:42.290]You'll receive instructions from the university on how to set up your Huskers
- [00:10:46.100]email account. Text message reminders are another way
- [00:10:50.060]we keep you in the loop on important dates and deadlines.
- [00:10:53.600]Now's a great time to sign up for the texting service.
- [00:10:56.720]If you aren't already on your phone.
- [00:10:58.940]Text @exploreunl
- [00:11:02.330]to 81010 and you will receive important updates from our
- [00:11:08.330]office. We try to keep text reminders to a minimum,
- [00:11:11.990]so don't only rely on this as your main form of communication,
- [00:11:15.800]but rather as an extra reminder for important events. Finally,
- [00:11:20.360]the university will have a variety of events during Big Red
- [00:11:23.480]Welcome the first weeks of the semester.
- [00:11:26.240]Don't forget to participate in those events.
- [00:11:28.460]More information will come later regarding these opportunities.
- [00:11:34.220]The next step toward enrolling in classes is meeting with an academic advisor.
- [00:11:38.870]You'll receive an email from an Explore Center academic advisor in the weeks
- [00:11:43.100]leading up to your NSE enrollment day.
- [00:11:46.190]This email will include a link for you to schedule a virtual advising meeting
- [00:11:50.060]via Zoom with a specific Explore Center advisor.
- [00:11:53.800]Be sure to continue checking your email in the weeks prior to your NSE
- [00:11:57.790]enrollment date. If you have any questions or concerns,
- [00:12:01.090]please contact the Explore Center at (402) 472-3605.
- [00:12:09.020]Here are a few items to make sure you complete before you meet with an academic
- [00:12:12.790]advisor to talk about classes: your Math Placement Exam,
- [00:12:17.590]Advising Inventory, and Modern Language Placement Exam
- [00:12:21.100]if you plan to take a foreign language course.
- [00:12:23.830]More information about how to complete these items can be found on the Explore
- [00:12:27.700]Center NSE page.
- [00:12:31.330]Before you meet with your academic advisor,
- [00:12:33.760]here are some things to be thinking about to help you prepare. First,
- [00:12:38.560]let your advisor know if you have any college credit from high school such as
- [00:12:43.030]AP, IB, or dual enrollment credit.
- [00:12:47.650]Next, think about your interests in any majors you would like to explore.
- [00:12:51.880]What are your favorite and least favorite classes?
- [00:12:55.000]What careers can you see yourself in?
- [00:12:57.760]Don't worry if you don't have it all figured out.
- [00:13:00.010]That's what your advisor is here to help you with.
- [00:13:02.890]Finally, think about activities or organizations you might be interested in
- [00:13:06.910]joining, especially if this will impact your course scheduling.
- [00:13:10.540]Some examples include ROTC, Greek life, marching band,
- [00:13:14.830]and show choir.
- [00:13:17.640]That's all the information I have for you today about your next steps at UNL.
- [00:13:21.780]We are excited for you to start your journey.
- [00:13:24.390]Your advisor is happy to answer any questions you might have during your virtual
- [00:13:28.200]advising meeting. Have a great day.
