- [00:00:00.991]Hey everyone, we are broadcasting today
- [00:00:04.120]from the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts
- [00:00:07.720]here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:10.360]I'm Ash Eliza Smith,
- [00:00:11.750]Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts,
- [00:00:14.550]and I'm here with my two colleagues,
- [00:00:16.210]Ben Kreimer and Jesse Fleming.
- [00:00:18.430]I'm Ben Kreimer,
- [00:00:19.560]I'm a Creative Technologist in residence
- [00:00:22.060]at the Carson Center.
- [00:00:23.400]I'm Jesse Fleming,
- [00:00:24.450]also Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts.
- [00:00:27.320]We're here to show you around
- [00:00:29.110]and talk a little bit about the upcoming open studios
- [00:00:31.570]that we invite all of you to.
- [00:00:33.310]We're using Mozilla Hub specifically
- [00:00:36.130]as a place for gathering.
- [00:00:39.460]Open studio's a place to continue teaching
- [00:00:43.100]within the Carson Center,
- [00:00:44.500]but taking on a new world of virtuality.
- [00:00:48.850]It's also an extension of our community.
- [00:00:51.300]We have so many different platforms going on,
- [00:00:53.810]we have Discord, we have Canvas, we have,
- [00:00:56.580]we have Zoom. Zoom.
- [00:00:58.160]And now, we actually have Mozilla Hubs.
- [00:01:01.080]Unlike those kinds of platforms,
- [00:01:03.830]I mean, we're talking in a little group situation here,
- [00:01:08.620]kinda like you would do in real life.
- [00:01:10.120]So we're kinda bridging what it's like
- [00:01:12.520]to communicate in real life.
- [00:01:13.920]It gives a sense of connection
- [00:01:15.160]that's sort of unfounded in other forms
- [00:01:18.590]of virtual communication.
- [00:01:20.620]The impetus for this was
- [00:01:22.960]that we had intended to have open studios
- [00:01:26.110]at the end of the semester,
- [00:01:28.400]to exhibit all the student work that we had done.
- [00:01:31.740]As we had to depart from, evacuate the Center,
- [00:01:36.450]this became a way to not only fill that void,
- [00:01:40.910]but also create a new opportunity,
- [00:01:43.020]a new opportunity for teaching,
- [00:01:45.770]a new opportunity for engagement,
- [00:01:47.330]a way to exhibit in ways that you can't do
- [00:01:50.110]in the material world.
- [00:01:51.400]Right now, in terms of classwork,
- [00:01:53.850]they're really thinking about the projects
- [00:01:55.640]that they're working on
- [00:01:56.540]and how those will be exhibited within this 3D space
- [00:02:00.710]as we move towards crits and reviews
- [00:02:02.710]and opens studios during week 15.
- [00:02:05.810]So in terms of accessibility, it's free.
- [00:02:08.900]It all happens in the browser.
- [00:02:10.430]It's actually quite remarkable,
- [00:02:11.630]especially when compared to other kinds
- [00:02:14.540]of immersive, shared experiences like Hub's.
- [00:02:18.040]There's really nothing else like it, as a platform.
- [00:02:20.510]So one way that we're using Mozilla Hubs
- [00:02:23.630]to engage community,
- [00:02:24.920]when I'm thinking of community in this context,
- [00:02:27.170]it's beyond the Carson Center,
- [00:02:29.800]beyond the university even,
- [00:02:31.410]and the community of Lincoln.
- [00:02:34.120]When you're in here, you can mingle.
- [00:02:36.422](laughs) Basically, you can go up to people,
- [00:02:39.610]you'll be able to check out students' work,
- [00:02:42.540]interact with students.
- [00:02:43.920]This hub's approach,
- [00:02:45.750]it's an opportunity for people to come together,
- [00:02:48.400]that kind of community event designed to really support
- [00:02:52.000]that element of community engagement,
- [00:02:54.410]conversation and the fluidity.
- [00:02:56.800]That's a really important component of that.
- [00:03:00.380]Open studios will be on May 1st
- [00:03:03.150]from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Central Standard Time.
- [00:03:07.780]And we hope to have people visit
- [00:03:10.630]from all over the United States and all over the world.
- [00:03:14.350]And we will be sending out a website shortly
- [00:03:18.780]that will kinda have a program listed
- [00:03:21.200]and instructions. (piano music)
