- [00:00:05.430]Hello, and thank you for taking a few moments
- [00:00:07.520]to watch this video from
- [00:00:08.960]the Nebraska Manufacturing Extension Partnership
- [00:00:11.403]on ISO 9001, an overview.
- [00:00:15.560]My name is Joe Roy, and I will be your moderator
- [00:00:18.510]of this video.
- [00:00:21.460]Today, I wanna talk a little bit about
- [00:00:23.552]is some background information on ISO 9001,
- [00:00:28.330]and as well as giving you an overview
- [00:00:29.760]of the ISO 9001 structure and certification process.
- [00:00:36.130]The ISO certification became established in 1947
- [00:00:41.660]by a non-governmental organization out
- [00:00:43.450]of Geneva, Switzerland.
- [00:00:46.120]This group has memberships
- [00:00:47.540]of over 160 different national standards
- [00:00:50.674]and is the world's largest developer
- [00:00:53.230]of voluntary international standards based
- [00:00:55.820]on global and market relevance.
- [00:01:00.465]So, what exactly is ISO 9001?
- [00:01:05.270]Well, ISO 9001 is the world's most popular
- [00:01:07.797]and most commonly used quality management system.
- [00:01:13.400]It is developed using an internal consensus
- [00:01:16.490]on what is good management practice,
- [00:01:19.240]and focuses on meeting customer requirements
- [00:01:22.910]as well as the requirements of other interested parties
- [00:01:25.426]such as your suppliers and customs.
- [00:01:28.540]It's distilled into standard requirements
- [00:01:31.388]and covers any organization no matter
- [00:01:33.995]the size, industry, or culture.
- [00:01:37.020]At the Nebraska MEP, we've even done ISO certification
- [00:01:39.886]for a company as small as two employees.
- [00:01:44.124]So, how does ISO 9001 work?
- [00:01:48.130]Well, first it identifies what requirements
- [00:01:50.268]you must meet.
- [00:01:52.028]It does not however, identify how you need
- [00:01:54.388]to meet these requirements.
- [00:01:55.660]Do you have some capability of structuring
- [00:01:58.830]this specifically for your organization?
- [00:02:01.883]The reason for this is that every quality management system
- [00:02:04.848]is unique, thus this standard allows for the flexibility,
- [00:02:09.840]and allows for you as the management organization
- [00:02:13.340]to stay in the drivers seat.
- [00:02:16.070]So, we're gonna talk a little bit about
- [00:02:18.150]what a quality management system is.
- [00:02:20.306]But this tells you what a quality management system helps
- [00:02:22.950]you achieve.
- [00:02:24.000]It helps you achieve greater customer satisfaction.
- [00:02:27.490]It helps you gain repeat business.
- [00:02:29.640]It may also help you gain new business.
- [00:02:31.700]Many times in our IP process, we'll require
- [00:02:33.758]you to be ISO certified.
- [00:02:36.570]This should lead to increased profitability
- [00:02:38.592]as well as increased effectiveness of your organization
- [00:02:41.525]while providing a higher consistency
- [00:02:43.645]of the product that you develop.
- [00:02:48.120]So, what are some of the advantages?
- [00:02:50.470]Well, first off, certification in ISO 9001 is voluntary.
- [00:02:55.790]You can become compliant,
- [00:02:57.000]and you don't have to become certified,
- [00:02:58.910]or like most companies do.
- [00:03:00.160]First they become compliant and then certified.
- [00:03:03.560]When you become certified, that is done by a third party
- [00:03:06.860]that does an independent check on your conformity
- [00:03:09.770]to ISO 9001 standards.
- [00:03:12.674]It indicates to the outside world that you have
- [00:03:14.803]a quality management system in place
- [00:03:17.273]which leads to increased national
- [00:03:19.354]and international recognition.
- [00:03:21.360]Providing you with competitive advantages
- [00:03:23.479]and a better company image.
- [00:03:25.796]So, here's an example of what
- [00:03:28.550]a quality management system might look like.
- [00:03:30.970]These are seven common areas that you
- [00:03:32.720]would find in a quality management system.
- [00:03:35.720]It would be customer focus.
- [00:03:37.600]It would show an outline of who your leadership team is.
- [00:03:41.670]It would engage your people in both
- [00:03:43.875]the process and a continued improvement approach.
- [00:03:47.703]It would help you use evidence-based decision
- [00:03:49.948]making techniques in order to make better decisions,
- [00:03:54.965]and it should help with improvement in your relationships
- [00:03:57.919]both internally and external.
- [00:04:02.190]So, why was 9001 revised in 2015 to become 9001: 2015?
- [00:04:09.889]Well, in the last 20 years, out world has been changing
- [00:04:12.940]at a quite a rapid pace.
- [00:04:14.530]Well, they felt from the 9001 original one
- [00:04:17.375]that they did back in the early 2000's,
- [00:04:19.583]they needed to update it, allowing us to adapt, obviously,
- [00:04:23.298]to this changing world.
- [00:04:25.378]So, this adaptation allowed you to enhance your ability
- [00:04:30.177]to satisfy your customers while maintaining relevance
- [00:04:34.444]and providing an integrated approach
- [00:04:36.546]to organizational management as well
- [00:04:39.167]as other management systems that you
- [00:04:40.968]and your outside customers might have.
