- [00:00:00.317](upbeat music playing)
- [00:00:08.257]Can you
- [00:00:09.650]start us off by telling us a bit about yourself
- [00:00:13.630]Sure I am Jane Green
- [00:00:15.850]and I am currently married to the chancellor of the
- [00:00:18.490]University of Nebraska, but I was here long before him.
- [00:00:22.410]Um I'm a native of Harvard Nebraska.
- [00:00:24.900]I was raised on a farm out there.
- [00:00:26.969]Um and
- [00:00:30.386]I feel like I've been an Nebraskan all my life.
- [00:00:32.870]We left the state for about sixteen years and then came
- [00:00:35.690]back, so it really gave me a very different appreciation,
- [00:00:38.120]a much greater appreciation for the state,
- [00:00:40.270]for the people, for the history, for the agriculture, for
- [00:00:43.127]everything that makes Nebraska special,
- [00:00:45.900]so it's um it's been a joy to be back in the state,
- [00:00:49.220]since 2003 when we came back.
- [00:00:52.710]Anyway, I um I grew up in Harvard.
- [00:00:56.360]I did not know what I wanted to do
- [00:00:58.170]when I graduated from high school
- [00:00:59.530]and I was the third of four siblings.
- [00:01:02.220]Three of whom were going to be in college at the same time,
- [00:01:05.070]so I happened to get a one year regents from the university
- [00:01:08.642]and my parents thought that'd be a great place for me to go,
- [00:01:11.830]which as it turned out was a wonderful place.
- [00:01:14.130]My brother was a year ahead of me in the College of AG,
- [00:01:17.500]um so he kind of helped me showed me the ropes
- [00:01:20.160]and helped me figure out what classes to take and um
- [00:01:23.870]I came down to UNL and I was
- [00:01:25.950]so grateful that I had those four years
- [00:01:28.567]um as a undergrad in the College of AG
- [00:01:31.310]and um I did a degree in AG honors.
- [00:01:35.490]At the time they allowed you to develop your own course work
- [00:01:38.540]and um
- [00:01:39.988]take what you wanted to take sort of to some extent,
- [00:01:44.220]so I ended up with a mixture of
- [00:01:46.070]AG economics, agronomy, and animal science.
- [00:01:49.190]Um kind of wiggle wobbled around in there
- [00:01:52.190]didn't know for sure where I wanted to end up
- [00:01:53.960]but by the time I was a senior in college
- [00:01:55.930]I had really enjoyed the AG economics part
- [00:01:58.190]and felt like that was what I was interested in doing
- [00:02:00.650]so I stayed and did a masters.
- [00:02:02.920]Graduated with my undergraduate in 1982
- [00:02:05.450]and my masters in 1983
- [00:02:08.858]um and just felt like I was
- [00:02:11.020]had a great education and had a great time
- [00:02:13.280]while I was at it so.
- [00:02:15.301]So through your time at the university
- [00:02:17.931]what clubs or other activities were you involved in?
- [00:02:22.267]You know I was pretty active um I
- [00:02:25.671]the thing that occupied my time most probably was
- [00:02:29.130]Block and Bridle and that's where I
- [00:02:30.990]developed my greatest friendships really.
- [00:02:32.990]Um I was from a farm, but did not have a lot of experience
- [00:02:36.830]with the different types of agriculture
- [00:02:38.970]and especially a lot of the animal agriculture,
- [00:02:40.890]so I really enjoyed doing a lot of the activities
- [00:02:43.171]that we did there, getting to know the professors,
- [00:02:45.970]um working with the other students from all
- [00:02:47.720]across the state,
- [00:02:48.580]and just getting to know a broad band of people.
- [00:02:51.350]At that time we did a lot of traveling too,
- [00:02:53.210]so we would go to national meetings
- [00:02:55.130]and um it was just a really fun experience.
- [00:02:58.820]I was also a student senator for AG
- [00:03:01.800]um and ASUN and I was on AG advisory board
- [00:03:05.410]and um did a lot of different things like that,
- [00:03:09.110]but Block and Brittle was probably my favorite activity.
- [00:03:12.230]But East campus was small so you could meet everybody
- [00:03:14.730]and I really appreciated that too.
- [00:03:16.690]Through your time, did you have
- [00:03:18.760]you mentioned towards your senior year that AG econ
- [00:03:21.310]really struck you interest.
