- [00:00:00.930]Hello, my name is Charlie Foster.
- [00:00:03.240]I am the assistant vice chancellor
- [00:00:04.750]for Inclusive Student Excellence
- [00:00:06.410]and the director of the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center.
- [00:00:09.980]Welcome to the Husker Dialogues Virtual Committee Meeting.
- [00:00:13.790]We really appreciate your interest in educating
- [00:00:16.200]our campus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
- [00:00:19.850]Without your commitment to this charge,
- [00:00:22.250]we would not be able to go forward well.
- [00:00:25.250]Many of you have participated in Husker Dialogues previously
- [00:00:28.850]and know how the process works.
- [00:00:31.290]Our hope today is that we can begin to form committees
- [00:00:34.070]that will allow us to perform this task well.
- [00:00:37.140]And for our new to campus,
- [00:00:38.570]or new to Husker Dialogues participants welcome.
- [00:00:42.170]It is a project with great heart that requires
- [00:00:44.660]both logistical and dialogue slash conversational skill.
- [00:00:49.460]We gathered together the class of first year students
- [00:00:52.000]to learn about dialogue and to learn about each other.
- [00:00:55.300]It is a process that we have come to know.
- [00:00:59.090]COVID-19 has pushed back a lot of our planning,
- [00:01:02.500]but we have great hopes of going forward,
- [00:01:05.410]even planning for a virtual event if we need to pivot later.
- [00:01:09.500]But for now, let me tell you about our plan.
- [00:01:15.780]We are scheduled to have Husker Dialogues on Thursday,
- [00:01:18.440]September 10th at 7:00 PM at the Devaney.
- [00:01:21.910]our plan will require help from all parts of campus
- [00:01:24.560]to ensure that students will make it to Husker Dialogues,
- [00:01:27.790]experience Husker Dialogues, learn from Husker Dialogues,
- [00:01:32.120]post about Husker Dialogues on social media,
- [00:01:34.740]hashtag Husker Dialogues
- [00:01:36.830]and make it back to their residence halls with time left
- [00:01:39.630]for bedtime reading and a quick call to mom.
- [00:01:43.340]We have in the past few years leaned on our friends
- [00:01:45.650]and residential life to help us get our students into place.
- [00:01:49.570]Residential assistance, bring their floors to the Devaney.
- [00:01:52.670]We all sit together in theater style at the Devaney
- [00:01:55.290]to hear the stories of our student speakers.
- [00:01:58.130]Following the speakers we exit to the track
- [00:02:00.830]where we've set up 3000 plus chairs for discussion.
- [00:02:04.550]It is a sea of students to move.
- [00:02:06.410]and to live through an experience.
- [00:02:08.580]But we feel confident about doing this work together.
- [00:02:14.860]We are all educators and researchers,
- [00:02:18.590]so we wanted to determine the effect that this event
- [00:02:21.680]has had for our participants.
- [00:02:24.010]So we survey the student participants each year
- [00:02:27.720]and as you can see from this slide,
- [00:02:30.740]some 2,400 students responded last year.
- [00:02:34.370]The students agreed that hearing the students' stories
- [00:02:38.290]increased their awareness of diversity,
- [00:02:40.640]in the university community.
- [00:02:42.950]Students also agreed that the conversation guides
- [00:02:46.300]promoted respectful discussion, and finally students agreed
- [00:02:51.514]that learning about diversity and inclusion is important
- [00:02:54.680]in their university experience.
- [00:02:57.580]That's our really most important issue,
- [00:03:01.310]is making sure that students are learning about diversity
- [00:03:04.790]during their educational experiences.
- [00:03:09.890]With that, I need to tell you about our committees.
- [00:03:19.360]First, we want to acknowledge Dr. Karen Kassebaum,
- [00:03:22.000]for the work she has and will do,
- [00:03:23.660]to lead on the educational side of our event.
- [00:03:27.340]She is aware of the challenges
- [00:03:28.780]that exist around facilitation.
- [00:03:31.450]We need some 360 plus facilitators, they need to be trained
- [00:03:35.980]and ready for interactions with students.
- [00:03:38.760]In the past we've struggled with both training
- [00:03:40.880]and getting facilitators to show up.
- [00:03:43.420]Karen has the goal of training towards overall education
- [00:03:47.030]that will make faculty, staff
- [00:03:48.420]and student participants ready for work,
- [00:03:51.120]even beyond this event.
- [00:03:53.240]I'm excited to see the leaders we will train.
- [00:03:55.910]I cannot say how important this community is
- [00:03:59.100]and will be for this project.
- [00:04:02.700]As you can see, there are two separate committees
- [00:04:05.080]that you can sign up for either conversation guides
- [00:04:09.290]or conversation trainers.
- [00:04:12.230]With regards to logistics,
- [00:04:13.920]we understand that the challenge is making sure
- [00:04:17.380]that students, faculty
- [00:04:18.920]and staff are in the places where they are supposed to be
- [00:04:22.640]and confident of their work.
- [00:04:25.020]We want to make sure that resources
- [00:04:27.130]and planning come together.
- [00:04:29.490]So if this is your passion, please join this committee.
- [00:04:35.740]Next, we can talk about the student experience.
- [00:04:40.350]I have to share that this committee is special to my heart.
- [00:04:44.390]I say all the time that I wake up in the morning
- [00:04:46.570]thinking about diversity and inclusion
- [00:04:48.690]and go to bed at night thinking about it as well.
- [00:04:52.210]I want every part of the student experience
- [00:04:54.450]to help make our students better people.
- [00:04:57.480]To that end, I've asked Matt Nelson
- [00:04:59.980]from Residence Life to be my co-chair.
- [00:05:02.420]Our goal will be to help our students
- [00:05:04.020]as they enter the university and as they go forward
- [00:05:07.060]to be the most aware people in their careers.
- [00:05:09.910]Please join us as we consider student experiences
- [00:05:12.860]that may be created that will affect students before
- [00:05:16.330]or after the Husker Dialogues event.
- [00:05:19.110]Finally, the committee that may touch students
- [00:05:21.530]before we ever try to even have a conversation with them
- [00:05:25.260]is marketing and communications.
- [00:05:28.200]This committee takes on the task of getting information
- [00:05:30.790]from us and taking it to the entire campus.
- [00:05:34.330]Please join this committee,
- [00:05:35.940]if your talents are in the area of social media,
- [00:05:38.730]graphic arts and communication, we need you.
- [00:05:45.920]Finally, I want to ask you again
- [00:05:50.100]to consider participating in one of our committees.
- [00:05:53.410]You can even nominate your friends to participate as well.
- [00:05:57.590]With that, you can reach us at huskerdialogues@unl.edu,
- [00:06:02.740]or on our webpage at diversity.unl.edu/husker-dialogues.
- [00:06:09.050]The entire staff from the office of diversity and inclusion,
- [00:06:13.830]would like to thank you for participating
- [00:06:17.500]and being willing to participate with
- [00:06:19.340]our activity of Husker Dialogues.
- [00:06:22.330]We look forward to working with you
- [00:06:24.060]and if you have any questions,