- [00:04:43.602]Thus it's reflecting the need to have all your user groups
- [00:04:46.734]in this new and more complex environment
- [00:04:50.226]which helps you set a consistence foundation
- [00:04:53.425]for your organization.
- [00:04:57.640]So, some of the key improvements that came
- [00:04:59.640]in from the changes was an increased emphasis
- [00:05:02.584]on achieving value for the organization and it's customers.
- [00:05:07.530]It was a greater emphasis placed on the leadership
- [00:05:09.837]and organizational content.
- [00:05:11.880]In other words, about what you do specifically
- [00:05:14.089]which allows you to customize it a little more.
- [00:05:17.160]The focus was changed to be using risk-based thinking.
- [00:05:21.170]You had emphasis now on objectives, measurements,
- [00:05:24.390]and change.
- [00:05:25.290]So basically, you have to say what you do
- [00:05:27.557]and do what you say.
- [00:05:30.198]It helped you make sure that
- [00:05:31.690]you made good, appropriate stakeholder-focused communication
- [00:05:35.810]and awareness to those stakeholders of how you are working,
- [00:05:39.110]and it decreased the emphasis on documentation
- [00:05:41.392]which was very welcomed by most people.
- [00:05:45.440]The emphasis focused on a process approach
- [00:05:48.867]which allowed you to understand
- [00:05:50.700]and meet customer requirements.
- [00:05:52.616]It helped you outline how the processes you use add value
- [00:05:56.349]to your output.
- [00:05:58.610]It helped you measure the process performance
- [00:06:00.653]and effectiveness so that if new
- [00:06:02.453]or continuous improvement needed to be made,
- [00:06:05.880]you would be able to do that.
- [00:06:09.670]So that's kinda what happened, as you can see.
- [00:06:11.290]In the last bullet point,
- [00:06:12.220]we talked about continual improvement.
- [00:06:13.950]It's very high on continuous improvement.
- [00:06:17.790]All risk based management systems are balanced.
- [00:06:21.050]They're a balance between your risks
- [00:06:22.490]and your opportunities.
- [00:06:24.370]Now, why do you need to maintain this balance?
- [00:06:26.620]'Cause you wanna have assure
- [00:06:27.610]that your customers have confidence
- [00:06:29.068]and that they're satisfied with what you give them.
- [00:06:32.720]You wanna sure that the consistency
- [00:06:35.320]of your products meets the quality that you want.
- [00:06:38.737]It helps in your overall culture
- [00:06:41.360]of prevention of bad product and improvement
- [00:06:44.030]of your current product.
- [00:06:45.750]So, that's why successful companies like yours
- [00:06:47.867]would take this risk-based approach.
- [00:06:51.590]So, what are some of the benefits of
- [00:06:53.190]the ISO 9001: 2015 standards?
- [00:06:57.160]Well, one of the big ones is
- [00:06:58.733]that it puts greater emphasis on leadership engagement.
- [00:07:02.350]As a leader of the organization,
- [00:07:03.880]this is not something you can set up and walk away from,
- [00:07:06.348]but helps make sure that you stay engaged
- [00:07:08.550]in this process.
- [00:07:09.775]It helps also address your organization's risks
- [00:07:12.884]and opportunities in a structured manner
- [00:07:14.865]so that everybody knows what's going on using
- [00:07:17.790]a common structure in terms as well as simplified language.
- [00:07:22.270]It addresses supply chain management much more effectively
- [00:07:25.134]than the previous versions of ISO 9001,
- [00:07:29.060]and it is more user-friendly for the service
- [00:07:31.049]and knowledge-based organizations.
- [00:07:33.420]As well as the traditional manufacturing organizations.
- [00:07:38.640]So, that's all about the quality management system
- [00:07:41.140]which is the first little block here
- [00:07:43.070]on this roadmap that you'll see.
- [00:07:46.050]The implementation of your quality management system helps
- [00:07:48.253]you with all the things we were talking about there.
- [00:07:51.050]And our ISO consultants will help you do that,
- [00:07:54.577]and they'll help you conduct your internal audit
- [00:07:57.040]and review, and show you the results
- [00:07:59.768]to your top management group so you know what you're facing.
- [00:08:03.140]Once that is all completed, they will set up
- [00:08:05.633]a selection of a certification body that you wanna use,
- [00:08:09.110]and you'll have your stage one audit.
- [00:08:11.490]This is the first audit by the outside certification board.
- [00:08:15.080]And they come in and review what we put in place with you
- [00:08:18.820]and help you determine
- [00:08:19.708]if there are any adjustments have to be made.
- [00:08:22.700]About six weeks after the first stage one audit,
- [00:08:25.472]you'll have a stage two audit
- [00:08:27.260]which will be your final audit that will help you get
- [00:08:29.680]your confirmation of your registration.
- [00:08:32.700]And then in order to stay certified,
- [00:08:34.760]you will have annual reviews by
- [00:08:36.650]the certification auditing firm to keep you ISO certified.
- [00:08:41.730]If you would like to talk specifically
- [00:08:43.302]about how ISO 9001: 2015 can benefit you
