- [00:00:02.800]Ventilators are critical
- [00:00:04.350]for many seriously ill COVID-19 patients,
- [00:00:07.890]but what happens when a hospital runs short
- [00:00:10.860]of this life-saving equipment?
- [00:00:14.840]A collaboration between an engineer and a surgeon
- [00:00:18.120]produced one solution.
- [00:00:20.110]This technique that we've been looking at
- [00:00:24.050]using one ventilator to treat two patients
- [00:00:28.130]would help stretch those resources.
- [00:00:30.400]University of Nebraska, Lincoln
- [00:00:31.950]engineer Ben Terry joined forces with Doctor Keely Buesing,
- [00:00:35.900]from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
- [00:00:38.426]We've been working on other therapies
- [00:00:40.800]to treat respiratory distress
- [00:00:44.359]and so this was a natural fit for us.
- [00:00:46.860]Sharing a ventilator creates a problem
- [00:00:49.350]when patients are mismatched.
- [00:00:51.430]The lungs of a sicker patient take in less oxygen,
- [00:00:54.580]driving the healthier patient
- [00:00:56.230]to take in more than they need.
- [00:00:58.330]The solution involves a system built with equipment
- [00:01:01.270]found at any hardware store.
- [00:01:03.400]Our technique matches,
- [00:01:06.090]deals with that mismatch between patients.
- [00:01:09.380]A less compliant lung on the left
- [00:01:10.860]is receiving the controlled pressure.
- [00:01:12.780]This in turn.
- [00:01:13.970]It's hoped the approach can help
- [00:01:15.820]the medical community in an urgent situation
- [00:01:18.500]where there are no other solutions.
- [00:01:20.980]Now both lungs inflating with the same volume.
- [00:01:24.030]Our goal was to share it with as many folks as possible
- [00:01:28.669]and we invited two respiratory therapists
- [00:01:31.730]from UNMC to come and observe the technique as well
- [00:01:35.520]and so we wanted to help the physicians
- [00:01:39.100]feel as comfortable with this technique as possible.
- [00:01:41.600]Terry said he wanted to help
- [00:01:43.570]and so did his graduate students.
- [00:01:46.410]One hundred percent of the ones I asked said,
- [00:01:48.697]"Yeah let's do this."
- [00:01:49.780]And they knew they'd be donating their time
- [00:01:51.730]and they wanted to get this done as soon as possible
- [00:01:56.670]so they'd have to spend some late hours working on it
- [00:01:59.070]and they all did and it was just, I think,
- [00:02:02.240]really inspiring to see the students step up.
- [00:02:05.470]It's one way to support the medical community
- [00:02:08.190]that is giving so much.