- [00:03:23.160]Did you have a favorite class that you took
- [00:03:25.410]or perhaps a favorite professor
- [00:03:27.360]that you really enjoyed their classes?
- [00:03:29.950]Um you know I think Mike Turner at that time taught
- [00:03:33.780]a Co-ops class that was really enjoying, enjoyable.
- [00:03:36.740]I worked with Ron Hanson and TA'd his
- [00:03:39.926]um AG Finance class and his farm management class
- [00:03:43.730]and I ended up working then with Larry Bitney.
- [00:03:46.440]Um who was an extension specialist in
- [00:03:48.670]farm financial management, so when I
- [00:03:50.984]ended up being in AG Economics for a masters
- [00:03:54.355]I stayed on with the university and worked for extension
- [00:03:57.450]for five years after that too so
- [00:03:59.500]um the farm financial area was really what interest me,
- [00:04:04.320]but we had a lot of good professors.
- [00:04:06.670]Not just in AG Economics but in Agronomy
- [00:04:09.040]and in Animal Science and um
- [00:04:11.010]we were just really blessed with great teachers.
- [00:04:14.182]Definitely. So, did you ever live on
- [00:04:17.593]East campus and like can you tell us some of
- [00:04:20.180]your favorite memories about perhaps
- [00:04:22.180]living in Burr Philly hall?
- [00:04:24.175]You know I did live in Burr hall for two years.
- [00:04:27.600]Um and I one of my strongest memories is
- [00:04:30.205]you know it seems like kids come down
- [00:04:32.218]a lot of times with U-Hauls and lots of stuff
- [00:04:35.167]and my my brother was coming back.
- [00:04:37.190]He lived in HER, which was pretty much across the street,
- [00:04:40.540]but we had his pickup with a camper on it
- [00:04:43.997]and we just shoved our stuff in the back of it
- [00:04:46.740]and he brought me down on a Sunday afternoon.
- [00:04:48.560]A good friend of mine had gotten married that weekend
- [00:04:50.820]before, so there wasn't any time to come down and view
- [00:04:53.410]classes you know, try to figure out where you were
- [00:04:55.220]supposed to be. Um so I just really moved into Burr hall
- [00:04:59.672]to a roommate I did not know totally loved,
- [00:05:02.277]after living with her for a year.
- [00:05:04.060]I mean we just had a really good experience,
- [00:05:06.170]but Burr hall at that time at least was a place where
- [00:05:09.300]everybody kept their doors open and a lot of the alumni
- [00:05:12.050]that had lived in Burr hall just wandered up and down
- [00:05:14.290]and introduced themselves and welcomed everybody
- [00:05:17.500]and um we had a wonderful time.
- [00:05:20.066]The East Union was very new right then so it was
- [00:05:23.540]um kind of a neat experience too and the food was great
- [00:05:26.190]and I one of the things I probably regret is we would
- [00:05:30.189]take our what were called our eating cards at the time
- [00:05:33.850]and eat as much as we could to,
- [00:05:35.346]because everything tasted good,
- [00:05:37.577]so we'd try something of everything
- [00:05:39.480]and then if we ate at five o'clock in the afternoon
- [00:05:41.870]we'd end up going to Valentino's that night for pizza too,
- [00:05:44.560]so uh freshman fifteen was a real thing.
- [00:05:47.138](interviewer laughs)
- [00:05:48.310]But I loved Burr hall. I loved the um
- [00:05:51.140]I loved the intimacy of it, I loved the access to everything
- [00:05:55.020]on East campus and I don't when we moved back to Lincoln
- [00:05:58.603]in 2010 I'm not sure had it changed that much from
- [00:06:02.110]the time I'd been there so it was probably time for
- [00:06:05.260]Burr hall to come down and Massengale hall to be the new
- [00:06:07.841]residents hall. But it was a wonderful place.
- [00:06:11.824]Throughout your college years
- [00:06:14.100]obviously you have so many memories about East campus and
- [00:06:17.561]being involved in Casnr do you have a memory that is
- [00:06:21.566]particularly your favorite one?
- [00:06:23.450]I know it's maybe hard to pick but.
- [00:06:26.120]Um you know again it was probably the things we did
- [00:06:29.010]with um Block and Bridle. I also was apart of the Meet
- [00:06:32.841]judging team which is one of the more unique experiences
- [00:06:35.880]that I would not have predicted when I went down there
- [00:06:38.329]um and it was just because a lot of my friends were doing it
- [00:06:41.410]at that time but it gave us the chance to go to a lot of the
- [00:06:44.260]different universities
- [00:06:47.130]and judge meets
- [00:06:48.140]if you can even fathom that but um that was just great time.
- [00:06:52.800]We also spent. We put together scrapbooks for
- [00:06:55.311]Block and Bridle back then and um,
- [00:06:57.550]so when you were in charge of that would mean
- [00:07:00.050]every evening you were at the Animal Science department
- [00:07:02.340]with other people and with some of the faculty trying to put
- [00:07:05.240]together these memories and um,
- [00:07:06.765]so it was just a lot. A lot of work really but just a lot of
- [00:07:11.075]fun time and getting to know people and um
- [00:07:13.286]visiting their places and learning more about them.
- [00:07:19.620]And then when it comes to game day
- [00:07:22.040]what side are you on? Are you a Valentino's Pizza
- [00:07:25.340]all the way or do you love Runza?
- [00:07:28.876]Runza
- [00:07:30.677]Runza
- [00:07:31.510]And I do love Valentino's Pizza
- [00:07:33.940]but it just. There's something about a Runza that
- [00:07:36.422]just tastes right when its warm and it cold out
- [00:07:39.530]and its just easy to eat and it just feels like Nebraska.
- [00:07:45.020]Nebraska in a sandwich.
- [00:07:47.290]Yeah.
- [00:07:48.220]And then I guess our final question for
- [00:07:50.030]today is what piece of advice
- [00:07:52.424]um would you give the 2020 graduates this year?
- [00:07:57.810]You know this is such a unique year Emma.
- [00:08:00.615]Um it's I apologize to all of you for not getting to have
- [00:08:05.360]spring on campus um the way you probably would of like
- [00:08:08.842]the way they probably would have like to
- [00:08:11.350]we were on campus Ronny was filming uh
- [00:08:13.760]something last week and it was just so quiet
- [00:08:16.351]and spring on campus is so beautiful with all the
- [00:08:19.610]flower and shrubs and trees and um
- [00:08:22.694]I guess my advice is we don't know the future is going to
- [00:08:26.140]hold but just keep learning, be open to opportunities
- [00:08:30.712]even though these are really hard times
- [00:08:33.010]there's going to be lots of opportunities for
- [00:08:34.870]bright young people to use their
- [00:08:36.817]the skills that you've learned at UNL
- [00:08:39.480]and to further yourselves so just
- [00:08:41.460]um don't think you can predict what life is going to be,
- [00:08:44.886]which is be open to the possibilities that are there
- [00:08:48.100]and just enjoy it.
- [00:08:50.623]Well Jane thank you so much
- [00:08:53.060]for taking your time today and visiting with us about
- [00:08:56.610]your time at UNL and especially on East campus.
- [00:09:00.360]We really appreciate it. Any final remarks
- [00:09:02.723]that you'd like to add?
- [00:09:04.600]You know what um in terms of a favorite class
- [00:09:08.990]it may have been Animal Science 101 with Ted Done
- [00:09:12.030]back then that was when I came as a freshman.
- [00:09:14.820]I didn't know what I wanted to study,
- [00:09:16.740]so I took a introductory class AG Econ, and
- [00:09:19.293]um Agronomy, and Animal Science, and then a Biology class.
- [00:09:23.380]And um the Animal Science one it was just fun and Ted was
- [00:09:27.920]a very um.
- [00:09:30.990]He was a great professor.
- [00:09:32.160]There were lots of great professors.
- [00:09:34.090]Um but, and I was thinking to about your initial email
- [00:09:38.260]talked about what had changed.
- [00:09:40.120]You know the physical structure of UNL
- [00:09:43.060]has changed so much in the years
- [00:09:45.359]but the Union like I said was pretty new when we were there
- [00:09:49.078]but um you know the revamped Union is just absolutely
- [00:09:53.319]beautiful and I can't wait to see when its really open
- [00:09:56.190]and used for activities. Um
- [00:09:59.840]and see why Thompson is gonna be a very neat experience too
- [00:10:03.430]but I've been in Massengale that's a beautiful dorm um
- [00:10:07.595]but just the there's so much that has changed physically and
- [00:10:12.020]so much in the intimacy and the way that professors
- [00:10:15.430]and the administrators care about you that's
- [00:10:17.323]stayed the same, so that one thing I find comfort in.
